  1. Sometimes referred to as an "Air motor". It looks to be in a different position to the position used on AC locomotives.
  2. The innards themselves are available for a few quid from eBay. I'm currently playing with one using just water and it'd look quite good for drain cocks and safety valves but would need VG for smoke, which would eventually mean a residue over everything. The white stick sucks up the fluid and the whole lot is definitely small enough for a 4mm scale smokebox. It also reacts very quickly when turned on and off. Definitely better than the smoke in my R392 County of Bedford....

    Formula 1 2023

Williams need no longer worry when they are going to score their first point this season.
  4. My claim to fame is I once tried to talk to Lisa Rogers in a nightclub in Newcastle. The Megalomaniacs went into business and undertook fabrication for my employers for a while, my Dad knew Kosher from previous work anyway and I was in the same car club as Daz- I haven't seen him for a few years tho and unfortunately Nosher passed away about five years ago. I recently saw the expert "Hadrian" in his day job as a landlord of an industrial estate on Richard Hammond's new car restoration program.
  5. The "coasting" technique is used for electric traction through engineering possessions and can be several miles long. I'm not sure how far it has progressed due to bi-mode traction but there was a plan to dewire emergency crossovers and use the same technique. I've never known a Tesla lock it's brakes on, you get enough of a warning and the separate 12v keeps the car alive. It might be possible in the event of a terminal failure, but that's what usually happens to Jaguars and Land Rover cars.
  6. Mamod SL1 set, for about £30 at a swapmeet in 1988 when I was a teenager and it was still alot of pocket money. I probably would have found out that they are dire and I've since scratched that garden railway itch with an Edrig. I can't say I'm too bothered about anything recently, if I've wanted something I've built it myself. It just takes longer...
  7. NMRA Spring meet at Mech Models in Staffordshire is listed on the website along with others: https://www.nmrabr.org.uk/ ...Hence the importance for exhibitions to list info for visiting layouts on their websites or press releases, unfortunately I can't get to every show that I'd like to so prefer to support those that showcase my preferred modelling regions and genres. My Hershey sugar mill layout "Central Alonzo" (it's 1950s Cuba so is basically an American 1920s Railroad with diesels) will be at the Nottingham show on the 4th-5th November at a new venue on the east side of the city so will be convenient for travel from Lincoln.
  8. Several ex Virgin and Gatex coaches were exported in 2008: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_British_Rail_Mark_2_carriage
  9. There was a down run a couple of years ago that could have beaten the time, had it not been for a 50mph restriction at Carstairs.
  10. Converse to the general reason for this thread, perhaps it's best if some shows don't advertise which layouts will be there- if it's only going to be full of the same old layouts in indifferent quality or improbable whimsies. This may sound churlish but if I'm going to be attending more than the median of two shows per year despite work and family priorities then I have reason to be choosy. It seems the term "exhibition layout" is still as vague as ever, and merely implies that a layout has been exhibited. Those closest thing to any kind of standard is having the top of the backscene at elbow height!
  11. The Railway and Modellers Junction? I had to look that one up, and can't ever remember going in there. There was also one at the top of Newtown Rd/Park Rd in the late 1980s, and previously alot of my pocket money was spent at Pollard's, £2.50 for a Peco turnout and £14.95 for an Airfix 14xx, what's year that was. Anyway, going back to Thunderbolt Models, Saturday is free Coffee morning, 10am-12pm.
  12. Stafford definitely leads the way here amongst the large Midlands exhibitions, and though I'd accept a previous point that not everyone may have professional looking photos or know what one was, it's definitely the best way to advertise a show.
  13. Thanks for the link, the centre point coupling looks like it would be ideal.
  14. I'm currently revisiting a long term project to model the Soller Railway in 1:100 scale (previous photos were lost on the RMweb server crash) and was wondering if there is an alternative to the Peco GR-102 with a longer coupling swing? I thought initial running trials were fine but having seen Bemo stock operating on a layout at the weekend I realised there was room to mount the pocket further to allow for better lateral movement. I could draw and print some to try, but before I do was wondering what else might be available...?
  15. With controllers that go up to eleven...
  16. Is the wheel diameter slightly underscale anyway if you need 23mm over the flanges, as I recall the 79" of the prototype is 23mm anyway? One solution might be Hornby Q1 wheels or Romford equivalent, but at 5'1" (~20mm) these may be too small.
  17. I was able to take some last minute time off from work so was only there as a punter instead of with a layout, but thought it was a very good show and well worth the trip. I enjoyed the layouts (including the non-US one) but wasn't able to find any of the freight cars on my wanted list, but couldn't resist one of Gilbert's Cabooses. I'm now busy working out the differences between it and a 1300 series for when I finally get round to building my own kit.
  18. Not a steam loco but holding honourary status must be GWR Railcar No.20 at the KESR, having arrived by rail and not left since. It's restoration is progressing with a planned completion date for next year. https://kesr.org.uk/donate/gwr-railcar/
  19. The London-Glasgow/Edinburgh trains largely used to start from Birmingham, and were a continuation of those from London so were booked to run throughout. Which means due to staggering round the West Midlands, it is quicker to get from Wigan to London than Wigan-Coventry, both using direct trains. Quite how the West Coast operator will play the timetable is anyone's guess once HS2 opens, I used to get asked this alot because there was little perceived benefit from travelling up to Birmingham Airport for HS2 when the current Cov-Eus non stop times are about an hour and have been for nearly 50 years. They won't necessarily be longer because something Avanti cottoned onto after going to a 15 minute Birmingham -Euston during the morning peak is there are advantages in one train doing New St-Eus only and the next starting at International and only calling at Coventry, so they just might not be as frequent.
  20. A club sales stand might offer a selling service if pre-arranged* and for a % commission. (*Turning up with a big box of uncatalogued stuff five minutes after opening on the Saturday morning probably won't get the best service) Some NMRA events (including the winter meet this Saturday in Stokenchurch, one mile from the M40) offer space for member sales, usually £10 for a 6' table, in addition to the entrance fee. Mostly North American outline of course but not exclusively, and it doesn't seem to affect the number of traders who want to attend- if anything they benefit from the pickings afterwards. It does mean that you have to stay at your table for most of the show tho...
  21. ...and is there any brown-out provision on the stock sound decoder? Don't get me wrong, I think stay alives are a fantastic provision to have, so much so that if I'm fitting them as standard then they might as well be included as standard. Can we have a Beatrice in original/as preserved green? I've shown a photo of the red Beatrice to 9yr old Beatrice here and she doesn't like being a dirty red colliery engine...
  22. On reflection, there's probably more yellow on the front of Belgian 90128 there than a Grand Central HST...
  23. I'm amazed by the response to exhibition attendance, having thought that my work and family commitments would put me low down but it seems it's actually another thing that I'm better than average at. Perhaps it's because regular exhibition attendees are too busy at then to fill in the poll, aren't reflected in the responses, or because RMweb users get their full from looking at modelling here and don't feel the need to attend? Curious.
  24. That was the first aircraft I flew in, aged 8. A pleasure flight from Sywell. I sat at the back.
