  1. Thanks John--I think you are correct when you say that the new emblem would be applied when the tender went in to works for the cut down modification. regards, Ed
  2. Hello gentlemen, Have updated/ condensed my Original style M.N spreadsheet as a means of best selecting a loco.from the first Hornby offers for my era . (1956-58) My first purchase therefore will be 35028 renumbered/renamed to 35030--this will run alongside the rebuilt 3501ORIGINAL MERCHANT NAVY LOCO DATA.xlsx8/35020. I have simply trawled through various books and data from numerous sources etc. to compile a single A4 spreadsheet for easy reference. I hope it may be of use to others. regards, Ed
  3. Gentlemen----very interesting--it begs the question what is the rear positioned safety valve body for----surely it cannot be for any of the initial 4 releases. I think in due course we are going to see a fantastic array of variant pieces to meet most needs. regards, Ed
  4. Graham, Having seen the 4 body variants with one only with resited safety valves, is this one going to be 35023 ? Presumably this will be coupled to a 6000G. H.S tender. Is the full spec of 35023 available for public use? i.e early emblem, minus cyl. valance etc. Thank you, Ed
  5. Gentlemen, I duly visited the Mid Hants yesterday and measured both sides of Wadebrige; that is the extreme lenth between the outer edges of the sand filler openings. Both measurements were 6 feet and 9 inches = 27 mms in 4mm/foot scale. Therefore the Hornby model equivalent of 26 mms is not too far off (there may well be differences between locos--could not measure Swanage because it was all in bits and pieces). The Fox plates are therefore too long at 30 mms. Does anyone know of a correct length source? Regards, Ed
  6. Am visiting the Mid Hants this Saturday so hopefully can check this out. Ed
  7. Andy---whose nameplates did you use--they seem exactly the right length spanning the extreme distance between the sand filler holes.I have some from Fox Transfers that are too long. Also do they come with scroll and cabside/smokebox number plates? Thanks, Ed
  8. Ian---thank you--am opting for the Fox plates to replace Wilton. regards, Ed
  9. Hi Mr Roundhouse, How did you finalise your Combe Martin nameplate project and have you got any view on my last post on this thread? Thank you, Ed
  10. Gentlemen, Would you believe I have just got round to putting the Fox Combe Martin nameplates on and it is very obvious that the nameplate length exceeds the extreme distance between the sand box fillers. The nameplate length is 29mms. The distance between the sand fillers on the Hornby models is 26mms(extreme left to right). The corresponding distance on 4mm scale drawings is 28.5 mms. The 29 and 28.5 figures match up and seem to agree with pics of the real loco. Obviously one of these dimensions is wrong--which one please? regards, Ed
  11. Please tell me how your picture of TWATT is at all relevent to this topic--it isn,t funny, smart and seems entirely innapropriate and extremely rude.I would hold this view irrespective of who might be your target. Ed
  12. Graham----thank you--I now know what little I need to do to convert to 35030 as running in original form,1955-58 much obliged, Ed
  13. I am glad that you can be so tolerant on certain matters, regards, Ed
  14. Thank you --I have the former and it does contain lots of good info.I do not have the latter so I,ll be on the look out. Ed
  15. Graham, Thank you for the date. The second option therefore with resited s. valves would cover the period -- Dec. 1954 through to August 1958. This represents the longest time period (3 and 2/3 years)" in fixed guise" and maybe the best selling window? regards,Ed
  16. Hi John, We are told that 35028 will be minus the front cylinder fairing and that it will have Br green livery +early crest. That dates it from June 1953 and beyond. It is stated that its safety valves were resited Dec. 1954. If modelled with all the above in mind and safety valves as originally sited,it would cover the period 6/53 to 12/54. If modelled after s.valve resiting it would cover the period from Dec. 1954 until it received the second emblem--and this was before rebuilding in Otober 1959. So far from reference books I have found that 35028 ran with the early crest certainly as late as 23/6/57 and no doubt somewhat beyond. On the other hand I have seen a pic. with second emblem as early as Sept. 1958. Does anyone know when 35028 received the second emblem? That would then fix the time frame for the second option with valves resited. We aso know it will have the 6000g. H.S tender, std deflectors, revised cab etc. Flat sided con rods as opposed to fluted seemed to arrive 1955/6. regards,Ed ps--as you may be aware I am trying to get to the bottom of this for onward conversion to either 35027 or 35030 --maybe with some compromise.
  17. Graham----I see from your blog that R3436 is pretty well specified reference overt changes. I would not wish to improperly drag out into the open other detailed changes if they are privy at this stage or indeed not yet determined----but is it known if original or resited safety valves will feature--plain or fluted coupling rods ? The info will tell me how easy or otherwise it will be to convert from 35028 to 35030 or 35027. Thank you, Ed
  18. Gentlemen--have just had confirmation from Hattons that my order remains--sorry if I raised concerns unduly but the communications I received which were then confirmed by the" can I help chat line" initially convinced me that this was the case.
  19. Andy----I immediately queried the cancellation of my order for R3436 via the Hattons chat line. Apparently in a very considered way they came back to confirm that this was the case and that they were very sorry. As for placeholders; Hattons had identified all 4 variants on their website--presumably as per information relayed from Hornby. There was no doubt as to which one I had ordered and wanted----R3436.--the details covered, livery crest as well as name/number Something rather unprofessional is going on.
  20. Gentlemen--my 2 pennoth is not directly related to the above post--I have just had confirmation from Hattons that all 4 identified M.Navy models have been cancelled by Hornby--no reason given. My order with them for R3436 is now a thing of the past. Has anyone else been made aware of this? A disappointed Ed Plant
  21. My records (not my memory) tell me that 35028 received the second logo 7-11-59 and repainted BR green/front casing removed-12-6-53. 35023 never received the BR blue livery . It came out in malachite and was repainted BR green 22-3-52.Its front casing was removed 5-53. Hope this is helpful--I am following the Hornby M.N news/updates very closely and hope to convert 35028 to 35030 for the period 1955-58. In this way it can happily co-exist with my rebuilt 35018 on the Bournemouth run-especially on the Bournemouth Belle.
  22. Gentlemen--- -----------------following advice offered by my good friend 250 BOB/BOB250,a regular contributer on the web; I did the following with positive results. I removed the 2 screws holding the dcc ready plug-in base.I then placed it further back in the tender, away from the curved underside--thereby creating more headroom.I put insulating material on the 2 parallel copper pick-up strips on the tender base.I then black tacked the plug- in base in position.I plugged in the TCSDP2X-UK decoder. Note that I still found it necessary to remove all 3 ballast weights--probably because I used the thick Lenz decoder sticky pad. However there is ample space to introduce ballast elsewhere. This approach does away with the dremmel cut option. It is possible that the dcc ready base for the decoder sits at varying heights inside the tender ;hence the variety of solutions offered. regards, Ed
  23. Frank, Thank you for your latest posting. It is obviously one hell of a layout and one I would give my right arm to see. However the next best thing is the updates you continue to provide. Do they have any open day events?--distance no object here--North Staffordshire quite close! Best regards,Ed And thank you again for your past help ref. my efforts to recreate Bournemouth West/Central etc
  24. devonseasider---I have tried the TCS DP2X-UK but cannot get the tender top back on. Have firstly got the front lug in place but the rear will not push down flush. When I remove the chip there is no problem. The chip when inserted sits well up from the dcc ready base and I think comes into contact with the underside sloped part of the front tender top when trying to refix.I do not think that the chip can be made to sit lower. Any ideas appreciated, thanks and regards, Ed
