  1. Great thread. Would be nice to see more photos of 50s on freight!
  2. I felt like I ought to buy something and had a £20 burning a hole in my pocket so walked away with a wagon never-the-less. He seems like a nice guy just running the shop as a bit of a hobby. These kind of places always seem to have some hidden gems even though it wouldn't be my first choice of model shop!
  3. Hmmm I'm not sure I agree with this. When I asked after something in one of the cabinets, he was looking for the box for it for ages which he wasn't able to find. In the end it lost him a sale.
  4. I've lived nearby for the last 10 years so know the station very well. I kick myself for not photographing it before London Overground got their hands on it (so much worse to use than it used to be!). It's nice to see someone doing it accurately Andy! The photos further up the page really show it coming together well. I was just looking at pictures to try and work out when the scissors were removed. They still seem to be there in 81 but gone by 86. Do let me know if you need anything measuring up. I'm away travelling until February but should be moving back to the area again in March. Guy
  5. Terry, I found it might take a few coats with the airbrush (3 minimum) - it doesn't cover that well (probably because its yellow!). Good luck and don't forget to post up some photos of your PGAs once they're done! Guy
  6. Hi Terry, Yes - transfers from Fox! On the subject of paint, Railmatch used to do an ARC mustard. It's not listed any more though. Guy
  7. I was spraying just that very colour last night. Yes, it's your best bet for ARC! Guy

    Peco OHLE

Clive, just posted a list on the DEMU forum. I assume it is Mk3 stuff? The list in 4mm is: Double sided masts Pack of 5 Double Armed masts Pack of 5 End mast with Tension Weight Pack of 5 2/3/4 span H section gantry Wires 135mm Pack of 10 Wires 152mm Pack of 10 Wires 174mm Pack of 10 Wires 200mm Pack of 10 Wire sections seem very short! Peco OHLE

Is this based on a statement from Peco or is it conjecture? We are in the worst possible place at the moment. The promise of two systems with neither properly launched. From what I can tell, the Dapol masts are too flimsy to support tensioned wires. Their plan was (IIRC) to make plastic wires (there was also talk of etched ones at one point) but this would require the use of their own fixed-height pantographs. Given this, I think it would take quite some skill to be able to lay track and place OHLE at the correct height from one another which isn't going to look so great from a running point-of-view when the pan either pulls the wires down or simply rides a mill or two below wire height. Still, in 2mm, without wires, the Dapol stuff is probably ok. I haven't seen any layouts using it in 4mm though. Guy

So... 4 years later. Whatever happened to this?
  11. Great video. Interesting fact that is mentioned in the comments: the weight of an HST is less than 4 loaded stone wagons!
  12. Worked in Ealing for a year and didn't know about this. Might pop by later as I'm out that way!
  13. I think the service you get depends massively on where you live and the quality of staff working in your area. Where I live in West London, Yodel are absolutely awful. They never put a card through the door (even though their tracking site claims they have). Royal Mail, on the other hand, always card me and I can usually pick up from the local sorting office (5 minutes walk) the next morning from 7am before I go to work. Oh, and the sorting office is open late on Wednesday nights till 8pm. I've had deliveries where I was carded on a Wednesday morning and picked up the delivery from the office the same evening.
  14. Got any photos of it Kev? I must have missed this at Showcase! Should open my eyes a bit more...
  15. For the love of god… can we keep this thread on topic (models rather than prototype)? I know we all love the APT (and Class 40s… who wouldn't!) but as Andi mentioned in #143 there are no less than 4 other existing threads to post prototype stuff on! Kev, I really like your driving trailer mod. How did you do the roof details? Now how about doing a model of 48204? http://www.flickr.com/photos/35476094@N04/8500677677/in/set-72157632832235566 Guy
  16. The trailer second etch is on the previous page (4). He's also done a buffet car that he had with him at Scaleforum. On Saturday Shane had just taken delivery of the van trailer and driving trailer etches. I'm fairly sure that all of them are only test etches at the moment and aren't available commercially just yet. From chatting at Scaleforum it sounds like there is still plenty of work to do to get e.g. the ride height correct as well as adding detail such as the pipework for the brakes onto the bogies and the pipework between cars.
  17. Those of you who came to Scaleforum will have seen Shane's excellent APT etches on the DEMU stand. I'm really regretting not taking photos of them now as they were stunning. The "nose job" to taper the front of the driving car looks good too. A simple(ish) change but one that makes a massive difference! Hopefully he'll be along in a bit with more photos.

It looks like your access got revoked as your membership expired. I've sent you an email explaining the same. Please can you get in touch with the membership secretary to sort out your renewal? Many thanks, Guy
  19. Please can we stay on topic and focus on modelling the APT? There are prototype threads for discussing the prototype and whether it was a failure or not.
  20. Just read your post on airbrushing acrylics. I sympathise as so often I've had the same thing happen when thinning the humbrol acrylics. I tried all kinds of things, thinning with IPA, thinning with water, thinning with mixtures I the two, adding retardant to the mix etc etc. I think the only thing that really works is using the Tamiya thinners in at least a 50/50 ratio. Better than that though, just use Tamiya acrylics or Vallejo as they both seem better formulated for spraying (doesn't help you with rail blue though!). Anyway, best of luck with the peak and getting well! Guy
  21. Rich, I agree, it's not a perfect kit and there is definitely room for improvement. Casting the whole box in one piece would be a good idea - I see no reason why this can't be done as the undercuts are not too challenging for nice flexible rubber to cope with. The under frame castings of the air tank and brake distributer are rather crude and could do with work. I've got some photos of the under frame that I took whilst crawling under one of these last year that I'll dig out and post up if that helps? What are your issues with the bogies other than the fact that the side frame castings are a bit crude? Regarding the hand wheels, I used Colin Craig's etched ones (sorry - not on the photo) which are finer and look miles better than anything you can do with a 3D printer or as a white-metal casting (as per the ones supplied with the S-kits kit). The prototype wagons ran with disk-braked Gloucester mark IV bogies (as per my model and WBF's photo on the previous page), Gloucester Fast-Freight bogies and Davies and Lloyd ESC1 clasp-braked bogies. Colin makes decent versions of the Gloucester MkIV and the ESC1 (fully compensated for P4!) so it'd be a bit silly to duplicate these. However there is a gap in the marker for a decent version of the Gloucester Fast Freight. Guy
  22. Yes, it goes together very easily. I've got a second one that I need to finish off and then weather the pair. Mine will be fairly lightly weathered but it would be good to see someone do them in the beaten-up condition that they are now in! Guy
  23. They were built on bogies recovered from tank wagons for Procor (on lease to Foster Yeoman) and Tiger Rail (leased to TML?) and used on aggregate trains out of Merehead and channel tunnel construction trains. You can find more photos on Huw Millington's Flickr gallery here: S-Kits already do a kit of them that looks like this (finished as a Yeoman version): I've since added the distinctive large hand wheel! Guy
  24. How about fixing them in with Klear (or gloss acrylic varnish if you don't have any Klear)? Guy
