  1. Whilst rummaging through my hard drive looking for something else, I came across this photo I'd taken back in January 2018 while recording the imminent demise of the semaphore signals at Gilberdyke.
  2. Looked a tad different back in April 1998. Taken on a walk-out surveying the route prior to re-opening. I suppose this shot could also qualify for the 'Ghosts in the machine' thread.
  3. Would that be the same Frank Paterson that became the Eastern Region General Manager?
  4. Agreed, unless anyone models a 'U' bolt or double 'J' bolt, then you can have 'transposition' circuits as shown in the photo of @Jack P's OP. Also, again if anyone models one, you could have a saddle iron/bolt that sits on the very top of the pole (on top of the 'tin hat'), typically used for the block bell circuit that had 'earth return', not used everywhere, but certainly on 'secondary routes/branch lines' in the north east.
  5. Towards the top end of the Rylstone branch there is a TMO operated crossing at 5m 17ch (the only 'public highway' crossing on the branch, all the others being UWC and one foot path crossing). The crossing is protected by Stop Boards in each direction, and in the rear of these are two fixed distants. This is a photo of the one in the Up direction (towards Skipton) which is located between 5 3/4MP and 6MP. I'm not sure if the distants have now been replaced by 'reflectorised' type fixed distants.
  6. Barnetby East before the 2016 resignalling replaced the semaphore signals with colour lights. From left to right: Down Goods 61, 71. Down Main 47, 48, 50 (off) with Wrawby Junction distant (WJ132) below.
  7. Pre OHL days at York, so that's at least 34 years ago - so to some it is a period photo!
  8. A bit later than planned, but here are a few photos of semaphores that disappeared from Sleaford within the last few years. Sleaford West SW20 Up Main towards Rauceby. Sleaford West SW25 Shunt Spur to Siding/Up & Down Local Sleaford West SW16 Siding to Shunt Spur Signal on left (Down/Up Joint from Sleaford North): Top arm SW5; Middle arm SE2; Bottom arm SW9. Signal on right (Down Main from Rauceby): Top arm SW3; Middle arm SE2; Bottom arm SW7. Both signals also have Theatre type route indicators. Same two signals seen from the rear.
  9. Originally initiated in late Railtrack years and carried on into the early NR years, there was a drive by the Telecoms to eradicate the older style signal box Telephone Concentrators and Selective SPT cabinets with modern electronic "PABX" type switches. This meant that the older style "selective calling" type SPTs need changing out for modern "CB" type SPTs as shown in the photo. To echo Mike's other point for modellers of the "modern scene", who are particularly interested in getting signal details correct for place and time, the old "selective" type SPTs had all gone from the network by about 2010, and that most SPTs are now located at the end of a drivers walkway rather than being mounted on the actual signal post (a SPAD mitigation).
  10. C1661. A nice mixed consist for a relatively short freight.
  11. I think that is why the LED type signals have an "eyebrow" (top left) of 8 or so LEDs angled towards the track to help drivers see which aspect is being displayed when the "loco" is stood close to the signal.
  12. As this thread title includes 'repeaters' I thought this might be of interest (whilst I dig out some photos of semaphores at Sleaford that no longer exist). Although now gone, W215RR was Woodburn's 'outer' distant on the Down Worksop, located between Darnall and Woodhouse. It could only display a 'double yellow' or 'green' aspect, hence no SPT as no driver ever stopped at the signal. Photo taken whilst undertaking a survey in the area.
  13. Once the new signalling had been commissioned at Gilberdyke, for those signals that weren't immediately removed from site the lamps were extinguished, levers disconnected and arms fitted with a white cross pending removal of the now redundant signals.
  14. Some more from Gilberdyke. Gilberdyke's G14 (on the left), Up Hull towards Selby, and the back of G48 (on the right) on the Down Hull. G48 has obviously been renewed, hence the, as previously commented on other examples up-thread, 'over-engineered' appearance. The same two signals, but photographed from the opposite side. And a close up shot of G48 above the bushes.
  15. Another selection from Gilberdyke. Gilberdyke's G53 'off', Down Goole. Gilberdyke's G52 and Oxmardyke's O9R with passing 158905. The two disc signals are G31 and G32 on the Up Hull.
  16. A couple more from Gilberdyke. Gilberdyke's G45 and Oxmardyke's O9 both 'off', together with Oxmardyke's Down Home O10 also 'off'. With 142079 approaching on the Down Hull, Gilberdyke's G7 is 'off' for the route towards Goole. This time Gilberdyke's G13 is 'off' for the route towards Selby. Some more photos later.
  17. I must admit that the majority of my travels on 313s was cab riding whilst carrying out CSR checks on the GN area, so views on them will be somewhat different to the average fare paying punter, but I liked riding on them - but I was getting paid to do so.
  18. I know a lot of photos were "lost" a while ago when RMweb were having difficulties and changed 'server provider', but I hadn't realised that a number of my threads had also disappeared ('Gilberdyke', 'East London Line', etc.). However, not to worry, this thread gives me an opportunity to re-post some Gilberdyke photos again. Some were taken a couple of years or so before the Gilberdyke-Ferriby resignalling scheme started and culminated with the resignalling commissioning and the demise of the semaphores and the mechanical 'boxes. Here's the first batch: With a 158 in the Down platform (towards Hull) Gilberdyke G45 signal is 'off', with Oxmardyke's distant (O9) still 'on'. With Gilberdyke station platforms visible through the bridge (the Down platform is on the left), the signal protection the junction (the lines coming in from Goole on the right), Gilberdyke's G46, with Oxmardyke's distant O9R below. Gilberdyke's Up platform 'Starters'. G7 on the left (for the route towards Goole), and G13 on the left for the route towards Selby. I'm glad I made the effort to photo these signals when I did (and as many of the others in the area) because they are all gone now. More to follow when I get them sorted.
  19. York A1 60121 Silurian down ecs 1953 JVol2075 - the chap walking along the side of the tender is quite possibly a wheeltapper. I remember as a trainee at York back in the late 70s seeing a couple of them at work. Always fascinated me, walking along, nonchalantly swinging the hammer, and striking the wheel/tyre tread, listening for the wrong sound. Another lost skill of a bygone age.
  20. It might have been the Tramway that went along Osborne Road - looking at the 25"/mile map on the NLS site.
  21. I take it that those two signals on the left that we can see the back of, in what appears now to be the fence line, are a couple of redundant hump shunt/Toton type signals? Sorry I don't know the area, only guessing.
  22. As mentioned back in February, went on one of the steel works tours yesterday. A thoroughly enjoyable, and interesting, day out. If anyone is thinking about it, and if there are any spaces left for this years programme, I recommend the tour, very impressive. You get to see parts of the steel works not visible from passing on a train or a car. One or two photos, in no specific order;
