  1. Last day to order Discounted Advance Tickets. https://www.gordon-craig.co.uk/cmra-model-railway-exhibition-i2098/ Although there is no early admission, those holding advance tickets will be directed to the ground floor entrance - the level of the exhibition halls - thus avoiding any queues for the box office on the first floor.
  2. Added two more layouts to those expected to attend in initial post: El Cremallera by Piers Milne - Spanish metre gauge rack railway in 1:160 scale 6.5mm gauge (Continental Nm) Wilstone by Geoff Evans - Small narrow gauge through station in 7mm/ft scale 16.5mm gauge (0-16.5) Unfortunately Layouts4u are unable to attend however their space has been ably filled by a new member of the trade Mount Tabor Models. Full updated list of trade, demonstrators and supporting organisations can be found on the CMRA website: http://www.cmra.org.uk/exhibition.html
  3. Only four days left to get your Discounted Advance tickets. https://www.gordon-craig.co.uk/cmra-model-railway-exhibition-i2098/
  4. Hi Christopher, I agree given that the prototype wasn't metre gauge - a more accurate "shorthand" designation would possibly be "S-16.5" as in 0-16.5, 00-9 etc. or even maybe Sn3.5 However the builders of the layout in all their publicity and website at http://www.mscmaasenwaal.nl/koningswaal.html have given it the "Sm" designation. Maybe something to discuss with them at the show?
  5. I have been asked to publicise the discounted Advance Tickets. There is as option to purchase discounted advance tickets from the venue box office either in person, via phone or by the box office website: https://www.gordon-craig.co.uk/cmra-model-railway-exhibition-i2098/ Discounted Advance Adult tickets are £8 This gives a discount of £2 on the "on the door" price of £10. There is no booking fee for tickets purchased however there is a £1 fee per transaction to cover postage etc should you wish for the ticket(s) to be mailed out to you. Even if only purchasing a single ticket and requesting it is posted there is a saving of a £1. Although there is no early admission for advance ticket holders, those holding advance tickets will be directed to the ground floor entrance - the level of the exhibition halls - thus avoiding any queues for the box office on the first floor. Closing date for the discounted Advance Tickets is the 7th January 2019. Note: For any local visitors who live in postcode areas SG1 and SG2 there is a further discount of £1 making Advance Adult tickets only £7. This price is only available for those visiting the venue box office in person or purchasing by phone - not online. The same closing date of 7th January applies. To help speed up admissions on the day the Box office will have the facility to take contactless card payments subject to the normal £30 limit.

Sunday 13th January 2019 - 10am till 4.30pm. Organised by the Chiltern Model Railway Association (CMRA). There will be more than thirty superb working model railway layouts with a well balanced coverage of scales, gauges and prototypes. An excellent selection of specialist and general trades will be present together with demonstrations, static exhibits and society stands. The venue is situated only a couple of hundred yards from Stevenage's main shopping area and offers a town centre location with the benefits of good transport links and car parking. For those coming by public transport the railway station is literally just over the road and is joined to the venue and town centre by a pedestrian bridge. Services are mainly operated by Great Northern, lying on the route from London King's Cross to Peterborough & Cambridge. The station is also served by trains between London and Letchworth via Hertford North. The bus station is also close, less than a minutes walk away. For those travelling by car the venue is on the dual carriageway A602 which is easily accessed by two junctions on the A1(M), one from the north and one from the south, with an estimated 5 minute travelling time from the motorway. Several large car parks are adjacent to the Arts & Leisure Centre. Please note parking in the Leisure Park car park is reserved for Leisure Park customers as opposed to Leisure Centre customers. Parking there and visiting the exhibition may result in visitors incurring a parking charge of £100. On the door Admission charge is £10 per Adult. Up to two children, aged 5 to 15 will be admitted FREE with each paying adult. Special Advanced Ticket Offer - £8 per Adult - £2 off each Adult ticket if purchased in advance on or before 7th January 2019. Further details about the exhibition including layouts, trade, demonstrators and societies can be found on the CMRA website: http://www.cmra.org.uk/exhibition.html
  9. The Leisure Centre is to the east of the railway station and has several ground level car parks. A little further away are the town's multi-storeys. The rates vary for the car parks shown with the most expensive ones being the two railway station ones - marked as RS and RN. If you wish to keep your car parking charges to a minimum it is best to visit on the Sunday where the rate for all the car parks - except for the railway station ones - is currently £2.00 for all day. Note the one marked P is reserved for exhibitors on the Saturday and Sunday. As warned above the very large car parks to the west of the station - off the plan to the left - are for the Leisure Park, not the Leisure Centre, and although free for users of the Park will attract a PCN with a charge of £100 should you leave your car there and walk over the footbridge to the station and the exhibition venue.

  11. Thank you for all your kind messages, its very much appreciated by the Club and makes it all worthwhile. For the record a couple of Awards were made over the weekend. The Keith Nock Memorial Trophy - the "best in show" as voted for by exhibitors, members of the trade and Uckfield MRC members - was awarded to Foxcote New Pit, the 2mm/ft finescale layout constructed by Jerry Clifford. Runner up was Hinksey Yard in British N by the Epsom & Ewell Model Railway Club. The Best in Show plaque - the "best in show" as voted for by our visiting public - was awarded to The Yard, the 0 & 0-16.5 layout constructed by Martin Coombs and friends. We had joint runners up with Hinksey Yard in British N by the Epsom & Ewell Model Railway Club and the narrow gauge Hobbiton End in 5.5mm scale by Simon Addelsee sharing the honours. For those interested the honours were also shared for the infamous Saturday evening social quiz. Teams from Clevedon and St Blazey/Foxcote New Pit went away with the chocolates. One team scored a perfect score in one of the rounds - note to self, must make it more difficult! A full retrospective has now been uploaded to the Club's website: http://www.uckfieldmrc.co.uk/exhib18nf.html Provisional details for the 35th Uckfield Model Railway Exhibition being held on the 19th & 20th October 2019 have also been uploaded.

  17. Excellent article Simon on the layout in the September 2018 edition of Railway Modeller. Looking forward to seeing it again at Uckfield in October.
  18. The layout features in the Uckfield 2016 retrospective: http://www.uckfieldmrc.co.uk/exhib16/brokencreek.html
  19. I'm slightly concerned that you have mentioned the Alban Arena in the above post as a venue where an organisation has been taking thousands of pounds "out of the hobby". Would you be kind enough to expand on your statement as why you feel that this is the case? It is just that the only organisation I'm aware of that ran model railway exhibitions at that venue - and annually for 30 years - was the Chiltern Model Railway Association (CMRA) which from first hand knowledge I know has put thousands of pounds into the hobby. The CMRA was founded by a small group of local model railway clubs (centred around Hertfordshire, England) back in 1965 to facilitate the avoidance of clashes of exhibition dates, provide a means of communication between the clubs and encourage mutual support. Its aims are best summarised in the key phrase "to encourage and promote the model railway hobby". Since that date the Association has gradually expanded. Now with approximately one hundred and fifty Associate organisations, the Association covers a large portion of the UK. The membership includes a number of national "scale/gauge", company and nationality interest groups. In all, the Association can be said to represent over nine thousand individual modellers. The range of services offered to Associate organisations has expanded over the years and now includes exhibition insurance, loan of exhibition equipment, exhibition diary, layout register, guidelines for running exhibitions, modellers workshops and seminars. The Association also publishes an occasional electronic magazine CaMeRA which is distributed to Associate organisations. Revenue from the St. Alban's show, now relocated to Stevenage with the blessing of the Stevenage & District MRS who are members, was used to purchase equipment such as barriers, mains extension leads, banners etc which are now housed in rented premises up and down the country for Associates to use. Events such as Modeller's workshops and the recent successful Exhibition Forum are also subsidised from revenue from the exhibition - all with the aim of promoting the hobby at large. Guidance documents focusing on topics such as Exhibitions, Young People & Vulnerable Adults, GDPR and Portable Appliance Testing to name but a few have recently been updated/issued. For further details on what the CMRA has to offer can be found at http://www.cmra.org.uk
  20. According to the June edition of Railway Modeller this is a Dakota Dibben promotion.
  21. Many thanks to Alex for inviting Leysdown to the show and the friendly hospitality of the Mickleover Model Railway Group. The team had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend in a wonderfully atmospheric venue - looking forward to returning with Sandford & Banwell sometime in the future.
  22. Looking forward to attending the show with Leysdown. Only ten days till we will be on our way up from not so sunny Sussex.
  23. Had a very pleasant time at the show with Leysdown. Thanks to the Ilford & West Essex Model Railway Club for inviting us.
  24. A layout also appearing but missing from the list is Surrey Arms, a small BR (SR) terminus by Stephen Hannington. More pictures at http://www.uckfieldmrc.co.uk/exhib17/surreyarms.html Yours truly will be a guest operator for the weekend.
