  1. Rapido’s Leyland National Mk 1s unveiled · Wide geographical spread · NBC and De-regulation eras · Four different body versions Rapido Trains UK is delighted to reveal its first tranche of 1:76 scale Leyland National models. The initial run focuses on the Mk 1 and includes a range of liveries from different parts of the country, including three London Transport liveries that have been officially licensed from Transport for London. Rapido has been able to design 1051/1R (short, single door), 1051/2R (short, dual door), 1151/1R (long, single door) and 1151/2R (long, dual door) body styles. It has also been able to tool Phase 1 and Phase 2 exterior detail differences as well as long and short ventilation pods. Sales & Marketing Manager Richard Foster said, “We’re extremely pleased with the first draft of the CAD design. There are a few areas that need attention but it already promises to be the definitive 1:76 scale National that we hoped it would be. “The most difficult job has been selecting which liveries to include. There are just so many to choose from but we’ve tried to include as wide a geographical selection in the first run whilst keeping the number we produce as manageable as possible.” Design work on the Mk 1 is in the final stages. Rapido hopes that the order book will open either late 2022 or early 2023. 2. LNER Dynamometer Car in ‘N’! · ‘OO’ model scaled down to ‘N’ · Highly detailed · FOUR to choose from Rapido Trains UK is delighted to unveil its first ‘N’ gauge carriage and what better subject is there than the LNER Dynamometer Car? The ‘OO’ gauge version of this model was lauded for its highly detailed interior and underframe. Rapido UK has done its best to include as much of this detail on the ‘N’ gauge version, albeit with the compromises that come with working in a smaller scale. The new ‘N’ gauge Dynamometer Car features a detailed interior while, externally, it features many fine separately fitted parts. Look underneath and you’ll see that all the details and parts associated with the ‘recording wheel’ have been included. Sprung mounted NEM coupler pockets help the model negotiate 263.5mm radius curves. To re-cap its history, No. 23591 was originally built by the North Eastern Railway in 1906. Rapido’s model depicts it in its post-1928 condition, which makes it suitable for re-creating the LNER’s high speed trials of the 1930s which culminated in Mallard’s record run in July 1938. As with the ‘OO’ model, the Dynamometer Car will be offered in post-1946 livery (perfect for re-creating the 1948 Locomotive Exchanges) and in post-1949 condition (when it was used on trials with Bulleid’s infamous ‘Leader’). Rapido is also offering a spoof version in Railway Technical Centre livery. This will be the perfect accompaniment to Rapido’s RTC-liveried Class 28. A fifth version in BR lined maroon as E902502 is available exclusively from Rails of Sheffield. Tooling work is expected to start soon with an anticipated delivery late 2023/early 2024. The order book is now open and the ‘N’ gauge Dynamometer Car can be order through Rapido UK stockists or direct from www.rapidotrains.co.uk Model Factfile: ‘N’ gauge LNER Dynamometer Car What liveries are we making? 955001: No. 23591, LNER livery (1928-1938 condition) 955002: No. 902502, LNER livery (post-1946 condition) 955003: No. E902502, BR livery (post-1949 condition) 955004: DB905202, RTC red/blue (spoof livery) 955005: No. E902502, BR lined maroon (spoof livery) EXCLUSIVE TO RAILS OF SHEFFIELD Price? £99.95 What stage is it at? 3. Rapido UK announces all-new ‘N’ gauge ‘OAA’ wagon · First modern ‘N’ gauge wagon from Rapido · Highly detailed, including the underframe · SIX triple-packs to choose from Rapido Trains UK is to produce an ‘N’ gauge version of the 45t Open AB open wagon, better known as ‘OAA’. This was BR’s first fully air-braked wagon. Ashford Works built the 100 new OAAs (Nos. 100000-100099) in 1971. These wagons were long for a four-wheel open, with a 20ft 9in wheelbase. They were BR’s first fully air-braked wagon and had upgraded running gear to cope with higher operating speeds. Sales & Marketing Manager Richard Foster said, “We’re delighted with how well our ‘OO’ model has scaled down to ‘N’. The CAD files show that the ‘N’ gauge model captures the distinctive look of the real thing, with its mix of steel ends and wooden doors. Despite being much smaller, we’ve been able to include a fully detailed underframe too.” The ’OAA’ will be available in triple packs and there are six different packs to choose from, with a seventh pack available exclusively from Rainbow Railways. The order book is now open and tooling work should start early in 2023 with delivery due either later in the year or early 2024. 4. Rapido UK announces all-new LMS Diagram 1666 open wagon · Widely used prototype · Multiple detail versions produced · UK designed It’s well known that the newly formed London, Midland & Scottish Railway perpetuated many Midland Railway locomotive designs. However, it’s less well known that the LMS also did the same with some of its wagons too. The LMS selected the MR’s final open wagon design, a five-plank four-wheel open, as its new standard and between 1923 and 1930 built a staggering 54,450 of them. There were more of what the LMS would call Diagram 1666 than the Southern Railway’s entire wagon fleet. Despite this, only a handful survive. Sales & Marketing Manager Richard Foster said, “We’re delighted to add the Dia. 1666 to our growing range of steam-era wagons. It’s our intention for there to be complementary wagons for our locomotives – and vice versa – and the Dia. 1666 gives something for our forthcoming ‘Jones Goods’ to pull.” The Dia. 1666 is another UK designed Rapido product. It will feature three different types of wheel (disc, spoked, and split-spoked) but only the independent brake version is being tooled (some batches received Morton brakes). The wagons are available to order now, either from Rapido Trains UK stockists or from www.rapidotrains.co.uk Model Factfile: ‘OO’ gauge LMS Dia. 1666 wagon What liveries are we making? · 937001: No. 24361, LMS grey · 937002: No. 247185, LMS grey · 937003: No. 134946, LMS grey · 937004: No. 356761, LMS grey · 937005: No. 268515, LMS grey · 937006: No. 304008, LMS grey · 937007: No. 217624, LMS bauxite · 937008: No. 139905, LMS bauxite · 937009: No. 304417, LMS bauxite · 937010: No. M156572, BR grey · 937011: No. M234421, BR grey · 937012: No. M133488, BR grey · 937013: No. M101524, BR grey · 937014: No. DM29719, BR grey · 937015: No. 84, Internal User livery · Price? £32.95 What stage is it at? 5. Rapido UK announces new ‘OO’ gauge ‘B-Set’ coaches • All-new Diagram E140 coaches • Available in twin-packs • UK designed The Great Western Railway operated a number of classic branch line trains but one of the most recognisable was the ‘B-Set’, a pair of non-corridor Brake Composites coupled together. Rapido Trains UK is delighted to bring a 21st Century rendition of the ‘B-Set’ to modellers. It is to produce the Diagram E140, which was introduced in 1930. These vehicles sported a guard’s compartment, a single First Class compartment and five Third Class compartments. The coaches were close coupled in a fixed formation with the brake compartments on the outer ends. The Dia. 140s were longer and wider than previous designs and necessitated recessed door handles and guard’s doors. They ran on 7ft wheelbase bogies. A total of 41 sets of Dia. E140 coaches were built. Primarily allocated to the Bristol Division, Dia. 140s could be found further afield, from Cardiff and Taunton to Birmingham and Worcester… not to mention those classic Devon and Cornish branch lines so beloved by modellers! As many of these coaches ran on specific routes, they often received set markings for the location on the ends adjacent to the brake compartments. Rapido’s all-new Dia. E140 has been designed in the UK, from original works drawings. The models feature the usual level of Rapido detail inside and out including etched luggage racks, correct details in First and Third and Guard’s compartments and complete underframe detail. It is expected that the order book will open by the end of the year and that tooling will start early 2023. Model Factfile: ‘OO’ gauge GWR Dia. 6. Rapido UK announces all-new ‘OO’ gauge GWR ‘Small Prairie’ · All-new ‘45XX’ 2-6-2T · All-new ‘4575’ 2-6-2T · First time: RTR ‘44XX’ 2-6-2T Rapido Trains UK’s new ‘B-Set’ coaches really needed a locomotive to go with them… and so Rapido is pleased to announce an all new range of GWR ‘Small Prairies’! The ‘Small Prairie’ story started in 1904 when prototype No. 115 was built. It was designed for branch line working and was so successful that ten more were built in 1905/1906. They became the ‘44XX’ class. Good though the ‘44XXs’ were, they were hampered by their 4ft 1 1/2in diameter driving wheels. Larger 4ft 7 1/2in diameter driving wheels were fitted from 1906 and this became the famous ‘45XX’ class. Churchward’s successor, Charles Collett, made some tweaks to the design, the most noticeable being the larger tanks fitted to the final 100, built in 1927-1929. These became the ‘4575’ class. The ‘Small Prairie’ family was a huge success story. They worked all over the GWR network and lasted until almost the end of Western Region steam, the last being withdrawn in December 1964. Sales & Marketing Manager Richard Foster said, “We’re delighted to add the ‘Small Prairie’ family to our range. Having decided to produce the ‘B-Set’, we needed a locomotive to pull them. And what better choice is there than the ‘Small Prairie’? “We plan to not only bring you ‘45XXs’ and ‘4575s’ to the highest standards demanded but also offer a ‘44XX’ too, which has never been produced ready-to-run before.” Design work is already under way and Rapido aims to include key changes made to the ‘Small Prairies’ throughout their lives as well as myriad smaller detail differences. They will have a Next18 decoder socket, factory-fitted sound speaker and firebox flicker. As design work is still on-going, liveries and prices have yet to be confirmed. Rapido UK would like to thank Mark Sealey from Peak Rail, the Waterman Heritage Trust and Kenny Felstead for their help in developing this exciting range of models.
