  1. I shall take up the honourable member's suggestion regarding the description of Castle Aching as a 'Principality' and shall go and correct the parish records, if nobody were to object? I also address a suggestion to our council's chairman regarding the possible inclusion of the Jubilee Hall on his model of the village. He is, naturally, entirely free to dismiss this suggestion.
  2. Oh yes, my apologies; One can't be allowed to partake in reasonable debate these days, nor be politically moderate.
  3. May I draw the attention of the council to this notice; https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/158850-the-jubilee-assembly-hall-castle-aching-norfolk/ No obligation to use that thread but I thought I'd create it anyway.
  4. Following on from the comments regarding political discussions in the Parish of Castle Aching, I propose that such discussions are hereafter moved to this Hall where they may be undertaken without interfering in the normal running of the parish. It is not my place, perhaps it is not even the place of the Parish Council as a whole, and indeed it is probably counter-intuitive and unnecessary to lay down specific rules for these discussions besides those unwritten rules of reason and decency that have prevailed thus far.
  5. What's wrong with political discussion? Heck there's precious little political discussion happening anywhere else, at least here it can be held with reasonable people who don't refuse to accept that others have valid opinions.
  6. Where, exactly, is Through? It clearly has excellent rail and road connections but nothing ever seems to stop there!
  7. As others have said; I intentionally included Telford outside of my overarching description of "Nice" because I am aware of its reputation!! I shall leave my intent with regard to Birmingham open to interpretation as that seems somewhat more controversial. Well if it was before they invented Telford you're alright! A warning, perhaps? I have a cousin at Cardiff... I shall indeed, hopefully! It's certainly better than my royally b*ggered previous abode.
  8. Ah, but could I have meant Birmingham to be something other than nice in a more positive sense; Greater even than 'nice'? I'll leave you to decide!
  9. Hardly a Nirvana, but it's below the Top Left-Hand Corner of Wales; Aberystwyth. Suitably cheery hymn tune to match the current weather... But I genuinely can't understand the complaints of feeling "locked in"; By Welsh standards the countryside here is mundane but as a native of Southeast England I find it extremely pleasant.
  10. As a university student I am, of course because all students are definitely like this, mortified at the prospect of potentially having to stay indoors, having to not meet in large, not spend all night in the town getting p*ssed, not allowed to attend horrendous parties, etc. As you can imagine the prospect of not being able to do any of those things is so utterly dreadful that I simply cannot think what I shall do to pass the time so I shall whinge to the local paper about how I feel imprisoned and unable to go anywhere. (Apparently some actually felt like that last week when in-person teaching was temporarily suspended. Clearly they think that prisons contain miles of rather nice country, a couple of decent hills, lots of public footpaths, passable bus and rail routes in and out to other nice places and to Telford, and even Birmingham too. Add to that the pile of kits in the corner, the Talyllyn Railway plus my tiny social circle and I think I might be able to cope despite the horrific hardships that I may yet suffer if in-person teaching is suspended again...)
  11. I had to be very careful to make sure my earphones were plugged into my phone before playing that again; I now live in Wales and I know there's at least one Irishman somewhere around here and probably a Scot somewhere too! Probably most of the others mentioned too, actually... Although meant entirely in jest, as I've always understood it, such details as that tend to get missed these days when people want to complain about things.
  12. If it's any help my avatar is an SECR F1 4-4-0 in SR Livery, so any SECR 4-4-0 would fit the bill. Failing that, put me down for something London Transport. For Mr @Hroth, his avatar is Liverpool & Manchester 'Lion' which did actually see use on BR Metals in the early 1950s as 'Thunderbolt' for a certain well-known filming job. It's also, I believe, steamed more recently in preservation too.
  13. I am in absolute awe... Very nice indeed!
  14. Hmm, yes. A much better suggestion, but still flawed as you suggest! And offering free relocation is hardly a sound suggestion either...
  15. In a sense, absolutely. But then again, I'd rather that than them to not exist at all. Exactly! My only trouble with Horsted (and Aldwych on LU) is that it appears in soooooo many film and TV productions!! I think Kingscote has a marginally more convincing atmosphere, although not so much correct appearance, at times because it's that much quieter but certainly Horsted has oodles of atmosphere when quiet. At Medstead, my MHR 'home', if one looks the right way and the atmosphere is right it is, as you say, almost possible to believe. Particularly at night (when the moon gives light and the ghost of the... Ooops, not Cliddesden!). I love the concept, but can think of a variety of flaws. If we have to do it anywhere, could it be the Isle of Wight please? And in the Thirties? A few Beyer Peacock 2-4-0Ts left, the Terriers and a few of the O2s as well please? Oh and forget about the economic depression; most people seem to...
  16. I agree entirely that it's hideously inaccurate, but it fits with the line's modern image and I am relishing the opportunity to gradually fashion myself a more pre-grouping style uniform than I could get away with on the MHR. Nowhere near that yet. And also it's more elaborate than what most other modern TR staff wear, from what I gather! The problem with preserved NG lines, with the possible exception of the VoR, L&B and other grouped lines is that they seem to have had little in the way of uniforms and now* are, invariably, more popular since preservation than at any time in their pre-preservation history. The modern TR cannot hope to replicate the original TR outside of photo charters as the original stock, facilities, infrastructure and staff levels would be absolutely inadequate to meet modern demand! Besides which, there's also public image to deal with. I agree that it would be lovely to see, and perhaps at Rhydyronen on a quiet day with the original stock it might be possible to get a sense of the old Talyllyn. Ultimately way back when it was a railway that could operate with probably about five people at most way back when. Today Wharf alone had a staff of eleven. That said, less busy lives like Tanfield seem to evoke that atmosphere much better even though it's more 'contrived', in a sense.
  17. There's time... But no, I'll pass on that. As for the hair...
  18. So long as none of them are what I got called this evening we're alright. Apparently this (My Talyllyn Winter Uniform); Looks like this; Which I suppose, in a vague way it might. But apparently it means that I must obviously be a Nazi. Last night the patrons of 'The Vale of Rheidol' pub decided I looked like this and yelled to me as such across the road; Or possibly they meant this; I think that possibly the latter two are more flattering in as much as at least they aren't SS officers!
  19. Quite possibly, although a good deal of opinions are deemed to be so invalid as to be not be worth listening to. Anyone who holds those opinions, or more accurately put doesn't hold the right opinions, is labelled as stupid or in some instances as a Fascist for no particularly good reason. I saw it, and was labelled as such, many times in college and expect the same to happen, probably more so, now that I'm in a university. I take it these are the proscribed opinions that you refer to?
