This technique might work on these. only caveat is I've found it works well on a factory finish but tends to remove your own so need to try sealing the original colour first I was never happy with this and reworked it but I can't find any other photos offhand. The right hand ends gives you the idea though if you imagine that on the darker base.

Albeit you are asking people who have stuck with it! Andy Peters' who's layout was quoted above as an example of what you can do, sold up and moved back to OO. Best advice is to buy a few things to try, perhaps second hand, and you can always sell them on again. Don't sell your favourite OO stuff immediately and you derisk the decision. Ebay generally have low fee weekends so you don't need to pay anything like 12% and clearly a dealer is going to offer less than they think they will get anyway. You are paying them for convenience though and in bulk that may be worth it, especially if you can negotiate some part exchange.

I prefer being able to sell all my surplus stuff easily for a minimal fee without even leaving the house.

I'm not aware of a magic solution. Firstly I'd try cleaning it thoroughly with a soap. Failing that white spirit - but not excessively rubbed. More extreme polish out with T cut or brasso or 2000 grade wet and dry but you'd have to do the whole loco and it will end up shiny. I'd dull it again with weathering personally but I don't leave mine pristine anyway. Ultimately to get a pristine finish, if cleaning doesn't work I suspect you'd have to get it resprayed.

Taekno make a ford D which is 1/43 and a bit more refined than the Dinky. Usually pricey but I picked up a battered one which doesn't matter if you are working on it anyway I did spot a Spanish Leyland Comet from Ixo I'm addition to those above, which could be anglicised. Another source are Steve Beattie resin kits. They vary a bit but I've got a Leyland Terrier to do. Apparently an Ergomatic cab is in development.

Interesting thread. I've amassed far more 1/43 vehicles than I can possibly get round to - particularly mini vans - and a number are similarly half done! As you say with the better quality recent ones, removing the headlights does tend to damage them which is a big drawback. Additionally many have makers badges and being able to replicate them would be welcome. A number of people on here have repainted Ixo Bedford TK lorries and need a new badge!

I have read in several places that the official name of the early red colour was BR Crimson. Carmine was coined later (can't recall if it was an author or a modeller). Anecdotal but Precision call theirs BR Coach Crimson (blood), and Railmatch call theirs crimson. found the quote - "I believe the use of the word "carmine" is down to J N Maskelyne, sometime editor or the Model Railway News" Irrelevant to this thread obviously

Although I think the positioning of the wasp stripes is pretty uniform. Dapols original batch were all shifted up quite a bit and I wasn't even convinced they lined up at the top of the nose of mine - they seemed to change direction to my eyes but it might be an illusion around the rad. They moved them for the short hinge version so I'm hoping we get some long hinge with the corrected wasp stripes this time!
