  1. They were taken from normal service trains Ian. I must have some notes of the day somewhere but not readily to hand. Certainly the down train stopped at Selby which suggests that one may have been a DMU.
  2. Thank you to iands for identifying Balne Low Gates crossing cabin. Can you help with these two please? Still on the NER between Doncaster and York in April 1979. iands tells us that this one is Riccall South, looking south. and this is Brayton, looking north Some I can identify (two of them 'cos they've got name boards on them!). Balne, an LNER(?) design Henwick Hall and Heck
  3. ECML today. Moss, between Doncaster and Selby in April 1979. North Eastern Railway. There were quite a few minor but manned crossings which must have seen very little road traffic. This one is Dormer Green. Barwick and this one where the label has disappeared. Any offers for a name? Edit - Thanks to iands who tells us this is Balne Low Gates
  4. Grange Over Sands, 5 Sept 1979. A BR(LMR) design Shipley Bradford Junction, Midland Railway, 16 Feb 1980 Shipley Bingley Junction, Midland Railway, 16 Feb 1980 Warrington PSB, 6 March 1980 My own photos of Alrewas (see Page 27), LNWR in 1980
  5. More Chester boxes from 1980, No.5 and No.6 By way of contrast, this is the cute little box at Hednesford No.3, also ex LNWR and also in 1980. After closure, going by the broken windows.
  6. Thanks Billy. I'm just left wondering how I got it so wrong (but then it was 40 years ago!).
  7. Is it really? I'll just have to plead insanity and wait for confirmation
  8. Chester for today, in 1980. Mostly of LNWR origin I think No.1 The concensus suggests that I have blundered here and that this box is actually at Hooton - Sorry Folks. Second edit - make that Hooton South. Thanks to all. No.2 Could this/these be No.3? No.3A No.4 Nos.5 and 6 to follow.
  9. Still on the North Stafford, the next box along from Hockley Crossing, towards Uttoxeter station. was Pinfold Crossing. Now replaced by a BR(LMR) design. 1979 and 12 Jan 1980 The last box on this line before Derby PSB is Egginton Junction Going in the opposite direction is Cresswell, seen in 1979 For a complete contrast, Crewe Coal Yard in 1980
  10. Hockley Crossing, Uttoxeter in 1979. North Staffordshire Railway, now re-homed to Blythe Bridge, Caverswall Road on the Foxfield Railway (see my pics on P29). and on 12 Jan 1980
  11. 45034 near Wingfield with the 07.30 Birmingham to Newcastle train on 25 June 1981
  12. Some North Staffordshire Railway boxes, (well, boxes on the NSR line) between Crewe and Derby from 1979. North Stafford Sidings, not far from Crewe South Junction Kidsgrove Central, a BR(LMR) design Bradwell Sidings, between Kidsgrove and Longport Stallington (Blythe Bridge) Tutbury Yard Tutbury Crossing, pre double glazing and Clifton by Ashbourne in 1981. There's a much better colour photo available if you Google 'Clifton (Mayfield) railway station'. The top of this one is now at Consall on the Churnet Valley Railway on a new base
  13. Sounds good to me Jonathan. For those which have been moved and re-named, as well as your designations above, how about a column for the original site e.g. Butterley would have a note that it was originally at Ais Gill or a picture of Ais Gill would have a note that it is now preserved at Butterley. Consall on the Churnet valley Railway would have a note that the top was from Clifton by Ashbourne, mounted on a new base. On second thoughts, a 'Notes' or 'Remarks' column might be sufficient but I could still see a value in some 'standard' comments as in your list. I'll try to include what information I know in my postings.
  14. Scarborough, North Eastern Railway in 1978 and in 1984 Woodhead, 1979 Kearsley Junction, Lancashire and Yorkshire, 9 Sept 1981 Bolton West, L&Y, 9 Sept 1981 Bolton East, L&Y, 9 Sept 1981 and Burnden Junction, Bolton, 9 Sept 1981
  15. More Midland boxes Guiseley Junction, from the road side showing the access staircase at the rear, 14 Nov 1981 Oakham Level Crossing, 31 July 1981 I've come to the conclusion that this one, without any name boards, is (or was at some time) called Nunnery Single Line Junction in Sheffield where the connection from the Midland line at Nunnery Main Line Junction now meets the GC line from Victoria. Not a very good photo taken on a dismal day in 1979 with snow on the ground but the only one I've got
  16. Forget the loco (nice as it is), what are the stories about the wagons in the background? particularly the brake van but the flat wagon as well
  17. Some Midland 'boxes today, all from 1981 Renishaw Park Colliery Sidings. I'm open to correction on the actual name of this one. Foxlow Junction, near Barrow Hill on the 'Old Road' between Chesterfield and Rotherham. Altofts Junction, between Normanton and Castleford Royston Junction, a bit further south. Hellifield South Junction
  18. There's a Station approach in Derby as well. How many 'London Road Junction' signal boxes can you think of? I can immediately think of three within 30 miles of each other.
  19. Two 'boxes on the Fylde lines between Preston and Blackpool which the Pre-Group Atlas says were LNW and L&Y Joint. Blackpool North No.2 in 1980 Kirkham North Junction in 1980 Picton Road Junction, LNWR, lurking somewhere in the Edge Hill area, 1981 Lichfield Trent Valley (Low Level), 1981 These are ex Lancashire and Yorkshire. Collyhurst St, between Manchester Victoria and Miles Platting, 1981 Continuing on the line from Miles Platting towards Stalybridge: Philips Park No.1, 1981 and Park Station, also in 1981
  20. Some LNWR boxes today: Speke Junction, 11 Sept 1980 Hartford Junction, 11 Sept 1980 Coppenhall Junction, 11 Sept 1980 to the BR(LMR) design Cheadle Hulme, 1980 Edgeley Junction No.1 in 1980 showing the opposite side of the box to those photos posted previously and Exchange Sidings, 3 Oct 1980. This was in Birmingham between Grand Junction and St. Andrews Junction
  21. Wrexham to Bidston, Great Central, 11 Sept 1980 Caergwrle Hawarden and Heswall Hills
  22. A big thank you to all those who identified Nailsea and Backwell for me. RMWeb comes up trumps again
  23. Going Black and white for a while folks. There will be more colour ones to come eventually. First four taken on 11 Sept 1980. Green Lane Crossing, GWR, on the Chester to Wrexham line, just over one mile from Saltney Junction. I've worked out that this one must have been Gresford Colliey Wrexham Exchange on the Great Central Line and Wrexham North on the GWR side This last photo' is not one of mine but one found at a swapmeet some time. It is not marked to say where it is or who took it so, for now, it is just part of my 'collection'. Can anyone tell me where it is please?, the best I can make out on the print l have is what looks like 'BA' just right of centre on the somewhat shabby name board
  24. Hadn't thought of that one. I like the idea. Thanks.
