I am sorry to report the death of Chris Young, a long-standing member of Bentley MRG and our current Chairman.
Chris and I were at school together so we go back a long way. It is the Bentley Grammar School which gives its name to our club as that is where the founder members met in the 1970s.
Chris was an active member of the club until very recently. Those of you who attended the Calne Show in January or Trainwest in April will probably remember his cheerful presence on the door, in the car park, or just generally helping out.
It was behind the scenes where Chris really made his presence felt. When the club was facing the loss of its premises three years ago, Chris was instrumental in helping to raise more than £100,000 to buy our new clubrooms. We owe him a lot, in more ways than one.
It was at Trainwest in April that Chris first showed signs of the cancer that was to claim his life. The diagnosis was confirmed in July when he was given six months to live. He responded to the news by buying a Tesla Model X. That was Chris - live life to the full.
He had hoped to make it to the Calne Show in January where no doubt he would have been giving people rides around the car park in the Tesla. Sadly that was not to be. He died in the Royal United Hospital, Bath, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The funeral will take place at the West Wiltshire Crematorium, Semington, next Thursday 8th November at 3.15pm.
Donations in memory of Chris can be made to MacMillan Cancer Support www.macmillan.org.uk or to the RUH Cancer Centre www.foreverfriendsappeal.org.uk/ruhcancercentre.
