  1. This is almost certainly a mistake in the book. The formation in 1957 was all of BR origin other than the Dining vehicles. The Torbay Express Formation gained a Mk1 RU and SO in 1958 to compete the set. I have seen photos of the train consisting of Mark 1s and a 70 foot GWR kitchen car.
  2. Winston Churchill was at NRM Shildon when I made a visit there last year. At least the can of processed meat that bears his name was anyway.
  3. I wasn’t going to bother with the tiresome ‘nothing in it for me’ post. But it’s actually worse than that. The only pre order I had from last year, the macaw, has been cancelled. Negative one new models for me doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.
  4. I was in the away end at the Cardiff City Stadium tonight watching my beloved Albion. It might take me until the weekend to warm back up but the 3 points help in the biting cold.
  5. KR do love superlatives don’t they. I did make a comment in the aforementioned thread (which I would say was a fair comment) but quickly ran for the hills as it rather descended into quite personal jibes. I hope they do a good job and are vindicated in their choice with strong sales.
  6. Looks like they’ve used an N gauge arrows of indecision on an OO loco too, just emptying out the spares box.
  7. As much as I have no use for these, it has certainly whetted my appetite for the corridor versions whenever they appear.
  8. I’m not entirely sure how open Mrs Mallowan (A. Christie) would have been to people visiting her country abode whilst she was still resident. My grandmother knew her personally through her role as secretary to her solicitors in Torquay in the late 40s/ early 50s. I also can’t think of many other rivers/estuaries that were served by the GWR on both banks. Off the top of my head I can only think of the Cleddau being rail served both at pembroke dock and Neyland; the Tamar and the Severn at various places.
  9. Not quite yet anyway. To me this is the biggest open goal for GWR/BR WR steam. Only 20 ish years in service but 4 livery options and probably the most different looking of GWR 4-6-0s for all those that moan all Swindon engines look the same. Add to that the new build interest. I’d buy at least 2 (more likely 3 or 4 over successive runs)
  10. Those second radius curves really do spoil the illusion, and those plastic ferns are far too vivid
  11. Given that the announcement video opened with a Standard 5 (I thought for a second that was the subject of the announcement) and ended with an 8F are we to take that as a hint, I wonder?
  12. Diagram A44 auto. Converted from d117 brake thirds in 1955. There is a comet kit available
  13. Plymouth Argyle caught a regular train service to their championship fixture with Watford last week. There weren’t enough seats so some players were sat on the floor. I doubt they’ll be using rail travel for the rest of the season.
  14. I really should finish the layout before buying more locomotives, so of course a new arrival from Accurascale is being run in. Looked too good to pass up.
  15. Finger nail did not work. Easing carefully with a scalpel blade did. There was some glue holding each one in, as evidenced by the residue on both pieces and inside the cylinders but luckily only a small amount. I don’t think I’ll be able to stop myself ordering more examples from batch two. The longer you look at the model the more detail you see.
  16. I was going to wait until the second batch identities were revealed to see if the particular livery/number combination I want would be in there before taking the plunge. But I got impatient and ordered Torquay Manor to rename/number as it has the correct livery and tender (as far as I can make out) for 7821 circa 1959. I must say I’m incredibly impressed. Especially by the weight of the thing. My only question is how on Earth do you get the cylinder fronts off to swap for the ones in the detail pack? Has anyone else managed it? They feel as though they are glued in.
  17. Maybe a D800 series warship, then along with the Bulleid Pacifics mentioned here and the already announced class 50, that pretty much has traction for Waterloo-Exeter trains sewn up for around 40 years. I find the Bachmann model okay but I’d like the option of original nose design pre head code boxes and I’m sure Accurascale could make all kinds of general improvements to make it worthwhile.
  18. Looks like someone has attempted to paint the warning panel with a yellow highlighter pen too, maybe send them a link to railmatch paints.
  19. From zooming in on the photo, the final number definitely looks like a “2” as it seems identical in shape to the second figure out of the 4. On that basis and from what has been said previously 3262 would seem likely to me.
  20. By all accounts one was sent for work at Newton Abbot at some point, which may, at a stretch, make it plausible for a future project I have planned. But I have no idea which one it was or when so for now I’ll hold off although they do look very nice.
  21. How about some 70’ GWR stock of one variety or another? Admittedly not much use for inter regional trains but key stock for trunk route express trains, either as full rakes when new or dotted about amongst other varieties later on.
  22. I wonder if maybe they avoided the post war livery due to the off centre positioning? As we saw from recent releases from other manufacturers, people tend to comment that it looks wrong, even if correct for the prototype.
  23. Unfortunately @B15nac, there hasn’t been much progress. I had a change of job in September which has seen me work away from home more often. And I’m also getting married in a couple of months, so most free time has been spent doing bits related to that. I haven’t had the spare time available to really get my teeth into modelling as I would have liked. The turntable has been completed as per the kit, but still needs westernising before fitting. I’ll post a couple of photos from the last time the layout was set up to keep the thread going. Hopefully I’ll find some more time to move forward with the project in the coming months.
  24. Few nice shots on colour rail. Including one at Goodrington in 1961 behind a pannier (ref 313337). Which gives me cause to order one for a planned layout of somewhere on the Torbay branch around that period.
