  2. All pretty academic. The challenges of getting modern rtr steam to haul those length trains round the proposed corners (they are not curves) plus the impossibility of proper access to areas of the lower level, not to mention the ridiculous helix doom this layout from the start. Several people have tried but it all falls on deaf ears.
  3. Having an enforced idle morning ive spent it reading through this thread and looking at all the iterations of this plan and the accompanying suggestions. Ive again come to the conclusion that no.72 is the only one that really sets out to achieve what your stated requirements are, for the following reasons. Not in any real order. 1.operationally interesting 2. Relative ease of construction. 3. Scenically interesting. 4. Having part of the mainline hidden loses the roundy roundy feel that would otherwise be present. 4.ease of access to the hidden areas by removable scenic boards. 5. The ability to get something running relatively quickly. I feel all of the other plans fall short on at least one or two of these points. Often a lot more than 2.
  4. But Phil in #72 the branch goes under the mainline then crosses a smaller viaduct behind ledbury viaduct which dominates. In fact scenically this promises to be the most attractive part of the layout. Also with part of the branch in tunnel it breaks it up nicely.

  7. Personally i think the way the branch runs will look very attractive. And the other side has 2 big advantages. 1. Easy to create a lift off section to access the nice and simple hidden track. 2. A nice and potentiality attractive scenic area. There is no need to have visible track everywhere. Sometimes less is more. Some of the most attractive layouts have small areas where there is no sign of the railway. We are, after all, creating a miniture world.

  9. i think there is a lot to be said for keeping the continuous option. It is handy for running in locos and stock if nothing else. #72 achieves this nicely with no real access or other problems and uou still have end to end for 'proper' operating.
  10. Original as in Withdrawn from BR, sometime during its career or as built? Using preserved locomotives for details such as frame detail is a minefield. With the LNER in particular, frames were regularly changed at overhaul, plus major repairs during its lifetime, details will change dramatically. Indeed, at its most recent overhaul, the front of the frames were completely renewed. Scotsman is well known to be a historical nonsense, owing to the way it has been modified during preservation, the BR livery it now carries is the only near authentic livery for it.

  13. Totally agree. There is a guy near to me who collects Hornby pre-nationalisation steam. Doesnt even take them out of the box for display. Crazy. But whatever rocks his boat, i guess

  16. Interestingly, i can recall exactly the same views being commonplace in the 70's and 80s. Not enough young blood coming into the hobby, rtr killing off the creative side of the hobby etc. When i was in my teens i was the only member of a club under 40. Back then we wouldnt in our wildest dreams have imagined the strides the hobby would make. Judging by some of the threads on rmweb, it seems there are a lot of younger modellers producing great work. I personally get my main enjoyment from kit and scratchbuilding. Having now got my bench laid up its great to be building again after a long layoff, but sourcing some parts is proving difficult. Does anyone know what is happening with marckits wheels? Are the supply problems a yemporary glitch or should i be placing an order with Gibson?
  17. I dont bother removing. Just use the glue over the existing grass. It adds depth.
  18. Not one person with experience has supported your plan. People have made a lot of effort to give you advice. But anything that points towards the utter stipidity of it, you dont like. Not wasting anymore time on you same as several other people.
  19. you have not had generalisations, you have had facts from several people. We are all clearly wasting our time. Beginning to think this is a wind up. OF COURSE YOU HAVE HIDDEN TRACK. Most of the low level is hidden since it is inaccessible.

  21. You ask but you dont listen. Youve had it explained over and over why the WHOLE concept of your lower level will not work. Since you do not listen to sound advice just get on with it and learn the hard way.
