      It finally tipped the balance towards AWS. We simply don't know how many times that has saved the day since.

      But you've got to hand it to the enginemen of old, driving at speed in appalling conditions, looking out for flickering oil signal lamps in all weathers, with no other help but their wits and experience.

       

      Nerves of steel.

      Yes indeed. With TPWS the bean counters can see, via data recorders, exactly how much that safety device has saved. Not so with AWS. Lewisham's and Harrow's are no longer in the equation yes but there is no way of knowing exactly what AWS has done for us other than make the railway generally much safer.

       

      Having been in the cab in the dark in fog at very high speed the nerves of steel are still required. A bell and a flash of a green light every thirty seconds or so then has to be supplemented by those nerses of steel, wits and experience.
