  1. Made the mistake of watching the James May programme with my 5 year old.  Now she wants me to get that dammed sound vent van!

  2. Shocked how expensive it is getting to build a loco chassis, for a Manor with Markits wheels it’s looking like being over £120 for the parts!  Might have to switch back to Gibson’s...

    1. Captain Kernow

      Captain Kernow

Before you do, Rich, just consider the ease of fitment and relative reliability of the Markits wheels. Will you still be thinking about the cost in 5 years time?

    2. The Fatadder

      The Fatadder

I think a lot will depend on whether I have the motor and gearbox I am thinking of. Money saved there can definitely be invested in the wheels

  3. Silly mistake time....

just painted my net installed double slip without wiring it up first!

  4. Somehow managed to loose the handrail, buffers and nameplates for my Bulldog.  I’ve put them somewhere safe pending the purchase of the final components for the build at Warley, but no idea where!

      The Fatadder

Found it, just a shame it wasted an hours modelling time looking...

on the plus side I found the missing window etch for my DRS 20/3 that I needed at Warley...

  5. Thanks to the fantastic weather I've finally been able to do some spraying, though I think I need to invest in some lighting as I seem to have missed a few bits.....

  6. Trying to resist the temption for a quick build of a J12 sleeper instead of focusing on the Manor kit...

  7. its 150232 that your after.

http://ukrailwaypics.fotopic.net/p1106509.html should give a couple of photos, and there are a few more on fotopic as well

  8. Anyone know what colour the Hall Class / Star Class text on the splasher of unnamed locos should be.  White or yellow/gold?

    1. gwrrob

      gwrrob

White, I have a photo somewhere.

      The Fatadder

Thanks for confirming my expectation, I have a b&w photo of the star Class branding which looked white but wanted to check....

  9. Finally get my PDK 47xx running sweetly without the cylinders fitted, only to find I appear to have lost them.  Very worried they might have fallen in the bin (which was under the shelf where the loco was stored...

Try looking for something else.... mostly works for me! :o

I found it eventually, safe in the corner of the workbench.   Must get the crank pin washers soldered on before I loose it again

  10. I wish I could remember where "somewhere safe" actually is, I keep putting things there and forgetting....

The problem I have is forgetting what it was I was looking for before I find it.

I think this weekend I will need to do a thorough tidy of the railway room/study to try and find it.  The glazing fell out of a voyager I was fitting new lights to (over the past 6 months or so) and was put away somewhere safe until I was ready to reassemble...

My garage is full of all sorts of stuff  " put in a safe place " trouble is I don't seem to have used that place on a regular basis .

My F-I-L was excessively tidy.- In his workshop /shed even the spiders knew their place!

  11. If anyone knows of an original style headlight lens for sale for a current spec Hornby HST please let me know.  just had an ebay purchase arrive with the lens missing, hoping the seller still has the missing part (but want to be prepared)

  12. Looking for a source of Airfix 7ft GWR bogies (given the chance of sourcing the current Hornby Bow Ends is non existent...)

Rich, Airfix B Sets pop up frequently on the Bay and other places like Hatton's pre-owned page. The last lot I bought from Hatton's, for exactly the same reason, were GBP 5 per coach. I've also picked up Bachmann Colletts for not much more than that, to get 9ft bogies.

I've got some spare whitemetal sides if they're any use?

  13. 1 hours work to make 1 pair of masokits screw links. I need at least 8 pairs by Feb 2nd

I use Smiths 3-links more or less 'as they come', Robin and their screw links, albeit I make my own shackles, using an annealed brass lacemakers pin as the basis. I might reduce the size of the hook slightly, if I'm in the mood for it, but for exhibition use, I find that I need a reasonable 'target area' to get the loop of the adjacent coupling over.

    3. sharris

      sharris

I started off with PC Models couplings which look nice and are an appropriate size. Since I ran out I've bought a few Smiths- the Smiths are oversized but at least I can see them. The only thing I wonder about Smiths is that the hooks stick out as far as the buffers and I fear when sprung buffers get compressed I might end up with a locking problem when pushing wagons

    4. The Fatadder

      The Fatadder

I like the smiths 3links / instanters but always found the screw links looked really wrong. Will have a play with these Masokits ones this evening and see how I get on. The only coupling needed witll be between the loco and lead / last wagon as the rest will stay perminantly coupled in the fiddleyard

  14. 1 month until the builders finish my new house, Time to start thinking about how to get the layout to fit (or revise CIMA, oddly I can guess what I am going to work on)

Seems there are a few of us Jon, I know Kempenfelt is doing Strats. I'm on E2 and F2, with Strats to follow in November and (touch wood) T4 in Feb. Will be good to finally get my holiday back!

  15. A sore throat and Carrs Red Lable flux, not a great idea. Only soldered a couple of joints and throat is raw...

Are you using a fume extractor? Not too expensive and makes a big difference...

    3. Mad McCann

      Mad McCann

Open a window if you can. That way hypothermia will get you before the fumes today!

    4. The Fatadder

      The Fatadder

The milk made a huge difference thanks, opening a window isn't really an option. Workshop is the room next to the baby's Nursary and I wouldn't want to risk the Nursary getting too cold

  16. A week working in Sevilla means lots of time to draw up buildings for Brent (hopefully)

  17. After an evening carving handrails off a Ratio toad, I hope a decent rtr model isnt too far away. Do not want to do this again!!!

  18. After being let down by GWR and SWR will Southern get me to the airport

    1. vaughan45

      vaughan45

Will there be any flights when you get there?

If your reliant on Southern things must be bad

  19. Aim for the weekend - get layout legs built

  20. Amazed, today the wifi on the GWR HST to Paddington is actually working! Wonder if Iberia can follow this with something edible en route to Madrid...

    4. The Fatadder

      The Fatadder

Oddly enough the answer to both was no, Iberia ran out of the meat offering leaving cheese and apple pasta. And the GWR wifi had died before the train even reached Swindon...

  21. Amusing site for the day in merc showroom, Cararama 1/76 merc eclass model for

If you think that's amusing, ask them how much a B service will be...

  22. An evenings searching and the county wheels are still mia, no doubt to finally show themselves when I buy replacements. For now a set of P4 45xx wheels are in use as a substitute for mid build testing

I can beat that, I have a Finnney Duke kit somewhere between the UK and australia. 5 weeks so far. was sent insured, but cannot claim for 90 days.

      The Fatadder

      A 3 month wait? That's ridiculous

    3. Craigw

      Craigw

Had me (and John J) a little gob smacked. Almost as much as discovering that tracking apparently stops when it is handed to overseas shipping, but Australia Post do not track either!

  23. An evenings searching and they still can't be found. Think I will use a set of P4 4500 class wheels in the spares box for testing, and fit the OO county wheels when I absolutely have to.

  24. Annoyed once again the postman hasn’t bothered leaving a card to say he had left 3 parcels in the kids playhouse. I could have been working on my TPO

Its usually Yodel or Hermes that play that trick, though they usually consider the wheelie bin a suitable location...

    4. 5 C

      5 C

My postman scribbles something indecipherable on one of your letters which is meant to read "Parcel at number..." or whatever. Have the red cards been abolished as a cost cutting measure?

  25. Another Hornby Hawksworth break compo ordered at a bargain price, (but still don't have the GW thirds I actually need!)
