  1. The second, revised edition of "Rails in the Fells" has a lot of different illustrations. In the Introduction David Jenkinson explains the reasons behind the changes. Some of the text, especially the final chapter, was also rewritten. I used to have copies of both editions but my original one fell to pieces! David
  2. We'll be spending all today around Rugby again. As you may already have noticed I have further information on the dates for these photos, it now appears they were taken in 1952. 3. I've been checking through Dad''s notes and also looking at the rebuild dates for the Royal Scots. It now seems that the Rugby photos from yesterday were probably taken in 1952 rather than 1954, as 46134 was rebuilt in 1953. There seem to be too many new Mk1 coaches for it to be 1951 I have therefore amended the captions. My apologies for misleading anyone. David
  4. Another of Dad's at Stanton Gate, not all that far from Nottingham on the Erewash Valley. Stanton Gate Tallymen c1952 JVol2025 They may well be shunters with tally sticks. Were they the hand held device of the period? David
  5. I think they probably are, some trains with reporting numbers were noted by Dad as specials, I'll have another look in his notes and if so I'll amend the captions. Edit: Yes there are notes of them all being specials written on the back of the prints. David
  6. Harwich - used to have a train ferry.
  7. As promised the first from Volume 2 this evening. Hopefully you'll notice the change in quality of many of the images. I am slightly less certain of many of the dates in this volume, my apologies if any prove to be years out - please do tell me though. I do have notes for almost all the photos giving locations which helps. This evening, and probably tomorrow, we are spending some time at the lineside near Rugby on the LNWR. 8. This afternoon's images are the last from Volume 1. We go from Grantham to Lewes via Loughborough. All being well the first ones from Volume 2 will follow this evening - once they are scanned. 9. David, Thanks for the comment. I believe that 2614 was the Royal Claud. Last night I was looking at some more of Dad's photos and he has some more of 2614 captioned as "The Royal Claud". In all the photos I have it is always very clean (and shiny). I like your comment about Nottingham Victoria, it certainly had "atmosphere". I used to use it on the way to and from school in the late 50s, it always seemed very calm and quiet, it was rarely busy and noisy. I have a lot more photos still to scan and post! David
  10. We'll stay at Cambridge for the evening, but by the end we'll have moved into 1948. Tomorrow we will visit somewhere else. 11. I know that a very long time ago - perhaps 55+ years ago - Dad gave away copies of quite a lot of his prints to other enthusiasts and photographers, especially ones who had been in the Cambridge University Railway Club with him, so that is probably how it eventually got into the Stanier Mogul Fund collection. Please will you credit it to "John Ford". David

  13. There are around 150 images of Morpeth station back in 1985/6 when I built a model of it. If anyone is interested have a look at my Northumbrian Railway Archive and select the set "Morpeth station infrastructure". I haven't put the direct link to the set in as you might not appreciate such a long slide show in this post! http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidwf2009/collections/72157626192203459/ As an aside I've always thought that there is one book (or series) missing from published railway literature: "Views of every station in Britain". Similarly every signal box ... and so on. I know when I am sorting out my images there are many times when a full online set of reference images would be useful. I sometimes spend hours on the web looking for specific views! David
  14. Glamis Road - no, no memory of anything Dad said - but there might be some more photos in the next 6 albums. Dad had just come out of the army than and wasn't too well so he may have had friends there - and I never asked him about photo details when he was still around - thank goodness the majority are catalogued. David
  15. Some for the evening. This time they are all from Cambridge. As far as I know they were all taken in 1947, probably in the autumn. I could be corrected of course...... 16. Thanks for the suggestions. Again places I ought to know as I used to live in Nottingham almost 50 years ago and cycled past Perry Road most days - it was less than a mile from where I lived. I'd forgotten the amount of rock (Bunter sandstone I think) in the cuttings on the GC (and bits of the GN). As for the B7 you could well be right, if it is from a house it must have been a friend of Dad's as his parents lived quite near there and if he was in Nottingham he'd be staying with them. David. Edited to remove a superfluous word
  17. Some for this afternoon. A few each from Cambridge, Kettering and Nottingham plus one which will never have an identified location - I hope that's not famous last words!. 18. Many thanks, I'd forgotten there were some of those around Nottingham at the time. I seem to remember they were not well liked in Nottingham. I think you are right about that, the loco must have been repainted not long before renumbering and hence just a patch painted which shows up. I suspect most locos would have been renumbered in that way - I bet they would have just used vinyls now!. David
  19. It is a down train, I simply typed the wrong word, once again. Many thanks. I ought to know as I used the station often enough when I was young in the fifties and sixties. David
  20. Sorry, only one new set for today as I've had to do some "other things". Today we visit the Cambridge area again, also the Nottingham and Loughborough areas with a quick trip to York. These images do not seem to be fully described in Dad's notes, I think the locations are correct, I'm actually more certain about the dates. As always further information is welcome. I now need to scan some more prints before tomorrow! 21. Thanks once again, I've already changed the number once as Dad's notes have several versions! 67774 seems to have been 34E in 1950. But if it isn't 24 then judging by the number shape it must be 67774, so I'll put that for now. David

  23. This afternoon's photos are a mix of Great Central, Liverpool and one at Kings Cross. Just for a change there are no freight trains and some photos are taken from a train. In this photo it appears to be numbered E1057. It is known a number of locos around this number carried the E prefix for a short time. Kings X shed L1 and V2 c1948 JVol1317 Once again there should be some more this evening. David
  24. Thanks Andy. I did wonder about it when I saw Dad's notes. I've altered the caption. David
