  3. An overhead gantry bash rather than a bridge bash, this is from 2012 when a drilling rig on a low loader got tangled up with the overhead sign gantry at the entrance to Mountsorrel Quarry. Made quite a mess.
  4. I head that lonesome whistle blow - Hank Williams
  5. Streets of London - Ralph McTell
  6. One from the archives: https://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/documents/BoT_FrostLane1926.pdf when 20mph was considered fast! Car equipment has certainly improved, though. Imagine having to hand crank the winscreen wiper every 50 yards. Must say I think the inspecting officer was a bit harsh in claiming that it was broad daylight, 45minutes to sunset on an overcast drizzly late November day is unlikely to be broad daylight! To have been on Frost Lane when traveling from Totton to Calshot, the Flying Officer must indeed have been lost.

  8. Several RN ships also had rails on their decks, for mine laying purposes.

  12. Something similar happened to a friend of mine a good few years ago. She stopped at one of our numerous narrow bridges to let oncoming traffic over the bridge, only for a twerp to overtake her and run straight into the oncoming vehicle! Twerp got out and blamed my friend, saying she should not have stopped as then the oncoming driver would have given way. Twerp got quite an ear bashing.
  13. I've been everywhere, man - Johnny Cash
  14. Early morning sunshine tempted me out with the camera, so a few piccies from this morning (17th Feb). The 8:05 to Oxford sat in Charlbury station, already 7 mins late: Waiting for the 8:05 from Oxford to clear the single line section, which it eventually did at about 8:13, finally arriving some 10min late: After which the 8:05 finally set off, 12mins late: The 8:05 is the all stations stopper, the only one of the day to call at the halts of Shipton, Ascott, Combe and Finstock, which is why it is only 2 carriages.
  15. It makes a fellow proud to be a soldier - Tom Lehrer
  16. In Fraser, Geen and Scott's The GWR in the 1930s, vol 1 there is a picture (18) which includes a C3 and in vol 2 there is a picture (214) which also includes a C3. Both pictures apparently post date 1933. According to Harris, C3's were built 1891/2 and some were built as BG/NG convertibles, so must have been over 40 years old when photographed. Whether the particular coaches photographed were converted from BG or were NG from the start, I don't know, but to go back to the question posed by BorderCollie at the start, regarding whether GWR broad gauge convertible carriages could have been seen in 1929, the answer is coaches of the same type certainly could, but not on crack services. PS Identification of the coaches is what is stated in the books, it is well beyond my expertise.
  17. You can also consider the two 1911 SECR coaches 4145 and 4149 that were transferred by BR (Southern Region) to the Isle of Wight in 1949 and are still in action on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
  18. The youth of the heart - Flanders and Swann
  19. Looking at the warwickshire railways site here: https://www.warwickshirerailways.com/gwr/gwrbsh1368.htm is an example of a 1902 coach that lasted in revenue earning service until 1950, so 48 years for this GWR coach. There are several other similar examples given on that site, photographed at Birmingham Snow Hill.
  20. I have confessed to this before - my worst crime is running an Eastern Region Class 101 DMU on my GWR layout set in 1946/7. How do I get away with it? The stairs up to my railway room are defended by a yard long cat who will blind any Rivet Police who are daft enough to call (if they are lucky -if not she will have them for breakfast) so they will not be able to see anything to offend them.
  21. Fortunately without fatal consequences, but a bit of a mess. https://eu.courier-journal.com/story/news/local/2020/02/13/csx-train-derails-kentucky-after-rockslide/4747750002/
