  3. I would expect the chains to be fastened to the chain loops on the bolsters, not to the solebars, the chains need to be at the support point to avoid trying to bend the load. Most loads would want some form of protection. I disposed of most of my wagon books but I expect someone will be along with references. Keith

  6. Rather surprised no-one has yet mentioned India. The inspiration behind this is pretty clear, just they left the 'L' off the lettering. The other NWR locos in the Delhi museum have the livery but perhaps got their inspiration elsewhere, Gorton might recognise this one. While this has a sort of affinity with the WD. Regards Keith

  8. The drawing for the Garratt shows the pivots in the wrong place, they are always within the wheelbase of the engine units. For both the Garratt and Meyer the weight is carried through the pivots, for the Mallet the pivot is just that and weight is transferred to the front engine unit through a sliding bearing under the front of the boiler. Keith
  9. Here you need to distinguish between "catch points" which have been removed, and "trap points" which remain mandatory in scecific circumstances. It is trap points which the UK contingent have been suggesting above for the most part. Catch points in Uk parlance were required on the running lines on uphill grades to catch and derail any vehicles that broke away from the back of a freight heading up the hill, these were required when the freight trains were not fitted with continuous brakes. Since operation of unfitted freights has ceased the catch points are redundant. Trap points are required to protect any passenger running line from freight lines and sidings to divert or derail any unauthorised movement before it encroaches on the passenger line. Assuming the MMA line concerned does not run any passenger trains then these would not be requirements as such. Anyone wanting to operate a similar line in the UK would have to write a safety case and convince the ORR (Office of rail regulation) that the result would be ALARP. It would be pretty difficult given that there is effectively no UK precedent for this style of operation. Would they have foreseen this particular risk a few weeks ago, who knows but they would now! and effective mitigation would be required. Keith

  14. Thanks for posting that, am I seeing drive shafts that suggest the motor in the front tank drives both sets of drivers? That will make it rather tricky to have only one end slip, a Garrett characteristic I have witnessed many times, but still better than only powering one end. Regards Keith

  18. Well, his definition of "fine condition" looks to differ from mine, and I assume yours, but its all clear in the pics, he isn't hiding anything! Very optimistic starting price if he really wants to sell it. Keith

  20. At least 60 years old and described as new! I remember gazing at them enviously in a local shop window when they were indeed new (and outside our price range). A few years later we had a couple of second hand ones, along with a GF Black 5 at the school Model railway Club. Unfortunately the plastic bodyshell only had about a 5 year life before starting to distort but we did get the Black 5 to run by fitting it with a Triang motor. Keith

  25. IMHO Very rare, if ever, with gates but is or, certainly used to be, common with barriers when there are 4 provided. Keith
