Given that Felixstowe is a dominant container port, I assume putting up wires to there has been looked at.

presumably trains towards London could then use the wires so is the problem most stuff goes to ely and peterborough

and the midlands over dominantly non wired routes?

Similarly there was a plan (electric spine?) to add overhead wires to Southampton which was abandoned - not sure if for technical or cost reasons.

Given the strategic review due soon - any hope??

Would there be an issue with loading/unloading metal containers with 25kv a few feet above? Especially as at peesent they are loaded from above?

I'm going to offer a third option, learned a new word recently.

     Gouging.

Seems to be where someone tries to resell something on ebay at an excessive price.  A bit like the £39.99 Aldi Kayaks this summer I saw at between £80 and £200 on eBay and Facebook.

Defined by eBay as "Increasing the price of items to a level that is much higher than is considered fair or reasonable"

Best of all eBay has a policy on Gouging, it is not allowed and people can report it.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/reporting-price-gouging-ebay?id=5105

They are taking offers, you could always have fun with that option.

I've reported countless items over the years. Not sure any have ever been taken down.

The last time I looked at the Terms and Conditions under which Olivia's Trains sell by post, it seemed to me that they put the onus on the seller to take the blame for any postal problems. (Yes, I realise that in law the seller is responsible for the safe delivery of goods). I took the view that if a trader sets out to be controvertial, I'll keep looking elsewhere.

Eventually I found what I wanted in mint condition at half Olivia's price, with (I can't believe this) that mainstay of the Ebay thread, Gostude!

Hopefully you get a good outcome in your situation.

I also recently bought something from Gostude, and was a little disappointed it all went smoothly!

Not heard anything yet after 2 days. I would argue there was not a postal problem - the packet was delivered. It was a packing problem, it wasn't closed.

  4. Made my first order with Olivia's Trains earlier this week.

It arrived today. Sort of. Can you spot the issue?

I have emailed them asking for replacement parts, will let you know how I get on. They don't seem to have the best reputation but I am open minded for now.

Well, after two years of waiting it seems the late crest sound version has been cancelled - just received an email from Hattons to that effect.  What a company. Or should I say ex-company.

That may be Hornby implementing their stupid tier system on Oxford stuff now they own them - i.e. not cancelled, just stitching up retailers like Hattons and their customers.

  6. So freightliner should continue to use Electrics, but put the price up to cover the increased costs? How many lorries would that equate to when customers move away? Assuming they have drivers of course ;)

A coal powered UK power station is running again because of the increase in gas costs. Sadly we've closed most of them and the pits hence we have to rely on imported gas - you can see the problem with that now...

  7. For me there are a couple of reasons to use a DJH or other RTR (Ready To Install?) motor and box combination is:

    1) The kit manufacturer recommends it - because the kit is either designed to fit, or it has been tested and confirmed to be a good choice.

    2) If you are paying someone whatever the going rate is for building a kit for you, it may well work out cost effective to use instead of paying for a box to be built, tested and installed.

However, the cost and flexibility of the HL range is great for my needs. I did try using a Markits box for a 7mm loco but just could not get it to run quietly (no doubt user error).

But sometimes the most basic obvious thing is the most suitable for the check, to me the only other check would have been to unscrew it which adds all manner of new risks.

Perhaps some sonic testing of screws would have identified the fault, it's interesting that an issue was spotted because it was noted there had been shuffling of the baseplates and rectification was planned just not soon enough.  Also it seems perhaps having the same people performing the visual checks led to complacency as it was an unfamiliar checker who spotted the shuffling.

I can understand it being an accepted (if not correct) manner of checking on a track walk - but I read the first mention of a kick being by the investigators.

Would a tap with a hammer give any clues, similar to the old check for broken tyres? Probably wouldn't ring out even if good but it might be possible to tell. Those screws are pretty strong - do they break often?

  9. Very scientific :D

62 The failures of the multiple track screws were not immediately obvious when
RAIB attended the derailment. The upper part of each broken screw was held in
its associated baseplate by a plastic ferrule that had been compressed around
it during installation. These ferrules held the broken screw heads tightly in the
baseplates, so that they could not be turned by hand, and felt solid when given a
kick. The failed state would similarly have been hidden from visual inspection, and
from any test kicks from a patroller’s boots, making detection by a BVI difficult.

Not sure of sumup or Izettle, but If you are only using a square terminal and their app to process payments, and do NOTHING else with cards (no storing, collecting online/by email/by phone etc etc) then there is no Payment card industry requirements - https://squareup.com/gb/en/townsquare/pci-compliance .

(and yes I am well aware of the deep joy a PCI DSS compliance SAQ and scans bring…..).

Interesting - we ended up ditching taking card payments because of the complexity of passing the PCI questionnaires - it insisted on any computers that card details were entered into were on a separate network to anything else and so on. I say ditching, we moved it all to the website and used a plugin the card provider supplies and says covers us. Curious that cheap little boxes are exempt...
