  2. Hi all

Good to talk to you Paul. I have not posted on here for some time, not really any reason other than the lack of news concerning the layout. Its settled down into a routine now, Go to a show operate for a few days, put it away, get the layout out a week or two before the next one and go through the maintenance and snagging list.

DEMU was show number 17, and its good to see that I am still getting good feedback on it, and a lot more shows to go. Running wise, Ok but the Sprat and winkles are still giving me grief, a good maintenance session is needed on these and a re think on the stock box to stop them getting knocked around in transit.

New to the layout, is the SAU Mk3, (Seagull action unit) photos to follow, and to complement it, a full surround sound system to annoy the hell out of adjacent exhibitors,……sorry to add ambience to the scene.

Thanks all for your interest, think its about time I sorted some new photos out, watch this space

  3. its been a long drawn out story, but the last group formed to have a go at saving it, folded after the owner decided to scrap it, then the railway stepped in when it as found to have asbestos contamination, and thats how it is now, i think 46009 stands a better chance of restoration. :)

  4. Hi

    You just missed one yesterday!

    Next shows

    Alsager 16-17/11/13

    Southampton 25-26/01/14

    Stourbridge 12-13/04/14

    DEMU showcase 1/05/13-1/06/13

More to follow, I am now getting bookings for 2017

Not a lot to say about the layout really, other than the usual maintenance, I operated it yesterday, for 2and a half hours, with only one snag, a coupling not dropping, no sticking no derailments, its just become a pleasure to operate. The “operational, problems still exist, me talking to the public instead of concentrating on what’s going on, and one particular snag yesterday, trying to eat fish and chips with those seagulls attacking.

Just a question. Will Glenuig be on the show scene any where this Winter. Its a long while since I saw it, and I am still working on a E M layout that was inspred by Glenuig .

    Regards and best wishes

  5. Hi Damian

This is the image of the depot I was trying to re-create - a classic spotters view!

(PS It wouldn't let me embed the image file so it has to be a link?)

The view i am more accustomed to, is off the end of platform 1/2, i spent many hours there in the 80's and 90's, wondering what beasties were hidden behind those stone walls. Looking forward to this one

  6. This is the way I have done water, and most of my methods are from Troels Kirk, of the coast line fame.

Start of with something that you would expect to find in the bottom, ie, sand or rocks. A thick layer of PVA on the top of that, now if you are modelling dirty water, a bit of muck colour in with it.

Then use artist acrylic media, a sort of thick varnish that can be worked into textures and form peeks in waves etc. At this stage, start to colour this by mixing in coloured paint, but small amounts. After a few layers of the media, and you have got the colour and transparency right, a few good layers of artist acrylic gloss varnish over the top.

  7. Gary, I have just had a scan through the pics on the slide and I love the one with the Lobster, and BIB  hahahhaaaa

Question for you = how can I replicate those wonderful Blood Red sunsets, and bright Orange Sunrise shots?

    Andy :sungum: :sungum:

Yes it is a bit of a problem getting those colours right, the part of the world that you are interested in has an ever-changing atmosphere and no two days or hours are the same.

It wasn’t a lobster I was about to demolish, it was actually (vegetarians turn away now) side of a pig, that had been smoked Texas style in a burning bale of hay on the back yard. The location is Elgol on Skye, a place that has become my second home. It is at the place where I first sketched out what became Glenuig,

  8. Hi Andy

The semaphores disappeared from the West Highland, in 1985, the exception been around the immediate Fort William area. Radio signalling became active on the Mallaig section in late 87,and the rest followed the year after, sorry!

The Dapol LMS ones would be ok, but throw in a Reading western region tubular post, with UQ arm, most of Mallaig was signalled with these, so they were possibly the furthest west, western type signals in the UK!
