  1. And now Newey is alleged to be moving on. https://www.pitpass.com/77208/The-Newey-nonsense
  2. ISTR reading they only made about 21k in total. Like a number of other prestige models in ordinary marques, I bet the vast majority "sold" in UK were actually Dealer Principal cars.
  3. The Talbot I recall from that era was the Tagora, a big rangy saloon with lovely styling. I think the few sold in UK disappeared without trace.
  4. I believe NHY 581 spent some years in a respected profession that required him to rub very close shoulders with some such.
  5. Hardly marks him out in present company, does it?
  6. Not in 1974. Probably the slow to Ashford. Tonbridge - Hastings electrification was still a decade way.
  7. I recall as a teen walking up through the fields from Port Gaverne to the Cornish Arms for a pint. I have a feeling railway author Peter Coster lives close by.
  8. https://www.pitpass.com/77201/Massa-sues-F1-the-FIA-and-Bernie-Ecclestone Another good windmill-tilt is just what the sport needs.
  9. Point taken here, Tim, but the very existence of several newcomers in the market has had the effect of causing everyone to expect more, and the manufacturers themselves to ensure we get it. While we might not all agree about particular details, the luxury of quality is always welcome - if we can afford it. And if prices push beyond what the market will generally bear, we will soon become aware by the degree of discounting.
  10. The sodium issue had been detected when the cardiologist (not the Consultant Cardiosurgeon) prescribed this particular drug, and a wary GP required a blood-test soon after. On receiving the results he immediately txted Sherry to stop taking the drug at once. This was no more than 12 months before the heart op. Interestingly, Sherry now finds she has online access to much of the patient file at her GP surgery. So when the hospital says it will write to them, she knows a letter has or has not arrived, and if so, what is says!
  11. In November 2022, recovering from open-heart surgery, Sherry was prescribed a med that we knew would deplete her sodium levels - previous experience. I protested to the nurse but she gaily said twice a day would be fine. Later that night Sherry needed a sodium infusion, interrupting the blood transfusion she was already receiving, as her levels were now dangerously low. The Consultant was not impressed, as clearly all this would have been in her notes. But who would be bothering to read those?
  12. It is evident that we each have a slightly different definition of authenticity. I would argue that much of the brake gear and underfloor detail now provided is only actually visible if the darned vehicle turns turtle - yet we all commend its presence. When filming All The President's Men in the 1970s - about Nixon and Watergate - many scenes were filmed in a representation of the Washington Post offices. I believe that the director insisted that the rubbish in the waste bins was printed with relevant copy. No-one saw the contents of the bins in the film - but it added authenticity. St E expressed surprise at compartment stock having ads and mirrors. It certainly did. I recall one journey where some unspeakable bounder had clearly removed the original ad and replaced it with "There will be a meeting for all qualified railway vandals at Wimbledon on such-and-such a date".

  15. Stewart that sounds hideous. 10 weeks in dock is a lifetime. I hope they have really got it right this time.
  16. Like that Spams chappie, I have to tender apologies again. I will try to drop a few coins in the tin, Rob.

  18. Opportunities missed - in 1981/2 my boss, the Operating Officer for the SED, was a former SM at Bailey Gate..... Sadly he's been dead 30 years.
  19. Elsewhere in Milligan's Memoirs, ISTR a tale of North Africa, where orderlies used petrol as a disinfectant in the latrines. This could provide spectacular results for anyone smoking while completing his daily requirements.....
  20. And this was the original prototype, with an illustrious history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavell_Van
