It's not just so the cars can drive straight off. Any excuse to post a Tom Scott video!

One of the strangest things I've seen is the look of horror on an American's face seeing rugby league for the first time. The look of incredulity that people could do that more or less without stopping, without armour and without changing the players every couple of minutes.

Stephenson himself said that in hindsight he would have chosen a gauge "a few inches larger - but only a very few".

The hazards of layout building in Australia
DavidB-AU replied to DavidB-AU's topic in Down-Under Railway Modellers
The wildlife is dangerous to them, not us. Many years ago I visited a crocodile farm in the Northern Territory. The guide said that crocodile meat tastes like whatever they feed them. If they are fed on chicken, the meat tastes like chicken. If they are fed on fish, it tastes like fish. He then said, completely deadpan, "so the wild salties out there taste like American tourist". EDIT: I should clarify for those outside Australia that saltwater crocodiles ("salties") are considerably more aggressive than freshwater crocodiles ("freshies"). -
Prototype for everything corner.

It is a mistake. And don't call me Shirley! And to Leeds International Airport. -
This is almost enough to get me to "defect" to OO9. If only they would do the WDLR Hunslet 4-6-0T, my all time favourite NG loco. Sadly the kit requires an ancient Minitrix Ivatt Class 2.

Another idea is don't build a permanent layout in a room. Build a modular layout using a standard like FREMO with the first half dozen or so modules free standing in the room. You can then build more modules you can swap in and out of the layout so it's not always the same, but also gives you the option of setting up a larger layout in a larger space (e.g. an exhibition).

Alexander Kamyshin is the CEO of Ukrzaliznytsia. Trains returned to Mykolaiv yesterday and the line to Kherson is being restored.

You can justify anything under "see rule 1".

You've previously posted about Scotrail 156s and 158s. I'd point you to literally any Ian Futers layout (in particular Lochside, Newcastle Haymarket and Ullapool) to show you don't need much space for a layout to be visually stimulating and operationally interesting.

I agree 110% with this. Some of those that record directly to a USB stick aren't even stereo, they are dual mono! Get a good quality USB output turntable and use Audacity to record at 320kbps. I would also recommend exporting "archive" versions of of your digitised music at the highest bitrate and in FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) format. From those make your everyday playable MP3s, possibly at a lower bitrate to reduce the file size if necessary. For the record (pun intended!) digital preservation has been my day job for the last 11 years.

How long after the Grouping for Engines to be Repainted?
DavidB-AU replied to a topic in UK Prototype Questions
There was still a fair bit of LSWR livery around in 1926, a couple of ex-GER locos still in wartime grey in 1927 and there was at least one loco still in Caledonian blue in 1930. And then the Caledonian Single 123 was painted back into CR blue in 1935! -

Will both leads be able to access most/all traverser tracks? Ideally you'd want empty and loaded quarry wagons you can cycle through in opposite directions. -
Why do Swedish warships have barcodes? So that when they return to port, they can Scandinavian.

The Railway Children Return. Sequel coming 15 July 2022.
DavidB-AU replied to Paul.Uni's topic in DVD/Video/TV
I finally got around to watching it. The premise was good with some very nice nods to the original story, but I thought the script was a bit weak. The acting was very good. For the railway bits, they did quite a good job with the Jubilee, 4MT and S160 although the Standard Class 2 stood out like a sore thumb! -
At Ronnie Barker's public memorial service at Westminster Abbey. the cross was accompanied by four candles instead of the usual two.

I've been making my own bread for a long time. Not for cost reasons but because I find it enjoyable and get a chance to experiment. My grandfather was a baker and he taught me to make bread the way he was taught as an apprentice in the 1920s. No machine, all done by hand. Here's a dark rye I made a few months ago using liquid malt extract to feed the yeast. The proving and baking process smells like a cross between a bakery and a brewery!
