  1. Which is why “class 31” saves all the confusion, they all became 31s at any rate, so why complicate what was supposed to be something was there to make thwir identification simpler for those who aren’t conversant with pre TOPS numbers...
  2. good morning Woudl anyone happen to have any dates for when the Class 47s took over from the Class 40s on the Liverpool St to norwich services. i believe it was 1965??? but has anyone a proper date?
  3. You probably won't thank me for this, but the coverage of Stratford and Temple Mills has omitted the short-lived EWS servicing depot that was erected at Temple Mills around the turn of the present century. It was before the present Eurostar depot was established and - from memory - was further to the north of the then new Orient Way, on what is now the end of the carriage sidings and waste land/parking area. As a survey of BRs depots, it was outside the scope of the bookazine to include it.
  4. Out of interest which article have you enjoyed the most, in what mags and when? The Harry friend articles in TRACTION’s early issues are held in high regard by many... I certainly enjoyed them Michael Rhodes articles in RAIL in the late 1980s and early 1990s were extremely informative and well photographed, sometimes with a grey diagram which was also really good. What are other people’s favs....?
  5. I could imagine that Mainline managers genuinely believed that they would keep the contract and they tried to offer a good price, but wouldn't be surprised if DRS themselves were more expensive but ultimately as an issue of direct control, they wouldn't have minded the cost
  6. to be fair to Mainline, the contract was more a case of DRS wishing to have "Direct" control over it rather than a privatised third party...…
  7. Morning, forgive a qustion out of nothing more than sheer interest, but just wondered who and when can last guard claim to have worked a train with a brake van with a working stove, (and not a shark ballast van there to merely plough - but a bonafied tail end charlie with a stove smoking away. Read the excellent "Derby Train man" and he writes of his time on the Denby to Willingtons with a working stove in the late 1980s, I'd guess sometime arounf 1989 would have been the last such time?
  8. Morning, would anyone happen to have a list of the numbers that the shunters at Alexandra Docks had attatched to their fronts? Looking at a pic with the numbers, 93, 55 and 56 on the fron of the locos, naturally these are "target" numbers, but has anyone any more info about what each one was/did?

  12. After four years I thought I'd edit the mis-splat title...........
  13. So is it a book or a magazine?
  14. Hi Gary, "a miss" for not including the loco number in a caption? if the number isn't known to the writer, unless it legible in the pic, it leaves a writer a little stumped..? seems a trivial reason not to buy an otherwise well researched piece of work?
