  1. Hi Corbs, I feel your pain, painting is my least favourite part of finishing a model, I've had similar problems as you. Here are some suggestions that may help, some of which I use & some from friends which I haven't tried yet, but may be of use. When painting, warm the spray can before using it, stick it in a jug of hot water (from the kitchen tap, not the kettle) & leave it for about 15 minutes before shaking. Also warm the model up with a hairdryer on low setting. Both of these seem to help the paint stick to the model. Make sure the paint is fully cured before masking for a second coat. Paint that seems dry to the touch may not be fully dry all the way through to the base layer, so applying and removing tape too soon lifts the paint. I have a mate who leaves the first coat of paint to dry until he can't smell the solvents in the paint any longer, meaning they have all evaporated and the paint is fully dry. With paint bleed, one tip I have heard (but not tried) is when you have masked the model, spray another thin layer of the 'masked' colour over it to seal the edge of the tape (in your case the yellow), and allow that to dry. Then when you spray the second colour it can't bleed under the tape (in theory anyway). What sort of masking tape are you using? The ordinary decorator's masking tape is too 'sticky' for our uses, which might be another reason why it is removing the numbers from your 47, you really need something like the Tamiya tape https://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/tamiya-masking-tape-refill-6mm/580565-1000 on the surface of a model. Please don't take any of what I've said as criticism, I'm offering these as suggestions that may help with the issues you are having, if anyone else has any suggestions I'd be interested in them as well. Like I say, painting isn't my favourite bit of modelling! HTH Regards Paul
  2. It is based on a Sharp Stewart design exported to Spain in 1880, discussed here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/42181-0-3-0-t-kerr-stuart/?p=572760 HTH Moxy
  3. That motor looks very like one that was in an Airfix GMR 61xx Prairie tank I had many years ago. (That is not to say Airfix didn't use Pittman motors of course) HTH Moxy
  4. Yes, Wigan North Western. Operated by Virgin, but some of the services through it are run by Northern (when they can be bothered running them of course)
  5. For all those people who don't like change, this is what RMWeb used to look like in 2006... https://web.archive.org/web/20060118054128/http://www.118go.co.uk:80/rmweb/index2.htm We have all managed to move on from there, I'm sure any new version will be fine. Moxy
  6. Thanks Gordon, According to BDCA website, that went to Midland Railway Trust Butterly, at least it was there in 2013. Here's a picture of the other side of it, also taken at Spring Branch https://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/7360511788/ Moxy
  7. Ha ha, not quite Bob! I'm a bit further south than Chequerbent, I live about 300 yds from where Atherton Bag Lane station used to be.
  8. Wonder where this fine machine went - I think it was preserved ? - it was always busy around the Wigan / Warrington area. Brit15 Hi Apollo, if you know the number of it, this site http://www.bdca.org.uk/index.html may be useful. I have tried to blow up your image, but all I can make out is '***001' which may be a Springs Branch designation, rather than its TOPS number. HTH Moxy
  9. It was Executive Dark Grey. This was an experimental livery around the time they were working out what became Large Logo Blue. A pity it wasn't adopted, I think the dark grey with yellow ends looks quite smart.
  10. It will be in this thread somewhere http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/105523-oxford-diecastgolden-valley-ye-janus-0-6-0de/ HTH
  11. Cheap pan scourers (last lot I found were £1 for a pack of 10), cut into strips & covered with flock can make hedges. The contents of tea bags for ground cover (I'd hesitate to call that tea leaves, it's more a case of tea dust, but more useful for our purposes)* Pan splatter guard provides fine mesh, can be used for fencing. *To dry tea 'dust' and coffee grounds mentioned earlier, put some kitchen roll on a baking tray, spread the damp tea or coffee on it, leave it in a warm oven until dry, around 50C.
  12. Ben OK, I'll throw my twopenn'orth in. First of all, I'm no expert and I can't find a dimensioned drawing to back this up, but getting the front of the cab, the locos 'face' right, is all important to the overall look. Having seen your CAD designs on page 1, it does look like you have captured the right shape. The reason the Bachmann one is wrong is because someone incorrectly assumed the cab front is the same width as the loco body, and it isn't, it is very slightly narrower at the front than the back wall of the cab. By making the sides of the loco parallel all the way along, that meant the front is too wide and the arc over the windows is too shallow, which makes its face look wrong. I cannot tell you where the taper starts or how much narrower the front is on the real things, but ironically that is something that Hornby Railways with ther R.068 of 1977 managed to get spot on, whatever other faults that model may have! I have seen on RMWeb Bachmann Rats with Hornby cab transplants to fix the too wide cab problem. Regards Moxy
  13. The models come direct from China, and since Australia is closer to China than the UK is, you will get your orders first. This has happened before with a previous Hornby new release (was it an earlier batch of Pecketts? can't remember now), because it was commented on at the time. That's good news for anyone in the UK who has ordered one, it at least confirms they have been shipped and are on their way.
  14. If you're looking for something with a more modern cab, but still LMS/Midland/Derby inspired, how about the NCC WT Geep? https://farm5.static.flickr.com/4185/34597837906_7a3b75d78f_b.jpg That has extended bunker, different cab windows & other detail differences compared to what ran on the mainland. Perhaps your 2-6-4 N Class could be a taper boiler version of the WT? (or inspired by it.)
  15. Hi Tom Stirling locos (outside cylindered ones at least) seem to have the smokebox wing plates 'faired in' to the cylinders, which with the RTR chassis is going to be difficult to achieve. How about these examples as inspiration? https://ribblesteam.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/the-king-new.jpg http://www.southdevonrailwayassociation.org/Images/John_Brodribb/Bellerophon_lowloader-sml.jpg Not tender locos like yours, both are E Borrows & Son well tanks, but it shows a slightly different treatment of wing plates/footplate/cylinder joint which might work with your design. Perhaps a separate cylinder cover to go over the Hornby one would work? HTH Moxy
  16. One of the reasons for insurance is to return the owner of the property to the position they were in before the loss. It is known as having an insurable interest in the property (in this case a car). In the quote above (my highlights), it is not the youngster who would suffer the financial loss, it's the parent. The youngster doesn't have an insurable interest in this scenario, so it's unlikely insurers would pay out in the event of a claim.
  17. In response to NCB in post 13 - probably Carriage Stock of Minor Standard Gauge Railways (Locomotion Papers) - R W Kidner ISBN 0853612277HTH Moxy

  19. Was that article not just called the Dyserth Branch? IIRC it was an inglenook layout in EM built in a folding paste table. If it is the same one I'm thinking of, it's in Scale Model Trains July 1984 (and possibly continued in August 1984 issue). HTH Moxy
  20. If Door 5 is opposite Door 1, then whatever it is must have 4 Doors per side (1 - 4 down one side & 5 - 8 down the other). Any suggestions?
  21. Hi Red Try this link to Hornby Service Centre https://www.Hornby.com/uk-en/downloads/view/index/cat/21/ The Pug is sheet 214. It doesn't specifically tell you how to dismantle it, but it does show where the screws are, so you may be able to work it out from there. HTH Moxy

  23. That conjured up an image of a computer server at Cambridge Analytica going bang and releasing its magic smoke.... Made me smile!
  24. I see the row behind is full, yet nobody wants to park anywhere near that Fiat Multipla. I wonder why?
