  1. If you use a reverser switch which isn't fully electronic (means has a relay) you are in the game with approximately 30 to 35£ per loop.
  2. Thanks Paul, sure we meet again at one or the other show.
  3. Yes, decoders were Zimo MX63 or MX64 (now you see that stuff was a few years ago as those are types from the early 2000s and no longer available...). Total current for all 4 functions was 500mA max, I used rather large (5W) resistors in series to the memory wire, to keep the current at or below 100mA. Didn't kill a single decoder.... The total resistance of the memory wire plus the resistor should be not lower than 180Ohm if you use an 18V system. The fine regulation, which determines how fast the panto moves up, can be done by dimming the function output (dimming with CV60, determination which function output(s) with CV114). The Zimo instructions for small decoders are a real bible for the enthusiast, even I use quite a few things in my models, there are still many things I didn't try. 84 pages worth a read. Other way round. The pantos are up with power on. Yes I left the power on as I normally try to drive with panto up. (until something gets broken.... ). The change in the crystalline system where the effect starts and the wire contracts was for the wire I used approximately at 50 degrees C. Means the wire gets warm or even hot, best to have it in an area where nothing delicate can be touched. Some people used a Teflon tube to keep the wire separate. This has also the advantage that it reacts slower if you switch the power off (Thermal insulation). The question is if there is enough space to do so. Probably in 0 scale rather than in H0.
  4. That is correct. And I am well happy that it works - also after more than 15 years. Had a Piko loco in the club yesterday, works like on the first day. Even it is more fiddly than putting in a small servo, I prefer the smooth movement. The locos I did with servo all show some vibrations during the movement. The memory wire doesn't. A very smooth movement, the speed is determined by the current and how quick it cools down. And please don't forget: If you want to see it with your own eyes (and you are not too far away) - Milton Keynes Model Railway Society Exhibition 16th July 2022
  5. Trees are looking very good. I used seafoam for all my deciduous trees on the layout (more than a 100). Managed to grow and harvest some plants, but they were not taller than 10 to 15cm. Well - they come from the Gobi desert, probably a bit different the climate over there...
  6. @Northroader Small correction. When I said KFNB went to Gmuend I was wrong. It was the Franz Josephs Bahn, which went out along the river Danube until Tulln, where it crossed the river, and from there to Gmuend. The town of Gmuend is still there and in Austria, but the original railway station is on the other side of the border, as you mentioned in Ceske Velenice. The border runs through the town. The time after the second world war was not a nice one, Everybody speaking German or had Austrian or German origin was thrown out of Czecholovakia in a kind of ethnical cleanout. And these were families who lived and worked there for generations, and had nothing to do with the Nazi occupation in the years of the war. Thanks god the other side didn't do the same, as my surname is Novak, which is Czech (and means new man in translation to English). Back to the subject. I found a picture of the Nordbahnhof 1890 which I think is not in the thread yet. Nordbahnhof 2 This station was heavily damaged during the second world war and the ruins have been demolished in 1965 and one of the Nordwestbahnhof around 1880 nordwestbahnhof 2 The Franz Josephs Bahnhof is still there, but a complete newbuild showing a concrete and glass facade, finished in 1978. About the pre-grouping situation: I think Ing. Karl Goelsdorf gave a good description in the book Lokomotivbau in Alt-Oesterreich (page 9 to 14).
  7. Interesting thread. For me especially the part about the Viennese Kaiser Ferdinand Nordbahnhof. When I grew up this railway station was almost dead, as it was a line to nowhere. The line finished at the station of Gmuend on the border to Czechoslovakia, as, after the second world war, the iron curtain came down and any traffic over the border stopped. The whole part of Austria close to the eastern borders suffered economically. The Nordbahn was also one of the last lines in Austria to see electrification, and I remember going on holiday with steam powered trains in the mid/end sixties. Should there be any need for translation of any German text into English please send me note. Vecchio, 40 years in Austria, 11 years in Italy and so far 12 years in the UK.
  8. Is it just because everybody is on holiday or is RMWEB faster since I removed the adds? I enjoy the speed from quite a time ago. Well worth the money....
  9. Great idea to create this group, stops lots of moaning...🙂 I am in, Vecchio
  10. Actually it was a Kleinbahn loco, so I do not think that it is mazak rot. Probably the oil has gummed up. A day in paraffin oil may help.
  11. Was it Kleinbahn or Klein Modellbahn? (the Brother of the guy who manufactured Kleinbahn) Klein Modellbahn had the Mazak rot problem ion almost all of their engines and I lost several otherwise wonderfully detailed models. Kleinbahn itself, with their more play like approach and less details obviously used a better alloy and never had mazak rot problems.
  12. If you ever hear about such an event give me a shout (ok, a PM would do as well)....

    Donnersbachkogel

Donnersbachkogel In a few keywords: Continental (Austria), H0 and H0e, catenary, Z21 DCC, megapoints controller, 2 operators Donnersbachkogel is a freelance Austrian layout, located somewhere in the pre-alpine area. The old station building of Donnersbachkogel is also the terminus of a narrow-gauge line which was in the past used to get minerals from a remote mine to the mainline. Today the mine is only running as a showmine and instead of minerals mainly tourists are transported up the line. At the station is also the connection to a single track electrified main-line. Not many trains stop there today, main traffic is on weekends to bring tourists to this attraction. We are somewhere in the early 90th of the last century. Besides OBB stock also independent rail companies are starting to be visible in the business and some multi system engines are in use as it is not far to the neighbour countries Italy and Switzerland, which have either a completely different power system (Italy) or a different allowed profile (Switzerland) so that multisystem engines are convenient as one engine can cover it all. The name Donnersbachkogel was chosen as it sounds pretty Austrian but it isn't an existing location. Donnersbach comes from a stream which thunders down a gorge and creates a thunder like noise, kogel means hill, which in Austria can also look like a proper mountain. The layout consists of 4 modules, 120cm or 90cm long and with a possibility to loop around at both ends to allow continuous operation. There is a scenic break so that the return path which goes through some sidings is invisible. H0e part is end to end. Track for H0 is Peco finescale code 75, for H0e Peco 009. Train control with Roco Z21 – and wireless controllers (tablet or smartphone). A backup system (Lenz) is available. Decoders in the locomotives are mainly from Zimo. Several locomotives have sound. I tried to add a stay alive capacitor were possible. The electric overhead line is completely homemade (brass poles, catenary wire copper clad mild steel) and is based on the OBB standard concrete poles. As long we do not have any wire breakage, we drive with pantograph up. Several locomotives have remote controlled pantographs (memory wire or servo driven) and several locomotives have electromagnetic uncouplers. There are 3 electromagnetic uncouplers in the H0e part to allow run around the train. We try to avoid the hand of God while running this layout as good as possible. Every DCC chip is properly programmed, I think DCC is only worth it if you program the chips. Just put a chip in and do nothing except the address setting is a waste of money. For point, signal and light control I use megapoints controllers. Points, uncouplers and semaphore signals are servo driven. The control is done by a homemade mimic board using the mega points multipanel hardware. I started working on the modules in January 2016 - and finished in January 2020. 14. Well as it looks it took me a year to get on with this loco shed... Well, after some headscratching I made a mechanism for the doors, they are servo driven, using an old barrier crossing mechanism from Conrad. See here the mechanism IMG20220522164136 and the control board which is at the fiddle yard side. IMG20220522164624 And a short video how the thing works. Sorry for the background noises... VID20220522172224 And why I am busy now? Well - Milton Keynes Model railway club will have a show on the 16th of July, and I will have my layout on display there. Hope to see some of you there!
  15. All the best for your exhibition! I would probably have come over, but unfortunately one of our friends got 70. So drinking and celebration it is and nor model railway show visiting.... By the way, if anybody would like to go a bit further west-south-west we will have Milton Keynes model railway show on the 16th of July. My layout Donnersbachkogel will be there on display. Continental, DCC, overhead lines, H0and H0e, no hand of god. Some DCC gadgets as moving pantographs and remote uncoupling. Have a look, and probably this is something for your next show.... Regards Vecchio
  16. I think he already did. look at traction engine and other over-type locomotives Unfortunately many photos are gone.
  17. Sometimes the real thing is worse than we would do it. A rather run down house in Newport Pagnell. If I would paint a roof like that on my layout people would say it is not real... IMG20220402102813
  18. No fear, also I like the z21 & Z21, if one of them breaks I would replace it (by z21 only) Want to see Z21 in action? Why not coming to the Milton Keynes Model Railway exhibition on Saturday 16th July 2022 where I will be present with Donnersbachkogel. Where? The Ridgeway Centre Featherstone Road Wolverton Mill Milton Keynes MK12 5TH doors are open from 10 to 16:30 And yes, I will wear my Lederhosen to give the whole thing an Austrian touch.... received_202187720900996 by Gerhard Novak, on Flickr
  19. I think it is not you. I also struggle with the search function and in the end I went through the whole lot until I found the locomotive I have bought. Not really user friendly (or I am too stupid to understand how it should work). By the time looking for the right loco in the database I would have programmed half of the functions manually already....
  20. Just a quick reminder for you Open day MKMRS: Saturday, 9th April 2022 from 10am to 3pm 1 North House Bond Avenue Bletchley Buckinghamshire MK1 1SW

We have 5 layouts in the clubroom, Barnes junction, which is a test track for several scales IMG20220301203037 Barton Crossing, our 00 layout, running both DC and DCC IMG20220301202106 IMG20220301202451 Brinklow, N scale, DC or DCC IMG20220301202152 Foster Road, 00, DCC dan Frimingham, 0 scale, DCC IMG20220301192235 IMG20220301192101 There will be also a sales stall Hope to see many of you!
  24. I think Jaegerndorfer will get some money this year. Not that I need them, but I collect old Austrian locos... Had some very nice Klein Modellbahn Oldtimers, but all died the Mazak-rot death.
