  1. Watching the covering of HM Queen's funeral, I noted one comment that the coffin of King George VI was conveyed from London to Windsor by train.

Just as well that was not planned for yesterday, then - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-62952485

I feel very sorry for those who's journeys were disrupted or even thwarted.

Of course, only the coffins of British monarchs since Victoria have actually travelled to their last resting place by train. Most travelled by "road" before there were any railways.

Mike - could a top & tailed (very short) Royal Train not run direct from the DML onto the Windsor branch and be accommodated at Windsor?

I take the point about the road journey being easier for the Long Walk, though.

      Morning Cap'n,

The train had to go to a specific line at Windsor in order to transfer the coffin.  I'm not sure if what is on the other side of where the transfer would take pace would still be accessible and if there's room to re-lay the line in question.  You also need somewhere to put the second train (yes, the plan involved two trains) and even back along that required some track to be laid to deal with them.  Top & tail wouldn't be a problem at all but it's a matter of gaining access to the right part of the station and that might no longer be possible.  the other problem is that the route available for the public to see the cortege would be very short (from either station) which would lead to crowd control problems.  I suspect that rail to windsor was taken out of the plan a good while back?
