  1. On a slightly different note, can any 800 owners confirm whether or not the underside of the coaches can be removed in the same way as for the driving cars? If so I'm hoping I use that space to fit some old decoders so I can control the interior lighting throughout the train. In one of the youtube reviews there is a brief shot of the underside of a coach and there seem to be two marks of some kind, they look like they could be screw holes but it's not clear.

    Thanks,

    Tom

Just had a look. The marks are not screw holes. The “undertray” is part of the coach chassis moulding and not a separate removable item.

  2. I notice that the white component appears to be a separate moulding. Is it? If so, is it attached to the chassis or the body? Either way, the accuracy of attachment could be affecting whether it causes a problem or not. Sorry, I could examine this on my own model but it has to go in front of the camera next week so I don't wish to take it apart until afterwards. (CJL)

Just had a close look and it’s definitely part of the overall coach body moulding, not a separate component.

  3. I was thinking of a station building on one side of a road bridged above the railway, and maybe a row of shops on the opposite side, although technically it would be termed a tunnel.

A good example of a station building built on a bridge above the railway is Denmark Hill in south London.

    https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=denmark+hill+station&prmd=mniv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjo68vz-r3ZAhVJPsAKHRnVC-cQ_AUIEygD&biw=1024&bih=666#imgrc=ovoR-E-iBV34_M:

To carry the weight of the building you will need deep steel plate girders and several of them as they will need to be placed directly beneath the perimeter walls of the building as they span over the railway. The girders will need to sit on substantial piers at their ends.

I agree with the post above about buildings over railways with a scale foot depth (or less) of support structure that spans tens of scale yards with no visible support. To me that destroys the illusion of the model and it reverts to being toy-like.

  4. A further observation.

On the other side of the bogie as it pivots around sharp curves, the bogie "suspension bag" rides up against the body lifting lug thus:-

    post-29162-0-74436800-1519453392.jpeg

This has the effect of tilting the body upwards on this side and hence downwards on the far side, which effectively guarantees that the bogie will catch on the inside edge of the damper bracket on the far side.

  5. The modification to Darius 33's cars (I think the 'white thingy' is a yaw-damper bracket) with material pared off the inside is curious and I'm not sure quite what it is intended to achieve. Does it eliminate derailment? I've checked mine, and none of my cars have this modification. It would not be unheard of to find such 'tweaks' done during factory inspections. I seem to recall some Class 67s with evidence of filler in the body mouldings - not sure now whether they were Lima or Hornby. (CJL)

I think the pared-off yaw damper bracket is intended to create a “ramp” that prevents the bogie from catching on the inside edge and causes it to lift up back onto the flat surface of the yaw damper bracket (white thingy) when the bogie pivots back to straight.

I have a second IET and none of the brackets have this carving applied to the coaches in that set.

  6. I have just checked one of the other coaches and discovered something very interesting...

This is the second coach I checked - the white thingy on the coach body has had a chamfer "carved" along its inside edge.

    post-29162-0-07813900-1519405783.jpeg

All four white thingys on this coach have this chamfer carved along their inside edges.  I have not carved this chamfer so it must have been done in the factory or somewhere else before it got to me...

The first coach that I checked does not have this chamfer on any of the white thingys.

    post-29162-0-19599400-1519405916.jpeg

The third coach of the set that I have does have this chamfer on all of the white thingys.

It looks like this bogie catching derailment problem may have become apparent to someone in the supply chain before I received my model and this carved chamfer is an, as yet unknown, somebody's attempt at a solution...

  7. Just received my Class 800 IEP and immediately checked the coach bogie operation.

I have a theory as to what the issue may be, which goes as follows:-

    (1)   The coach body rests on the bogie through contact between the white plastic thingy (possibly the body lifting point) on the body and the bracket thingy (possibly the damper) on the bogie as illustrated below.

    post-29162-0-42367900-1519404262.jpeg

    post-29162-0-93766700-1519404279.jpeg

    (2)   On straight track or with shallow curves (I tried mine on R3 and it was fine being pushed by hand) the white plastic surface and the bogie surface still "mate" (overlap in contact) and so all is fine.

    post-29162-0-92305700-1519404380.jpeg

    (3)   With sharper curves the bogie pivots so that the mating surfaces do not overlap and, when pivoting back to straight, the bogie surface may catch on the inside edge of the white coach body surface - especially if the track is a mite out of level - such as is an inevitable occurrence in the real world.

    post-29162-0-18556400-1519404630.jpeg

A possible solution might be to fix a plasticard packer (single or multiple layers) to the coach chassis undersurface to bring it level with the white coach body surface so that the bogie suface is always resting on the same "level" of surface and cannot catch on the inside edge of the white surface when the coach goes around sharper curves than R3 - as illustrated below:-

    post-29162-0-85254900-1519405497.jpeg

Note - I have just placed the packer for this photo - it is not glued in place.

  8. There’s some other interesting bits on your site as well. But where do you ship from? I ask because your location says Dubai and anything coming from outside the EU to Portugal that is not flat and so a card or letter gets stopped by customs and you end up with a lot of hassle with documents and paying through the nose to get the stuff.

The items are made on 3D printers operated by Shapeways - somewhere in Europe I think. Shapeways “host and print” people’s designs. The item won’t actually be shipped by the designer from wherever they are.

  9. I did put a post on the Bachmann 66779 thread as to what the size of the bell is. Didn't get any response. There are various ships bell's made by Billings Boats and Robbe. Here is what I consider to be the best shape of bell. However it gives the diameter as 14mm. As I model in N, I have no OO at home to try and make a comparison.

One for sale here, actually they come as a pair

Scratch building brackets wouldn't be too diificult.

Alas 14mm - just over half an inch - diameter might be a tad large for OO

Interesting website though so thanks for posting the link.

This may be the right size though:-

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bell-Dummy-Long-Brass-Gauge-N-1-160-LF2-A-/382327311236

Price is a bit steep though - and you would need to cut off the mounting shaft.

  10. I imported the layout roster of locos from the old app to the new one - had to do this by the email method as the WiFi transfer only works between new app machines, not from old app to new app. Trouble is the order of the locos was jumbled up in the new app. Takes ages to re-order it.

I will probably get used to the new app in time. Wonder if it locks up like the old app did when the iPad or iPhone shuts down on powersave...

  11. AND for you or I Nearly $200 postage on top of that!!!!!

    Khris

If you read what the seller says in the postage section he has stated a "dummy" overseas £100 postage value to satisfy eBay's requirement but will confirm the actual postage cost if you enquire.  The UK postage is £3.20 not $200.

Bidding started at 99p so the high bidders must be getting carried away as usual
