  1. Boris, is the back road you mentioned the one that goes to the new holiday cottages under the south end of the viaduct?
  2. Ah, if you come into Whitby from the Grosmont direction along the A171, but turn left onto the A174 as though you were going into Whitby, rather than going right onto the Scarborough road at the traffic lights just after the road bridge to the north of Prospect Hill junction, you then drop down the bank (Downdinner Hill?). I then park up on Hanover Terrace (a left turn) & walk from there up Southend Gardens (I think). The railway went across there on a brick bridge & there are steps at the east side of the formation & IIRC a gentle ramp on the West side to gain access to the trackbed. I thought that was the south end of the West Cliff station area, but no matter. You're right about the bits & pieces at Prospect Hill - folk just wander past without realising what there still is to be seen... I'd very much appreciate the tour sometime. Thank you - and if I had a decent internet connection on board here I'd look at Google Earth for your suggestion of a parking area too Good luck finding that WTT & the SA - would be very interested to hear details. Best, Mark
  3. Hi Sean There's easy access to the trackbed at the site of West Cliff station, & you can usually get parked at a good Yorkshire price (free!) close by Cheers Mark

  5. OK, as mentioned in another thread, I'm trying to put together lists of workings on the S & W. I've got some notes from my initial skim through my library at home. I'm away at sea now until April, but I have brought the notes with me. Here's the first two - more to follow, & if anyone else wishes to join in, or has further information, please don't hesitate to get posting Where possible I have mentioned number of carriages being hauled Book - Scarborough & Whitby Railway Centenary Volume – J Robin Lidster Front cover B1 61319 with Inspection Saloon, northbound Plate 10 EE Type 4 D352 southbound pass excursion 1Z26 at Scalby, May 19th 1964 (Another photo of this working is in Backtrack Vol 22 #2, the train is approaching Ravenscar tunnel). Or perhaps scratching whilst building? *gets coat...*
  8. Watching 44767's valve gear in motion is fascinating. it all seems so convoluted when compared to the classic Walschaerts gear. I'm following this thread with great interest

Not sure if that would stand up in court, tbh
  10. Does anyone else remember the layout in Watson Prickards, Liverpool?
  11. "The Tudors" - check out the central heating radiators...
  12. That MPD 3F dates back to the mid-70s, of course. Not too many small motors back then. Lovely kit though
  13. Hi Tim. Yes, an opportunity lost, for sure. Ravenscar Tunnel, if opened out into a cutting (as, of course, is was intended to be...) would have taken away a big operating problem. OK, you'd still have reversals at both ends, but with DMU stock that's not a major issue. I'm not sure that the Whitby-Boulby section, including that bridge at Staithes, could have a business case though. Too many problems with coastal erosion & infrastructure. You've still got the Esk Valley, of course, and route duplication undermines the case for that section further. Mark

  16. Panels of track? Why am I now thinking of Wallace & Gromit?

    EBay madness

Agreed. There's been cases of folk bidding stupid money for, inter alia, a photograph of the latest must-have gaming consoles
  18. is feeling old - my youngest child is 18 today...

  19. OK, question time. There are photographs of EE Type 4 D352 hauling working 1Z26 southbound over the line on 19th May 1964. It's thought that this was the only time that a main line diesel locomotive travelled the whole length of the line, unless anyone knows different? For anyone interested, there's a photo of the train coming off Scalby viaduct in Robin Lidster's "The Scarborough & Whitby Railway - a Centenary Volume", and I understand that the late Ken Hoole took a photo of it whilst it was climbing the 1 in 39 to Ravenscar. Further details of this working would be appreciated; sadly the wonderful 6 Bells website hasn't got this one at present.
  20. is doing handover notes

  21. It also shows the value of photographs of the locomotive you wish to model, preferably in the period you want. As Arthur says, it's a minefield, and not just tenders, of course... Looking forward to seeing the finished article now, David - it's really coming on well. Mark

Well, it was subsequently dropped to £285, and I see it's now 'only' £245... ...still too much?
  23. MarkC

    EBay madness

I see that the price has now dropped... Slashed from £28,500.00 ... to.... ....wait for it... Only £2850.00 - and still with free postage
  24. Hi David As far as we know, the materials used are original, & the layout dates back to the late 70s/early 80s. At that time there was very little choice of suppliers, so it will almost certainly have been Slaters. Materials have come a long way since those days, so it may well be a combination of age, material, heat, sunlight etc etc. I guess the lesson here is to try & reduce as many variables as possible; OK, age we can't avoid, but how our precious models are cared for, we can. This is a very interesting thread, for all sorts of reasons Mark
