  1. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-42236003 While I don't have a problem with 1st class disappearing off trains, considering that having 1st class sections on trains on suburban and outer suburban services is a bit pointless and wastes usable space, I'm not so sure about the the quiet carriages going as well. If I', travelling any distance and a quiet carriage is available I'll use it to get away from the yakking of people on their mobiles or watching movies and music on their tablets even with headphones...not to mention the screaming kids and couples having arguments!!! The quiet carriages are just a pleasant place to enjoy the journey and read a book in peace and quiet....well relative peace and quiet in a Mk 3
  2. Another film cropped up on Talking Pics TV on Monday "It Always Rains on Sunday" starring Googie Withers, John McCallum, Jack Warner & Susan Shaw. Getting repeated on Saturday 9th Dec 4pm and has some railway scenes near the end. According to Reel Streets it was filmed around the East End of London with some scenes at Temple Mills marshalling yard, complete with NE/Eastern region 0-6-0T's http://www.reelstreets.com/index.php/component/films/?task=view&id=486&film_ref=it_always_rains_on_sundays&start=20
  3. Where is Esther Rantzen when you need her!!!
  4. Just finished watching Hell is a City on Talking Pics TV starring Stanley Baker but with lots of other faces that would become famous. If you were a Manchester resident in 1960 you might find it very interesting and there were a few railway related shots in the film. I can't see it being repeated though in the schedules so it might be one of those films you have to wait for for it to come round again.
  5. I think that while not being THE future it is certainly one of several possible futures for Britain's railways as long as there can be a case for "Value for Money" for the reinstatement of the line. I think there is a presumption in many people's minds that restoring the line means restoring all the wayside stations with their pick up goods yards and steam engine with it's one coach....just like preservationists have done. I think we, as train enthusiasts will have to accept that any old lines reopened will have to be very different and likely have few intermediate stations between two large town/city centres, just those stations that can now serve a small town that has grown with extra housing. At the risk of opening myself up for all sorts I think that closure of numerous lines in the 1960's was needed, there were too many lines serving too few people so a rationalisation was needed even though British Railways should have been run as a service rather than as a profit making business. Don't forget that line closures were also going on long before Beeching ever came along. Granted there were many mistakes in the line closures that happened as a result of the Beeching report, the former Great Central Main line would today have been an ideal route for HS2, if I remember rightly, it was built to continental loading gauge so could have served as a freight only route to the Midlands and the North West until some point that it's use could have changed to passenger and freight, you just close the stations. I think it was just a lack of imagination of the future and short term-ism as to what other uses lines and stations could be put to and a lack of advertising that the railway was there for the community, also the rush to get the railway looking like it was making a profit was the biggest mistake. But I find that unsurprising considering the minister concerned at the time Ernest Marples was a pro roads minister and even owned a road building company, Marples Ridgeway, before going into politics. Going back to my very original posting an addition to the future of opening old lines would be opening up the old stations as well to the local communities to use as well...so have play schools there so parents can drop off their kids before going to work....or have shops in some of the old buildings, community centres and also set up local volunteer groups to help look after the stations with small grants.
  6. Well it would appear the future could be bright....the future could well be rail http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-42157853
  7. I don't think there was any mention of Dolau on here but it is still a great advert for the line
  8. I'm hoping this will show a good future for stations and station buildings that have been out of use http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-42085145

  11. Just seen on the BBC news website. So check your bank balance and make sure you have enough saved...failing that warn your bank manager that he may have a heart attack coming when he sees how much money you've spent!!! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-41933997
  12. Caught a quick view of Gatwick Airport station in the film Breaking point that was on Talking pics TV recently. Only a quick shot and not very much of it.
  13. A few screen shots of aircraft from the film Breaking Point that was on Talking pics TV the other week. Principally C-47 Dakota G-AMPZ (crashed in 2010 somewhere in Germany, I don't know if was completely written off) and Airspeed Consul G-AJNE. But with a few other views of aircraft at Gatwick airport in 1961.
  14. Few screen shots from the film Breaking Point that was on Talking pics TV the other week. Apart from the MGA and a Triumph, I don't know any of the other makes...although I think the police car maybe a Humber. Very worried in the scene in London at night that no one appears to have their headlights on...and the Triumph doing an illegal U turn on the A23.
  15. If you have Talking pics TV then this is on early Sunday morning....so you will need to set your recorders!!! Sunday 3.50AM......Breaking Point 1961. The nephew of a printer gets involved with foreign spies intent on making counterfeit money. Stars Peter Reynolds & Dermot Walsh. I caught the end of it the other night and there was a view of Gatwick Airport, including a quick shot of the station in the early 1960's. Several shots of DC 3 Dakota's, Airspeed Consul/Oxford among other British 1960's airliners

  17. Yes I found that site on googling Goldfinch ringing but it seems to be just for the scientist side of things and I couldn't find any reference to particular studies of particular species
  18. Just been scanning through some of my bird photos on my Facebook bird pic album and noticed the Goldfinch that has visited the feeder has a ring on it's leg.... https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10210552064820960&set=a.10209805202789876.1073741884.1326265490&type=3&theater Not sure if this link will work. The ring isn't readable but just wanted to know if it were readable, someone is obviously doing research on the Goldfinches. Is there a website I can go to to report the sighting and the number on the ring if I can find out what number it is??? I had a look at the RSPB website and I've tried google searches but so far come up with nothing useful
  19. I don't know if this has been posted anywhere else...if so then please delete or move http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-birmingham-41801693/clun-castle-steams-again-after-ten-year-restoration
  20. Talking Pictures TV has got numerous mentions on this part of the forum http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/119889-old-films-ive-never-seen/ There are lots of films and series on there that have railways featured in them along with other types of transport, Hovercraft, planes, cars etc etc. Last night they had a short film Today & Everyday featuring railways with a lot of views I hadn't seen before of a very very early days British Railways. I've seen several episodes of Scotland Yard wit railways in them, Rover Done Good...a short that was filmed around Callington in Devon and had a view of what I think are some LSWR gated push pull stock.
  21. Unfortunately I forgot it was on so came in part way through. I will have to record the later one on Saturday...and remember it this time. I've seen bits of Date with Disaster but always come in part way through. Some of the episodes of Scotland Yard are good and several have featured railways in them, I'll have to look at getting that series on DVD when I have some money. Another film to look out for is one called Rover Done Good....filmed around Callington in Devon...it's a short film and again I came in on it part way through but at the end there look to be some views of LSWR gated push pull coaches, or something very similar
  22.
