    I’m glad your models are fine. Mine , regrettably, are not. 
     

    I think the comparison is both valid and sustainable. I have numerous locos from both manufacturers which were picked up for £150 or less, and all of the wheels went round without wobbling.

     

    I wish that this were not the case, I’d rather have a model that I didn’t have to umm and aaaah over about whether to keep it, but there you go

  2. Okay, so I’ve had the chance to run mine now and I have a few observations 

     

    PRO

     

    - Extremely handsome model, captures the look of the prototype nicely

    - great separately fitted detail - no glue marks etc.

    - smooth runner 

     

    CON


    - slight ‘banana-ing’ of the body on my model has led to a minor mis-alignment the cab. Not a dealbreaker for me personally as it’s only really visible when it’s looked for, but it’s there

    - don’t like the pony truck/bogie design. Rear pony truck is very prone to detailing on anything less than perfect track and the front bogie seems very stiff 

    -rather bent coal railings

    - both the pony and the bogie wheels are not square on the axles, so there is pretty significant wheel wobble on my example

     

    not terribly impressed for £150 to be honest. The equivalent-priced Hornby/Bachmann models tend not to banana and for all of their other faults, have straight wheels

  3. I did see this - I must say that the fact that this announcement is on neither their web page, nor on any of Hornby’s social media is a bit weird and makes me question if this is correct or not. 
     

    not questioning anyone’s good faith actions in putting this up here for people. It’s just weird that it is nowhere to be seen from Hornby themselves - it’s not the sort of thing you’d expect someone to keep quiet about, especially if they are hoping to catch up on product deliveries this year

    Sad really I'm sure a truer tale could have been told in a way that was positive for them.  They love a bit of false jeopardy, a race to secure the license, piped at the post by some dastardly American company after the catalogues went to press....

    Makes you wonder if this whole segment was completely shot after the event?  I've not bothered to note if everyone involved is wearing the same clothes in events that are supposed to be happening months appart?


    Without being privy to any actual information, my assumption on this would be that having had their knuckles rapped, Hornby just wanted to steer very very far clear of even thinking about mentioning the Titfield Thunderbolt and as a side benefit this presented them with a chance to airbrush the whole episode from history for PR purposes

    I’m fairness, I think that if he did, it would have been the result of the TV company making a foolish edit. These are the same filmmakers who put the tender the wrong way around on a merchant navy after all..

  6. Not sure of precise dates, but I believe Southern, Eastern and Western were amongst the first to divest themselves of steam in the early 1960s (63-64). The north eastern and Scottish followed (66-67ish) and the London Midland was the last in 1968.

     

    however, as always the devil is in the detail. Steam continued on ad hoc in all of these regions as needed and there wasn’t really a blanket ban imposed on steam traffic for any of them until the end of steam proper in 1968, although any steam activity would have increasingly become the exception rather than the rule. After 1968 the only steam on BR rails would have been Flying Scotsman and the Rheidol locos until railtours began again.

    Devils advocate - They’re in business to make money, and these coaches represented a substantial asset. Their job is to sell to whoever will buy them, as unfair to some end users as it is

  8. I know that the folk at accurascale must be getting fed up of this question, but do we have any idea when the mk5 pre orders will go up for general sale?

     

    I’m only asking because I’m in an unavoidable meeting tomorrow and my boss is not likely to take it too well if I duck out to buy model trains :) 

     

    even if it was a ‘not tomorrow afternoon’ that would help me not stress about it :)

  9. Quick question for those in the know - the latest Hornby magazine review says that the smoke generator on board runs ‘independently’ of the decoder. Does this mean that I’d be able to replace the fitted decoder with a Hornby Bluetooth decoder without affecting its functionality, or is the installed chip the only one which would work the system properly?

  10. I believe that each new model is a bit different to the others. But each model will be produced with permission of the original tool-owner, who would no doubt also profit from the arrangement.

     

    I suspect that it’s simply a business agreement between two companies to supply new versions of previous toolings under the EFE brand or to occasionally produce new projects like the N gauge 17 which was resurrected from the end of DJ Models

    My comments were directed at the general treatment of KR models on here in previous projects, which I personally believed to be far too far to be considered reasonable, rather than in this specific instance. The comments were made in response to a post which was stating that they wished KR Models would respond on here (or words to that effect). My position on this is that considering the manner in which their representatives in the forum were treated previously that it is hardly surprising that they choose to avoid it.

     

    nonetheless, my words appear to have had a different effect to those I intended, so I have saved everyone the bother of reading them by deleting the initial post. I’ll also refrain from posting again from now on
