  1. Your gonna love this one, but one of my kids asked if the radios worked? A challenge to far perhaps
  2. Oh crap. Seeing the trees outside the semi is getting me thinking again about how well my home made tree's are coming together. On the other hand that is what this place is all about. Love the story telling for the thread. On the buildings, just how much dry brushing was involved to get to that look? Was it a basioc was to get the mortar in, and the the bricks dry brished?
  3. AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Being forced to listen to One Direction (My sons choice)
  4. Been on holiday so missed all the fun. Do I have much to catch up on? :-)

  5. RMweb for distracting me from modelling. (Not sure it counts so much at work) I am another sausage finger sufferer so anything related to manipualting small parts That thought that occurs having built something I thought was good, and then thinking of another and better way to try it which means this version is now junk. Time - Why does it go so quickly when modelling and so slowly at other times? Truthfully though my biggest challenge is my own lack of patience which means I rush things some times only to then get really cross with myself as I know I could have done better.
  6. Been wondering if this applies. When you move from buying ready made to a kit, from a kit to adapting a kit, from adapting a kit to building yourself, etc. I'm some where on that path and would consider as my approach is some where on that path.
  7. Thanks for that. Will see what the godess of google can turn up on that and have a nice big tub of talc to try tomorrow night.
  8. Thanks for that as that helps with the colours. I think I probably do agree about your comment on canopy trees for the Sisal tree.
  9. Have not tried tha one yet Atso but will be getting some talc this week and extra super glue.
  10. Following on from a few weeks ago 2 of the suggestions people gave me have been tried. The first was to use some DAS clay to cover the copper wire of the tree but so far I have not managed to perfect this given I am trying to make some Silver Birch trees at the moment. The second was simply to spray the trunks a few times with a white coat. This seems to be work but I do need to get something that is a bit more of a mucky white. Once that was done and the paint dry, the trunks were sprayed with sticky glue and then covered with lengths of chopped up sisal string as the base to which foliage can be attached. Finally once that had set, another coat of spray glue and then a generous coat of foliage. And so the first 2 trees are in place, of about the 40/50 silver birch needed I also have to do around 100 other trees for which I need to paint the trunks and sisal string brown so a trip to B&Q or Hobbycraft to find a decent colour will be done at some point in the future, along with also trying Atsos suggestion to use super glue and talc.
  11. Thanks for the feedback. Seamoss is something I have seen and may work for the main trees. Might get a box to have a play around with and have a play with for the smaller branches.
  12. One of the key pieces of Hemerdon will be the wooded area that runs from the farm house to the end of the passing loops and one of the things I did not consider when choosing Hemerdon as a layout idea was how on earth was I going to cover the area with trees. I guess in my mind I though it would not be that expensive to buy them - wrong on so many levels. Gven that I need around 150 trees to cover the area, and decent tree is between £3 & £4 I could have spent between £450 and £600 which was not a sum I had thought of when planning the layout, and more importantly is not a sum which will get past SWMBO. So that leaves me with a clear option of making them for myself. Hmmmmmm. How the heck do I do that, and how do I do a silver birch compares to the more generic bush trees on the site. The silver birch is much finer and means I will need to work out how to paint the distinctive off white trunk with the odd dash of darker brown that peaks through evey so often. Luckily I am finally getting the hang of searching this little beasty of a web site and there is some great stuff on here. My initial starting point has been the fact I have a load of single core copper wire so I have been playing around with this and my scenic test piece to create some trucks of different forms. One key conclusion I have come to is that the copper wire is fine for the main trunk, but I need something finer for branches, so an idea I am going for is to mix in some picture wire for the branches along with either some static grass for really small twigs or chopped up twizel string. Will see how this goes.
  13. Been on hold for 30 mins now. What's everyone elses record?

      Andy M

Funnily enough I smashed my own record this very afternoon, 65 minutes listening to Handel's Watermusic thanks to E-on, only to be told they could not deal with my request due to an IT fault.............w***ers!

  14. Definite interest, plus looking at the girder that has been created, i'm wondering if Iain is related to Mr Heggs of this fine forum :-)
  15. Does being woken up at 3:30 in the morning by a 5 year old with the question "Daddy, have you found my lego stormtrooper?" qualify me as an early riser?
  16. Steam - I'm another Castle fan. Simple lines and no extra pipes needed that look like they were added on after the engine had been built. Diesel - Its really close between 33, Western and Hymek, but for me the Hymek gets it just because it was the first engine I ever owned as a kid.
  17. To who ever controls the weather. PLEASE STOP THE RAIN. I have a leak in the roof of my shed :-(

      I'm just sitting

      Making the garden grow...

  18. MI3 = Holy Moly. Just wiping the drool off the floor.

  19. Putting something on RMweb that others look at, and provide feedback on. Apart from that, just getting out to the shed and enjoying the time spent what ever i'm doing.
  20. Love the simplicty of what you have created (and your Dad's layout a few pages back). Enjoy running your trains. In fact i'm sure some posts about how you find it to operate would go down well. Out of interest, something that i'm sure a lot of people on here would be interested in is a more step by step guide to how you do your buildings, so if and when you do one of the dioramas have a think about that.
  21. Audioslave - Cochise Now where are the headphones to crank it up.
