Just about done - have a fine silver pen on order for the door handles. Had a lot of fun putting the windscreen glazing back in as it didn't like the extra thickness of paint around the cab fronts and it pushed chunks of paint off which wasn't good. I ended up filing around the panes at one end and made my own flush glazing for the other. I didn't get that with the other 87s I've resprayed.

    Anyhow I rescued it!

    Very tasty!

Mine's coming along with the main spraying done. After painting the light grey, I masked the area off (with the roof all masked off from before) and sprayed the yellow ends and cab roofs.

I let it set, then masked off the cab roofs and all around the lower bodysides with the join 10mm from the bottom of the loco body and sprayed the dark grey.

Finally masked off around the cab windscreens and brushed black acrylic for the subtle effect from the prototype - they actually had black window surrounds, not dark grey. Also brushed the dangly bits off the bottom of the bodyshell.

Detail and transfers next with a coat of varnish to follow.

Looking good. What base model was it? 006?

I wonder if Bachmann will ever do one of these?...

Seemed to generate some interest, when I recently sold on Ebay.

I think it's like marmite, you either love it or hate it?!

Snap - your orange looks lighter than mine, could be the daylight!

Further feedback.   Before I sent it back to KMRC the lower colour of executive light grey on 87 009 is really good to my eyes in the flesh.   In the catalogue it looks more like their old almost yellowie colour so no concerns there and I am totally happy with the livery for 87006 - the black vs grey argument will probably rumble on but to me from all the images I have seen Hornby have got it right ( I wonder what the artwork revision was that delayed the decorated sample being shown at the same time as 87009? - we maynever know but I might ask Simon at the next show just out of interest).   Not sure yet if the model has cab lights in Night mode as I have only run 87006 in on DC but again I think Hornby have got the LED colour bang on too - very in line with the period so more warmish white.

Moving onto decoder space....reading both the new pamplet vs the original one that came with the first 2 models there is a relocation of the socket for these 21 pin versions.   the loco drawing shows loads of space under the PCB for a decoder and this is where it lives on the new version so quite why they didnt use this space from the first model onwards is utterly beyond me having heard many people struggle to get bodies back on with the decoder fitted on top of the PCB.   I havent removed the body yet for a closer look........

Interesting stuff. Hard to tell from pics of the model re the doors as on some they don’t look black 🤣

Thanks! To answer … yes, the cab doors and window surrounds do appear to be black on the model.

Oops; well spotted! With the 92 I took the pics as soon as the loco was placed on the layout … and before I read the instructions regarding how to unclip the pantograph! I had a quick try but didn’t want to force it to risk breaking. I’ve since learnt how to unclip the pan but not taken any pics since.

Thanks for the reply. Shame. The window surrounds should be black, the doors should be the same as the rest of the body. Never mind. Love the layout, keep the pics coming.

Well … work has gone crazy busy recently so progress with the layout and latest project is paused for now … however my birthday pressies from 2021 have finally arrived! 😁 Just unboxed and tested each 87 and each are very smooth runner, while no obvious QC issues to report so far. A few pics …

I couldn’t resist hooking the IC Exec liveried 87’s to a steel coil rake … over 10,000hp! I’ll renumber and rename one of them while probably keeping the other as 87009 City of Birmingham.

Hopefully work will ease off in the next week or two to allow some progress to occur during the Easter break and beyond … while a few other pre-orders are on the horizon. I recently attended the Model Rail Scotland show and the forthcoming Heljan 86’s look good …

The pair looks great. Now the million dollar question - does 87006 have black doors in model form?!

It looks pretty freshly painted here 8th September 1984 so also one of the earliest into Intercity Executive livery but that looks like cabside numbers to me. The Hornby catalogue pictures show the later version of the livery with White BR arrows rather than black cabside. It might have been 1987 before it got white arrows, haven't found a reliable picture otherwise but it still had cabside numbers then.

The model has all the TDM clobber on the front anyways. But looking at that Instagram link I shared the model does have numbers. Just the mystery of the black door(s) on 87006 to solve!

I let the acrylic varnish used to stick the panes in cure for a while, then clean them up with a cotton bud dipped in acrylic water borne thinners. I will use latex gloves this time though.

That’s another good tip. Thanks to you both.

My set and the test samples from Brian arrived yesterday (and my shell that he used for the glazing). Test photos from Brian below:

Look forward to glazing a few tractors when I’m back from Ally Pally later.

    Kind regards,

This looks great. I hate fitting them though, never get a clean finish, there’s always a fingerprint somewhere 🤣

This repaint looks superb! Great job.

But the more liveries I see the Hornby 87 in, the more convinced I am that the cab profile is not right. It just seems too curved. I thought it with the EP and did say so to Hornby, and it does seem more apparent in some liveries than others. Anyone else agree?

    Thank you, very kind 😃

I managed to fit in a jolly to Model Rail Scotland today and visited the Heljan stand. Livery samples of 86401 in NSE and 86417 in IC Mainline were available … lovely looking models.

I had a brief chat with Ben and he’s feeding back to the factory that the white numbers and lettering are a bit darker as the NSE blue is showing through, so hopefully will be improved before production (maybe due this summer, with the 86/2’s still targeting the end of the year).

Hope they’re sorting the stripes on 417 and the shade of grey on 401, and the printing around the raised decals too 😃

yes ive accumulated a little pile of noses over the years, about 10 in my spares box of different configs I was debating their future, but will hang on for now, especially as the circuit board compatibility is an easy one to swap.

Got to admit no reason to trade up from my older ones from what ive seen, but there are still a few gaps to be filled…

The chassis under that 37254 for instance was off a 37275 (round buffers no skirt), but is not sprung and that loco was destined to become 37260.. but its quite clear Bachmann has an IS 37 with that combo and headlight in its EPs displayed.

So far A/S and Bachmann arent really stepping on each others toes, but obviously may change, but neither have demonstrated to cross those lines in a big way yet.

Apart from 37043 but I take your point. Enjoyed your review, and interesting that the noses fit from older ones. One of the things I like about the new model is the finer detail on the noses. The windscreens are still the biggest improvement and a huge one at that.

Those were the colours I was thinking of using. Did you do the pan well a different colour? I was thinking Exec dark grey.

I usually go with railfreight grey for the roof wells but then cover them in muck anyways as they never seemed to be clean.

I think it's a re-draw, as the original sheet didn't include the /0 alternative numbers.

On the subject, of 90130, What colours did you use to paint 130? I was wondering if they used original SNCF shades or the closest UK colours (or if the 2 are the same!)

    Yeah I think you’re right.

I’ve got with rail grey for the lower band, and what became RFD international grey for the upper body and bog standard orange for the orange. Same approach coming for 90136 which is next up after sleeper 90021.

Superb work . I’m having a little problem getting the chains unhooked on mine . Any tips would be appreciated. Also I know someone who has fitted an EM1 but I’d love to know where!  I can’t see how as the tolerances are very tight between the motor and drive shaft and speaker / potential area for milling. There are also 2 screw mounting lugs (poles?) right in the way !

Thank you 😊 I didn’t touch the chains as I didn’t need to remove them on this one. I’ve not looked at speaker modifications for these yet.
