  1. A few days ago I wrote a little about the number of photos used on this thread and my European thread. As many of you know all the railway photos taken by myself and Dad are catalogued. They are in hard back notebooks (mainly A4) and I've just realised they take up about 3' 6" of shelf space. Then there are the indexes by location and loco type. I also use at least 8 railway atlases of varying scales and periods, as well as road atlases and OS maps. Then there are the sectional appendices for the London Midland, Eastern, North Eastern and Scottish Regions, together with other useful bits of BR information. I also have a number of working timetables but hardly any of them cover the period when BR 4 character headcodes were in use. For the preserved photos I use at least seven different editions of Railways Restored and its predecessors, dating back to 1974. For BR and privatised stock I have quite a large collection of books I use. So why do so many of my captions need amending? Simple answer - I am human. Dad and I didn't always write down the correct location (or date for that matter). As for identifying dmu and emu classes - that can be very difficult, but I don't know why. So please keep the corrections coming. The more photos I post the more sympathy I have for those who try to write captions for photos in books. It is so easy to get them wrong. Edit - Having written that I managed to get the train captioned incorrectly in the first of today's photos. Now (at last) the rest of today's photos. Once again we visit Church Lane crossing on the Great Eastern, with one photo taken near Kelvedon. 12. As it's very close to the end of the year I thought a few statistics might not come amiss today. According to my records this thread has about 6620 photos in it, most of them are scans from old slides. My European thread has about 1550 photos in it. So that makes about 8170 photos so far So about 8,000 slide scans (I think a slight overestimate) and 170+ digital images. In all I have around 40,000 scans of railway slides of mine and Dad's, with a few taken by Mum as well. I use, on the two threads, just under 4,000 scans a year. So in theory the two threads can continue for about 8 more years - but the european scans will run out well before then. So the British one might go on longer - if I have the will to keep on posting them. However I have now used up almost all the 1950s photos and only have a few hundred 1960s photos left. I haven't tried to count the 1970s images, but they are gradually being used up too. So as time passes I will be posting more photos from the 1980s onwards. The slide scans finally end around August 2003 - even that is around 13 years ago now, which is when I (and Dad) changed to digital cameras. In terms of the areas the photos cover. I am running very short of GWR photos and don't have too many Southern ones left. To be honest there never were many GWR images because except for 4 years in Manchester I have always lived on the eastern side of the country and for the last 36 years in the north east. Eventually the GER and LTSR photos will also all be used up. Then the focus will more be on the midlands northwards, with a lot from the north east and parts of the north west. One other point, from time to time on weekdays I will have to start to post preserved railway images as I have a lot of those which will not be used up if I only post them on Sundays. To anyone who asks for more photos each day - sorry but NO. At times it is hard enough getting 10 ready a day for the two threads (5 for each), even though I try to work about a week in hand. I hope this is useful. Of course you may all get bored and ask me to stop posting the images! Now for today with photos from more trips to Swayfield. 14. As ity is very close to the end of the year I checked the number of my photos in this thread today, it is about 1500 so far. 15. Paul, Many thanks for the information. It's one of Dad's photos, I've no idea where he got the information from. Once again I was in Manchester at the time. David
  16. At the Tanfield Railway even the bits of platforms passengers use are grass at two stations. C1527. The ballast seems to have been a pale browny grey from one of the other photos I took that day. From time to time photos do have colour problems. At one time I kept them in some slide boxes sold by Boots which had a smoky grey clear plastic lid. They were kept stacked on top of each other but the slides near the ends of the boxes received a lot of light over the years and suffered a lot of colour change. In some cases the top half of the slide had become bright orange. David
  17. It doesn't surprise me at all that I've got them wrong (again). I thought they probably were wrong when I posted them but wasn't sure what they really were either. Captions now amended. David.
