  1. The 'W' irons. For any of you readers of this thread, here is the basic diagram. Will be using 0.75mm thk plasticard as I normally do. I've built several wagons as you know and I have had good success with them. The important thing to remember, is to make all the measurements from the long flat side, as this is the datum. The datum edge will be glued to the base of the wagon. As long as the base was flat when the ends and sides were put on, everything should work out fine. The angled edges where the triangle cut outs are work out to be about 0.8mm thick. Putting a pilot hole of 1mm approx before cutting out the rest of the irons is advisable. Once you have 4, sandwich all the blanks and open out to 2mm ready for the brass top hat bearing, this should ensure that the holes are in the correct position through the whole set. Thanks for looking Scott
  2. Well, the little kits have been assembled and I have just started to add some basic details. Next its on to making the 'W' irons, got to make a fair few of these, probably about 24 or so, for these and a couple of future projects in mind. Thanks for looking. Scott
  3. Well had a bit of fun tonight. Inner stiffeners cut out, sides are now scribed. Like two mini kits ready for assembly. Thats it for tonight, it will be a couple more evenings before I'll do any more..... Until then
  4. Hi all, Been a while, just getting back in the saddle after an enforced break in modelling. I thought I'd start off with something, what I'd call simple, a couple of salt wagons. The first two are based on the Hornby offering, the next couple I'll be using the drawing in 'Rolling stock worth modelling, Vol 1'. So here goes, first I've cut 4 ends. These have been cut and scribed. The inner roof supports are more or less the same size, except that they are 0.75mm shorter in height, to take into account the thickness of the wagon base. More later....
  5. Have a look at this, not only will it inspire you, but will give you a good idea what can fit into certain spaces. CJ freezer / Peco publications https://www.amazon.co.uk/Railway-Modeller-Plans-Small-Locations/dp/0900586257 This is the book I'd suggest, but its only a few quid, do not pay the £39.99 it displays, i just got that to show you, look on ebay. Cheers Scott
  6. Look at my thread, my/our carriage scratch building thread. Ive built wagons and vans as well, all in 4mm Peter tatlows books have great drawings and nick campling has some great books too, with drawings. P.s. i make my own bogies and "W" irons all with good results. If you do some bits and bobs, post your creations there too. Cheers Scott
  7. She looks a beauty. On my scratch building thread (my/our carriage building thread ) i do my duckets like this.... Dont have a cutting machine, all my stuff is done with a scalpel Cheers Scott
  8. Just starting to add some colour now. Suprising how different the grey looks unded different light, or same light different angle Scott
  9. Heard about this problem......only just recently, got my green class 31, it was from the first batch, boo hoo !!!!! Bought it new, ran fantastically, been in the box as "new " after only being run a few times. Had to dismantle my layout due to a move.....now several years have passed, have managed to get to run my loco on a club layout and it was making an awful grinding noise! On closer inspection and i dismantled the body to find the body has split in the corners and that the chassis has started to disintegrate. Is it too late now ? yours most gutted!!!! Scott.
  10. Where on earth can i find the decals for this trio? I've looked on model masters site and rail tec. Ive seen a set, i think, possibly pc0016?? Or has any one out there got some spares they could donate or swap? Cheers, Scott.
  11. Martyn, Glad you posted, thats why i called it a "my/our" thread. Your build is cracking, maybe you could add a step by step on how you do your body sides and panelling, which look very good. Scott
  12. Oops!!! Making a great restoration there. Scott
  13. Just a quickie...... I've had this old blue Hornby class 37 hanging around. I've been tinkering with it as I've always wanted a split head code early green one. Scott
  14. Well, these wagons are nearing completion now. All 3 have the tiny handles on, 12 on each one. Just a few bits and pieces like the clasps for the hatches and i think where the end supports are I've missed some angle iron work. Been a bit of a slog at times, but i think they'll be worth it. I built not only because i want a few for my layout, but for the challenge as well. What do you think? Cheers Scott
  15. Had a productive few hours last night and this morning. The three of the grain hoppers are all up to this point in the build now. The brakes are on along with the brake levers, the hand wheels and the grain hopper sliding hatches. Post more later Scott
  16. Quite a bit has been done, the wheels are now correct. I've started work on the grain roof sliding hatches, added the Vee hangers and have added the axle boxes and springs. I've treated myself to some etched brass ladders, wheels for the grain trapdoor mechanism and some white metal buffers. My advice to anyone contemplating doing these.....a limited number of up to max of about five would be enough for anyone to build, building a whole rake....well Bachmann are one of a few companies that make them. Thanks for looking Scott
  17. Some progress made over the last couple of days. The wheel Irons are cut out and glued, the 'T' sections dowm the ends and the side inspection hatches. Have started work on the two hatches that are on the top. Will post more as it happens. Thank for looking Scott
  18. That single panel you've done on the middle photo looks really good, the full panels look gret too. What brush do you use, or did i miss that? Scott
  19. Nice models..... Please post some show and tell on how you do your sides in my thread. Or go into more details here......please. Carry on the good work Scott
  20. So far, so good..... All the ends are nearly done, i cant put the 'T' section on the ends until the ends have the strips added from the corner uprights. All the side ribs are finished. This last piccy is a 3/4 view to show how well the ribs are turning out. Shant be boing too much for a couple of evenings, but as soon as any reasonable progress has been made I'll post it here. Thanks for looking Scott
  21. The wagons are taking shape quite nicely. Im using slaters flat strip for all the ribbing, the joggles in the angle iron just above the sole bars are looking neat too (wasn't looking forward to doing them, to tell the truth) but i think they're ok. This last picture shows some of the small bits I'm using for the underside of the long slope. With these i stick a length onto the small triangle, flip it over and stick another length to the other side. Then feed it down so it meets the tight angle on the bottom, then glue the bigger end plate in. Making sure its all equi-spaced and square. When all these bits are completed, tomorrow night hopefully, I'll start on getting the wheels on. Thanks for looking, Scott.
  22. Dont know whether you've seen my coach building thread (coaches, carriages, wagons and more....) but i make my own, bogies and W irons etc.... Have had good results. The only bits I buy are the top hat pin point bearings and the wheel sets. I'm scratching 3 x 20 ton covered grain hoppers at the moment. Keep up the good work. Scott
  23. Super stuff there. Do like your wire bending jig......never seen that before, where did you stumble across that?? Scott
  24. I do like seeing a scratch build. This is looking particularly fine. Keep up the good work. Scott
