  1. Yes. In fact according to some news reports this ship had two pilots onboard
  2. Contains a lot of interest, but hard going to listen to. (He needs to improve his preparation and stick to the subject!) He made a big thing about the increase in the size of container ships in the last few years as if ships of this tonnage were new, whereas tankers have been larger than this for a long time. I would suggest the real difference when it comes to manoeuvring is that these container ships are high with considerable windage compared to tankers which are low and squat.
  3. Markings on the bow (circles with crosses in them) which can be seen in some photos show the Ever Given has 2 bow thrusters. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fleetmon.com%2Fvessels%2Fever-given_9811000_16086396%2Fphotos%2F2255085%2F&psig=AOvVaw1dMJZP5sXL0f0OZv2mCKnF&ust=1616770624271000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAIQjRxqFwoTCJjynIzay-8CFQAAAAAdAAAAABAx (The marking below the anchor indicates a bulbous bow)
  4. Totally agree. In 1983 I was through the Suez Canal 13 times in under 4 months. We were lightering off very large tankers in Suez Bay, going through the canal, then to discharge ports in the Mediterranean.
  5. I would certainly expect it to be; MCRs (Machinery Control Rooms) should always be manned in confined waters. I would also expect to have sufficient generators running to reduce the risk of a black out if one fails.
  6. As an ex Merchant Navy engineer I can say that was a fairly common name for them (usually prefixed with bl**dy)!
  7. You might find this website interesting. https://www.scottishshale.co.uk This is a new version of their website and a work in progress. (I think the old site was easier to navigate!)
  8. The old South Queensferry Branch that ran between Dalmeny Junction and Port Edger. The viaduct is the south approach to the Forth Bridge. No obvious railway connection, but the bridge over the Union Canal carried an industrial railway into the Philpstoun Shale Oil Works which closed in 1936. . The oil works was located in the area of trees to the left and the waste bing can be seen in the background. This photograph shows what the area looked like. The bridge in my photo is the one on the left.
  9. A change in the hardness of the plastic in Peco Parkside kits might simply be that Peco use a different supplier for the raw material than Parkside did. It could also be that Peco are using the same plastic they use in other products to reduce the number of different grades they need to stock. Having said that I haven't noticed any difference in the plastic used in their '0' gauge kits except some underframe parts previously always moulded in black (e.g. axleguards) are sometimes now in other colours (just makes painting slightly more complicated). I assume you are talking about the 4mm kits. Unless there's been another change, when I last built 4mm kits they came with Gibson wheels. The change from Markits wheels to Gibsons took place some time prior to Peco acquiring the range. I understand this change was originally due to supply problems with the Markits wheels.
  10. For 7mm scale lamps I drill a shallow hole in the lens then paint it dark red. Once dry I then add a blob of Krystal Klear on top to form a lens. Finally gloss varnish over the top. For 4mm you could possibly miss out the Krystal Klear.
  11. There were a considerable number of stories about this in the Scottish press last year and most people I've mentioned it to said they received leaflets through the door about it, so people should be aware of it. I think even the 2022 deadline maybe too soon as I can see equipment and tradesmen availability being a problem given the number of premises involved (and that's leaving out Covid).
  12. I once had route planning software (Autoroute IIRC) that when asked for a route from the ferry port in Rotterdam to the Harz in Germany plotted a route that involved taking the ferry to Hull, driving to the Channel Tunnel to cross to France and then driving to the Harz!
  13. It appears that at one time the actual sailing of the ship was the duty of the Sailing Master who was actually a Warrant Officer. From Wikipedia: The master, or sailing master, is a historical rank for a naval officer trained in and responsible for the navigation of a sailing vessel. The rank can be equated to a professional seaman and specialist in navigation, rather than as a military commander. In the British Royal Navy, the master was originally a warrant officer who ranked with, but after, the lieutenants. The rank became a commissioned officer rank and was renamed navigating lieutenant in 1867
  14. They seem to be still advertising touring pitches, but I am sure I read somewhere the Beddgelert forest site was planning on moving over to static caravans or chalets only. Tynllwyn campsite at Rhydyronen for the Talyllyn https://www.tynllwyncaravanpark.co.uk/touring-and-camping/
  15. A 1960s GPO film about marine communications. When I went to sea in 1972 this was how all comms were done, by the time I retired in 2016 I could direct dial a call from my cabin or the Engine Control Room to a shore number and send or receive emails all via satellite.
  16. Something I was taught as an apprentice was don't use files you want to use for brass on steel, a file thats been used on steel will not cut brass properly.
  17. Regarding the 17V output is this being measured or is it from documentation? If measured is it with a loco running or open circuit (ie controller full on with no loco or other load present)? Getting a higher voltage on an open circuit is quite normal, when a load (a loco in this case) is drawing power the maximum voltage will be lower.
  18. Two classes that I think might have a wide (geographical) market appeal: Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0. Allocated to every region except the Southern. BR Standard 4MT 2-6-0. Allocated to every region except WR, (though a different tender would be required for some of the Southern Region examples)
  19. A few more: Leith Central Portobello Prestonpans Waverley East
  20. Reviving an old topic after spending a few hours looking through photos Bogside - Fife Dalmeny Junction Drem Heriot - Waverley Route Inverkeithing
  21. My brother-in-law, who was in the traffic police, used to say there were no dangerous roads (in the UK) only inappropriate driving.
  22. To quote Douglas Adams: “Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.”
  23. I worked on ships for over 40 years and there was a noticeable improvement in safety and accident rates over that period driven to a large extent by legislation. My boss used to say the trouble with common sense is that it's not very common. It has also been said people should remember that health and safety legislation is often written in someone's blood.
