  1. I managed to find the answer to this through a bit of web searching. I found an image of the David Andrews U class etch that had been reduced to 3mm. On that i could just pick out the front washout plug that was a mystery and then work out where it was on the front ring of the barrel. I have now drilled all of the washout plugs, and handrails on the boiler. I fretted out the deflectors last night and now need to finish filling them and then drilling them for the handrails and hand hold before adding the beading. The next step is to drill the running boards with locations for the feedwater pipes and to fit the boiler and firebox onto the running plate. After 2 years of not managing to do alot for all sorts of reasons, I am finally starting to make progress again on this ancient U (not that there is much left). I have taken photos and will resurect my U class thread later
  2. Hi Guys, Well, after over 2 years of no modelling I have finally started again on my former 1961 vintage Wills U class kit. I am modelling 31618 as it was in 1961. I have filled and marked the firebox washout plugs which were easy. 31618 in common with many other Us gained 4 additional washout plugs on the front section of the boiler barrel. The rearmost 2 are more obvious http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnneave/408552179/in/faves-29644579@N07/ (as seen in Barry) . From a side on view these rear ones are just about in line with the top of the splashers. The other 2 are forward of this and set nearer to the centre line of the barrel. My problem is I can't find a drawing which shows the location clearly. Can anyone tell me how far along that section of the barrel each of the 2 sets of plugs are and how far from the center line they are? Many thanks in advance for your help Duncan
  3. Wow, that is stunning, that is going to be quite some model when finished.
  4. I know DJH kits are expensive but this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320932554627 really is maddness - buy second hand for nearly 200 or have a brand new one with wheels, motor and gear box direct from DJH for £30 less. Why do people think that some of these basic kits are worth such silly money?
  5. And someone is even bidding on it?
  6. Thanks for the kind comment on Hassendean, There was also 1 at Riccarton of a B1 and a shot of the shed at Hawick. http://www.flickr.com/photos/29644579@N07/7147558581/in/set-72157629611859440 http://www.flickr.com/photos/29644579@N07/7147564463/in/set-72157629611859440 I will get round to scanning more as time goes by and I get through the unidentifieds! kind regards Duncan
  7. While doing some research I came accross this page of information on West Moors which has alot of information relevant to just that station http://booty.org.uk/booty.weather/musings/West_Moors_historical_general.htm does anyone know of any pages like this looking at other stations on the line.
  8. Hi Mark, That will be the beastie, lovley to see Highland locos being modelled and so well, its sadly so rare. I look forward to seeing more of what is to come! Kind regards Duncan
  9. Wow a Clan Goods, sadly you don't see them modelled very often , your layout is stunning and at Warley it was one of the few I could stand for hours and watch. Are we going to see more steam appearing - say a Cumming class 73?
  10. Happiness is a J72 - sureley one of the nicest small engines to work on

    1. Captain Kernow

      Captain Kernow

I agree, they are a most pleasing small loco, I like 'em so much I've put one of mine in NCB livery! ;-))

  12. Had a great Sturday, shunted Bridgnorth and then Bewdley with 4566 for 3 hours with most stock moved to form the goods train for this weekends gala.

  13. Sometimes the images in Scran can also be found on Scotlandsplaces - however it seams not in this case.
  14. Morning All, While browsing I found this one on photobucket of the approach to St Boswells. I have never seen anything like this view that shows more of the buildings. http://s282.photobucket.com/albums/kk247/moretwaddle/2012/february%20shop/scotland%20feb%2011/?action=view&current=14.jpg kind regards Duncan
  15. Thanks Dave, I was begining to think from the original that's as it was and this confirms it. Duncan
  16. Thinking about doing valve gear for this engine, the GA gives alot of the details. The one thing you can't see is the motion support bracket, which I would assume was at the ends of the slide bars with extension pieces to then support the expansion links?
  17. This is coming along really nicely and the revised washouts look the part
  18. Hi Nick, I have realised the reason why, and that's for some reason most of the S&D trust galleries are hidden away in the members only section and looking at that image it is in that section sadly. However most of the images in there have come from other sources rather than the trust, so in relation to 3211 I have spoken with the copyright owner and will be able to post it. Some pure S&D machines to come this weekend. kind regards Duncan
  19. I was lucky to get most of his collection a few years ago, in all there are about 120 shots, mainly of 1Ps on the branch, oddly for someone who went on to be a S&T engineer of some repute there were none of signalling on the line. In terms of other shots try these via the main S&D trust website The first is of 3464 at West Pennard in 1942 http://www.sdrt.org....f36f631bae146b5 43228 is seen at Burnham on Sea with its BR number in the LMS style of numbering http://www.sdrt.org....c37db64a07d0c45 Number 63 is seen at Everchreech http://www.sdrt.org....c37db64a07d0c45 43194 seen near Cole http://www.sdrt.org....c37db64a07d0c45 3211 seen near Cole http://www.sdrt.org....f36f631bae146b5 43248 seen at Glastonbury http://www.sdrt.org....f36f631bae146b5 43484 seen piloting a train at Binegar http://www.sdrt.org....ff36f631bae146b There are various ones on Flickr as well, 43419 near Glastonbury http://www.flickr.com/photos/phil-seaford/6577843775/in/pool-451177@N22. 43436 at Highbridge in 1959 http://www.flickr.com/photos/thanoz/6272436297/sizes/l/in/pool-451177@N22/ 43428 at Templecombe http://www.flickr.com/photos/thanoz/5085440289/in/pool-451177@N22 43216 at Highbridge in 1961 http://www.flickr.com/photos/phil-seaford/4927224719/in/pool-451177@N22 43682 at Highbridge http://www.flickr.com/photos/phil-seaford/4927225577/in/pool-451177@N22
  20. Hi Nick, No I've not found a way of getting a table in without it going completley wrong. In terms of 43792 - I have not yet looked at the non S&D locos which were normally either Dubbs or Derby builds, but will see what I can find this evening. With regard to photos in my personal collection a quick check last night showed I have all except 3198 and 3260 - however I need to check my ealier (non published photos) to see if I have either of those. I will also do a summary of liveries in those. The photos all come from the young lad who helped Charlie King to shunt Highbridge in 1953 for Ivo's shot of the 1P's (He also took one of that spread as well) All his photos are from 1948 to 1953 when he appears to have moved away possibly to start his training as a signal engineer at Swindon. Kind regards Duncan
  21. Dear all, I thought this table showing all of the former S&D 3fs might be useful. I will do a separate one showing the tenders allocated to non S&D locos as at the begining of Jan 1956. With thanks to Russ Garner for the information on the as built condition and BR/ Ivo Peters for 1st Jan 1956 3f.pdf Photos of some of them will follow, probably at the weekend. kind regards Duncan
  22. Sadly I do not have any rear shots of 3fs in my personal collection that show the rear of the tender all stopping short of the end, but I do have pleantly of smokebox first shots. There have been various comments about 3fs with tender vents for which I offer the following The first is 43792 seen at Highbridge in November 1950 having just returned from Bristol for repairs. The second Is of 43201 seen at Highbridge in June 1953 and the last may show another with tender vents, but I am not sure and can't read the number However the location and date are unusual showing a train from Burnham in 1950 approaching Highbridge for Templecombe with LSWR stock. If its of interest I will post a couple of the pure S&D ones. Kind regards Duncan
  23. It looks like the feedback left for you was in breach of the feedback rules, you could certainly get it removed and him given a warning
  24. You could really be fooled that the valve gear does not work, you always work to such a great standard and I find it really inspirational. i'm looking forward to seeing the remainder of this build.
  25. Very nice and brave to bash those already lovley models, and with such good results. What is next, maybe a Fowler 2-6-4 chassis converted to a Fowler or Stanier 2-6-2t chassis?
