  1. She was shopping at the time. I wonder why it didn't last? David
  2. It was probably taken in the late morning, but it was a very long time ago, so I'm not sure. If anyone would like to work out the time from the shadows...... For ten years I didn't even notice the train in the background, it only got moved from the "general" slide boxes to the railway boxes in August 1981, when it was re catalogued. David
  3. I was happily typing a note about today's photos all being Great Western when I remembered that one isn't. So today we have four on the Great western and one on the Southern (LSWR to be exact). The first one is the Southern photo. Heddon Mill is on the LSWR line between Barnstaple and Ilfracombe. It's one of Dad's, I have a black and white photo of the same train. It was taken while we were on holiday staying with friends who owned the old cinema in Appledore and had converted part of it into a holiday home. Heddon Mill Swindon dmu Ilfracombe to Exeter Aug 66 J582 Next we have three photos, also of Dad's, taken at Fenny Compton on the GWR line between Banbury and Leamington Spa. 4. Still in Switzerland with a visit to Koblenz this afternoon which can now be reached by train from Eglisau to the west and Turgi to the south. When I was there you could also travel from Stein Säckingen, but that line is now out of use between Laufenberg and Koblenz. There is also the line across the Rhein to Waldshut, in Germany. This explains the DB railbus in one of the photos. 5. Phil, It was indeed the unpredictabilty of what might turn up that made it so enjoyable. When I go out taking photos now I usually know in advance what I will see, I actually take fewer railway photos now even though (in theory) I have more time to go out now I'm retired. David
  6. Thanks Paul. I realised it was wrong after I posted it, so I removed the number from the text beneath the image but RMWeb doesn't allow editing of the original uploaded image title.. David
  7. Before I post today's photos can I once again thank those who point out my captioning errors. If the location or date look odd they are probably my typing errors, as are most loco classes (except dmus). Now and then I type up for down and vice versa. If all the images I post have file numbers which are close to each other then the date should the same for each of them, or at least very near. Train workings are another matter, to those who regularly add information of train identifications and timings thanks very much. Younger followers of this thread may not always realise just how little information was available to most enthusiasts when these photos were taken. Obviously in pre-internet days there was no Real Time Trains site. Working timetables were almost impossible to obtain, especially current ones so working out which train was which was often difficult. It was even hard to obtain details of most special workings. As you know, most of Dad's and my photos were taken by the lineside, not at stations. We usually had a copy of the latest public timetable and tried to work out the likely passing times for our location from the station times. Of course if you got it wrong, or trains were out of sequence then you noted everything incorrectly. Even headcode details were hard to obtain, Ian Allan did do an abc of 4 figure headcodes, but in practice it only gave the first two digits - train class and destination area. In other words you generally went out, found a nice location and took photos of whatever turned up. Now for the photos. Today we have photos from visits to Pilmoor in four different years. 9. Paul, Many thanks for the dmu identification - I am always wary of putting class numbers on 116s and others as they look so similar to me - I never really saw enough to get used to them. The 312s were built from 1975 to 1978, the 313s from 1976 to 1977. (Platform 5 Locos and coaching stock book). So I think the 312s would have been in service first. David
  10. I hope that I've got "up" and "down" the right was round today. The photos for today are from a set I took at Brookman's Park on a very dull day in March 1977, so I think it was quite mild - it must have been as I was there for some time. 11. When you travel from Filisur to Davos Platz and then on to Klosters on the Rhätische Bahn you pass through several stations on the way with Davos as a part of their name. Today's photos show some of these stations, with the images taken from the train. I always liked windows which open fully on trains, they made photography much easier. 17. Thanks Jonathan. Once again it's my useless typing, Dad had it right. David
  18. Many thanks. for pointing that out. I have amended the caption to Hawthorn Leslie. It is in fact Hawthorn Leslie 3793, built in 1953. It was bought from the CEGB, having worked at Newport Gwent. At the time of the photo it was owned by Steam Enterprises Limited who stored their locos at Carnforth. It's surprising the details I can find when I actually get out my reference books - in this case a copy of the ARPS year book "Steam '77". David
  19. Something of a mixture of photos from various Midland Railway locations today. Some with trains, some very much without. Once again the only information I have about the first 4 is in the captions which are taken from Dad's slide catalogue. 20. Photos from the Seetalbahn today. It runs from Emmenbrücke to Lenzburg. At Emmenbrücke trains from Luzern had to reverse at this time to gain access to the Seetalbahn, which ran alongside the road for much of its length. The remainimng photos were taken at Hochdorf, part of the way along the line. 21. It's about time we had another look at Steamtown, Carnforth in the 1970s. For some reason the weather was usually dull when I went there. From time to time I tried taking photos of locos in the shed, with somewhat mixed results. 22. I didn't record the train details but it was en route for Basel before heading for Russia, the photo was taken at 16.32 and it was a Saturday. Unfortunately I no longer have the 1988 SBB timetable book. David
  23. It was closed then. I thought I could quote the dates but couldn't remember them so I have looked up the information in John Gough's "The Midland Railway - A Chronology". He states: Butterley station opened to passengers and goods traffic 1st May 1875 Name changed to Butterley for Ripley and Swanwick 29th July 1935 Closed to passengers 16th June 1947 Closed to goods 2nd November 1964 Excursion trains continued to serve Butterley until after 1964 Station signal box closed 7th March 1965 Crich Junction to Swanwick sidings (through Butterley) closed 23rd December 1968 Swanwick sidings to Ironville Junction closed 4th October 1971. It was then used by Adamson Butterley Ltd until 11th June 1979. Midland Railway Trust re opened Hammersmith to Swanwick sidings 22nd August 1981 MRT reopened Swanwick sidings to Codnor Park junction 29th May 1982. The history of the line is quite complicated.
