  1. I think that was an original aim when the franchises were re - let, but for some reason it never went ahead. To a degree, it would make sense; at the moment, the Manchester - Huddersfield stoppers are run by TPE for instance, which to me has always seemed ludicrous.
  2. The wife and I had a ride on one just before Christmas, Stalybridge - York and return. Whether it's the state of the track or the vehicles themselves, they do seem to yaw and bounce a lot; coming back, we were sat over a bogie in one of the coaches, and it seemed to be bottoming out on its suspension a fair bit, judging by the bangs from below. This on a train no more than about 4 - 5 years old.
  3. Wasn't 2614 still one of the "Royal" Clauds, based at either Cambrige or King's Lynn? It would explain the cleanliness as well.
  4. Sir Alex Ferguson said much the same thing. Points on the board are guaranteed, but games in hand can be lost. He also said that winning prizes doesn't depend on how you do against the top teams, but equally how well you do against those at the bottom.
  5. It's entirely possible only 5 years after nationalisation, I suppose; how often were coaches overhauled and repainted? It looks like a complete train as well.
  6. There was a"Gentlemen's agreement" instituted between the "East Coast" and "West Coast" companies after the Races to the North in 1895, that trains to Edinburgh or Glasgow should take as least 8 hours; this was still in force in the late 1920s, and the only way they could compete was by the amenities provided in the trains; hence the LNER introduced a barber's shop on the Flying Scotsman. They also tried beauty salons, radio reception and other stunts. Of course, from the mid - 1930s, these trains were speeded up, and there was less need for the gimmicks This agreement also had a lot to do with the extending of distances between stops on certain of these trains.
  7. AVROs, in Oldham, won their step4/step5 playoff (they were 2nd behind Vauxhall Motors), Tier 9 to Tier 8, to reach the Northern Premier League Div 1 West; not so long ago they were playing in the Manchester League, which is below the football pyramid.
  8. Actually, it was. In the RN at least, the Stokers were the watchkeepers, and the Artificers did the mechanical maintenance. Perhaps The Kriegsmarine had a similar system. In the Merch, "fireman" was a specific rate, describing those who tended the boilers.
  9. Still no contact wire fitted in the area around the bridge over the M60, just the return wire
  10. Well, that's that! Lost 4 - 2 to Marske this evening, and relegation is confirmed. I suppose the only consolation is that we can't finish bottom. The lowest I've seen Stalybridge after 20 - odd years following them (NPL Division 1 West - Step 4, 8th tier) The only consolation is that my other team, Oldham, have just broken into the top half of the National League, after beating Southend. Those early bird S.T. prices aren't half looking tempting!
  11. Both from the footbridge. That second one must have been close to the end.
  12. West Street Crossing, between Belvedere and Erith, was four gates, hand - worked; traffic crossing to/from Battle Road/Pembroke Road wasn't much (up to the mid - 60s, so the crossing keeper often lefy two gates across the road, and two closed to the railway. I think the Keeper got train running information from the two boxes either side, Harrow Manorway and Erith Station. I'm not sure of the complete signalling arrangements, but London - bound was a succession of distants under homes for the entire length between the two stations. The crossing was abolished in the Dartford Loop resignalling in 1970.
  13. About 40% of it, no? Do they receive the 6 - monthly dividend payments?
  14. Not quite dead yet, after yesyerday's non - performance, but we now have to win both our final games and still hope some results go our way. It's not looking good for us either, given the players seem to be sunning themselves on the beach already.
  15. Nomura and so on? Where are HS2 Ltd. borrowing from? My understanding is that the government will only step in if the loans go bad; similar to what went on before the the war with the LNER Shenfield and Woodhead schemes. I suppose if it is direct government borrowing, they could arrange the bonds to mature in, say, 60 years
  16. As a stand - alone company, can't HS2 Ltd. borrow on the open market?
  17. You should try the Hollingworth - Tintwistle bypass on the A57/A628; it's been on the cards for 40 years, and the first part, about half a mile from the end of the M67, has not long been given DafT approval
  18. I used to go in when Dot and Ken ran the Saturday folk club, in the mid - 1970s. The beer was quite boring then. I think it was only when John and Sylvia took over that the beers got interesting
  19. I've heard of The Hags with The Bags, and The Tart with the Cart (Molly Malone) but not that one.
  20. Any modern day organisation, really
  21. They've got Belgian beer in the Buffet Bar, now! I don't think I've been in for about 6 years
  22. More meanderings; the first signal Eastbound out of Stalybridge (near Printworks Road overbridge) has exchanged the three - aspect placed at the last upgrade for a modern four - aspect modular. Also, on the return journey, whilst waiting at the lights at the end of Wakefield Road, above Stalybridge Tunnel, a train appeared at the statiopn going Leeds - ward, but on the middle platform. This is the first time I've seen it used in full Bi - directional mode.
