  1. Hello,

I recently acquired a Hornby Javelin and on fitting a decoder the motor runs very fast straight from the off - even with a fraction of the lowest throttle setting.

    Different decoders make no improvement.

    I am using a Roco Z21 controller.

Any help or guidance most appreciated.

    Cheers

  2. Please sort the trusses out first - they're about a foot too low

There is something that does not look right about the trusses. Looking at the photo of the real EWS Turbot, the vertical legs attach to the bottom end of the diagonal member rather than to the lower horizontal member. The model has them connected to the horizontal member. Coupled with the truss looking too deep, as Southernman46 has observed, this gives the diagonal members too steep an angle. All of this, to me makes it "look wrong".

Perhaps a spot of weathering will improve things.

  3. Erm, apart from the fact the 4SUB's are NOT MK1 designs (they're Bullied...) the BIG gap is a little more CIGnificant for areas outside London.

Given that the Kernow-commissioned Class 205 begat the forthcoming 2-HAP from Bachmann and that the 205 is now in the main Bachmann catalogue, there is a fair chance that the imminent Kernow 4-TC will beget a 4-CIG from Bachmann some time in the future.

Of course given Bachmann's current production lags this could be the dim and distant future...

    Cheers

  4. I remember reading a highly entertaining article about a trip to the UK by the owner of Rapido Trains and thinking what a totally great guy he is and wasn't it nice that he had decided to provide us with models of UK trains that are as excellent as those that Rapido makes of Canadian and US trains.

After ploughing through the pedantry on this thread I wouldn't blame him for giving up on us altogether.

  5. Ah yes, thanks Darius.  I never realised about those stripes, so well done for modelling them! Great attention to detail.

    Great stuff.

I printed the stripes as solid light green patches using a laser printer and white decal paper.  The "Rapid City Link  Gatwick-London" lettering was created using MS Paint in large size and then shrunk down for printing on separate light green "patches".  Solid strips were cut for the main stripes and applied over the full length of each coach side.  The letter strips were cut as small lengths and applied over the long decal strip in the appropriate locations.  The lettering (including BE arrow and airplane symbols) is there but is hard to read with the naked eye.   Most of them are hopefully applied the right way up...

  6. That's something unusual. Nice work !

I really like those - fair play to you.

I remember travelling on them regularly in the late 1970's - when I was dating a girl from Bognor Regis! Those units, despite their branding, got all over the South Central Division.

Just a small query - I don't remember the yellow stripe on all the carriages in the unit. I think it was just on first class as per normal.

Thanks guys - there was a dayglo light green stripe with the "Rapid City Link" branding at regular intervals on all of the coaches except for the 1st Class section where the stripe was dayglo yellow.

  7. Mine arrived today from Rails of Sheffield. Not much room for a decoder but a Gaugmaster 6-pin/Bachmann harness combo fits just about.

My example is of the single flywheel between the motor and gearbox variety with the motor the wrong way around compared to the instructions. I added "1" to CV29 to correct the direction of travel.

Runs reasonably slowly if a little hesitantly at slow speed. Currently running in on the rolling road.

  8. Darius, I look. forward your next episode....any give aways as to what livery you might use ?.... and is this a kit you have had sometime ? or the one recently on e-bay ? I have an MTK one 80pc complete and used Hornby mk2 bogies made life so much easier than the white metal offering.

I remember seeing these units around Euston on day trips to London from Stoke in the 1970s so all over rail blue with yellow ends is going to be the livery for the Class 310.

  9. Hi Everyone,

After many weeks of delays woith the 3d designers, all the highly detailed bodysides  for the class 507,508,313,314,315 emu are now for sale on Ebay, The driving coach roof for all versions, and centre trailer coach roof as used on the class 507,508,315,455  are also listed.

The pantograph coach roof for the class 313,314,315 and the modified coach rear end (panto side) is in the final stages of 3d design and should only be a few weeks away.

I have had the coach roofs done as one piece and each coach bodyside uses 3 modular pieces.

I currently have each coach bodyside listed but the modular pieces will be available individually.

Or, as previously suggested, start your own thread instead of hijacking this one.

  10. Serious head on, is the Mk2 suburban unit a Southern Pride 310/312 kit? A friend of mine did quite a good job in making a 312 from the kit. Seeing his under construction I think it might be a tad easier than a MTK kit.

It's the Southern Pride kit and will be built as a Class 310 - wrap around windscreens and all - in the BR Blue livery that I remember from the 1970s

  11. Darius great work again, and very instructive a good few takeaways for my MTK projects, I look forward to your next offering!, and the emu offerings that have come out as a result of your thread.

Thanks 47164. Here's a sneak preview of my next project.

  12. I sympathise with the cutting up of transfers, it's difficult to line them up and then just when you think you have moved a digit over to the right place, the one next to it moves!

Numbers are better than no numbers. 3 of my EMU creations are awaiting numbers having been made a few years ago.

As I said earlier I think it looks great.

    Thanks Jon,

I have done the separate cut up numbers thing with model aircraft. With small sized decals it is almost impossible to line and space them properly. Plus the cut lines form ridges and are very visible.

  13. It would be great to see a video of your unit on youtube at some point when finished and running.

Have you had the unit formed into the full 4 cars yet or is the 4th coach still in the finishing process.

I am absolutely amazed at how fast the unit has been built but I am impressed with your work. Well done.

Thanks Mersey507003. The chassis of the fourth coach has been completed but I have yet to motivate myself to start on the body. Once I do get started - probably this weekend - it should not take too long.

    Cheers

  14. Apologies for mentioning this as I think the work you have done has been fantastic but was there a reason for numbering the motor coach as S21269, S25720 and S24727?

A possible answer is that they were the original coach numbers that were applied when the units were built in their 4 car formations.

I would hazard a guess that when the class 455/7 units were built that it is again possible that the coaches would have been renumbered upon transfer of the 508s minus 1 trailer coach up here to the wirral where I live.

The motor coaches were then numbered into the 646xx and 647xx series and the trailer cars numbered into the 714xx & 715xx series.

Confession time. The are random "S" numbers from a decal sheet that I have and definitely not the correct numbers.

I have some old ABC guides from the late '70s that probably have the correct numbers referenced but I honestly could not be asked to chop up and line up individual numbers to suit.

I know this is probably RMWeb heresy but there it is.

The model will (eventually) be run on the layout that a friend and I are planning and is not intended for competition - apart from the judgement of my peers here on RMWeb.

    Cheers

  15. Loving the open hopper ventilators - a very nicely observed touch, and you've got the angle just right. I remember the originals on the SWD and this is one classy bit of modelling - can't wait to see the finished unit.

    David

    Hi David,

Thanks for this. I though adding the open hopper vent windows would be a nice touch.

I used plasticard offcuts cut to a triangular shape, superglued to the glazing strip and then painted silver.

Getting the angle right is pure luck as it was determined by the width of the plasticard offcut :)

    Cheers
