  1. Saturday November 20, 1965 The closure of Bristol's last steam shed, Barrow Road. On shed at 08.45 were: in steam : 48266, 92209. Stored : 3696, 30133, 9790, 4630, 5932 Hayden Hall, 3863, 3836, 6965 Thirlstaine Hall. The M7 was in transit from Fratton to a South Wales scrapyard. At 9.00 48266 left with 3863, 3836, 5932, 6965 for Gloucester, on the first stage of their journey to South Wales. https://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5231042465/in/photolist-8YfsFk At 11.00 92209 left with the remaining four tank engines, also for Gloucester. 48751 arrived in the afternoon off a Midlands freight and was probably the last foreign engine to use the shed. 92209 returned from Gloucester and 9680 came on shed after carriage heating duties at Malago. All three engines were on shed next day. https://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5221536218/in/photolist-8XpJNw-8YfsFk-99rnNs https://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5151165285/in/photolist-8Rc4Yz-9pPqyq-8YfsFk-8XpJNw-c9i3tq-bPjKWi https://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5231042339/in/photolist-8YfsDa-ahP4hG-dYoL2F-pj4oYU-7zPfLE-7nJkF7-eYoYAd-a1kYaM-owJzke-hakEPP-nQhr9f-6JK6Hy-67fv1B-6acUbZ-5A87Rg-6ah5Lu-4WcPgW-77addb-77adcu-7FwaSt-bS2m1P-7bQHXs-83NaSh-83K4VP-7Hrs2k-cqVPv3-p4BX1r-9pJYMZ-71QaY5-a1kXhi-6oUKSF-6oYTCC-6oULhH-6oUKuZ-6oUJWZ-6oYUcs-6oYT9A-6oULoR-6oYTdL-6oUKki-6oULpH-6oYTLb-6oYULo-6oYTXL-6oULLr-6oYTbq-6oUKrx-6oYTeG-6oULwk-6oUKjH-6oYU3G Happier times two years earlier https://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5535796354/in/photolist-9rbpoJ-bHnYNa-f4DNi7

  5. 50 years ago tomorrow - Maundy Thursday, March 26, 1964. The sun shone from dawn to dusk as these photos show. 1964 was the last year that steam appeared on express passenger trains in Bristol (with the exception of the Summer Saturday Wolverhampton trains in 1965). 8.00 am A Castle heads out from Temple Meads, substituting for a failed Brush Type 4 on 1M68 8.00 Bristol-Manchester http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5560749036/in/photolist-9tohXo-9tohX5-9tkkgT-9tkkiV-9tkkhg 11.45 am A relief to the Southbound Cornishman 1V32 arrives at Temple Meads behind a Black Five. 6. It was only really possible to do this at the weekend as the shed was too busy on a weekday. It may have been that Barfleur was receiving attention in the shed during the week before being moved outside to await towing to Swindon. She was also in better external condition to Leander, but I would have liked to have given her a similar send off. I visited Risca Scrapyard in April 1965, but there were no engines there and she had been cut up. I recently came across a photo of the scrapyard with a line of GWR types waiting to be scrapped in 1964 with a LMS loco at the end of the line - it may well have been Barfleur. It was a great pity that being withdrawn within three days of each other, they both did not go to Barry, where it would eventually have been saved.
  7. 50 years ago today was the beginning of the end for the Bristol Barrow Road Jubilees, 45682 Trafalgar, 45685 Barfleur and 45690 Leander. On Friday March 13, 1964 45690 had taken out the 1E64 8.40 Bristol to Sheffield, but failed at Gloucester. It returned to Bristol Barrow Road on the Saturday and was withdrawn on Monday March 16. It was in poor external condition compared to this shot of it on Fishponds Bank just seven months earlier http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5132591414/in/photolist-8PxSBq-9MreoF-98tLAx-9MrewB-9MrehZ-8XmEWa-bvugdk-gMBL1Z-bvug94-9egWm1-e9pNbs-8Px4kV-fc7Esb-gMBKXx-8PA4iY After two months in store it was taken inside the shed for rods to be removed and preparation for removal to the scrapyard. A group of young enthusiasts spent the afternoon of Saturday May 23 cleaning it up for its last journey http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5765018981/in/photolist-9MrehZ-8XmEWa-bvugdk-gMBL1Z-bvug94-9egWm1-e9pNbs-8Px4kV-fc7Esb-gMBKXx-8PA4iY Five years later it was still in Barry Scrapyard, mainly intact and awaiting the call http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/6897260375/in/photolist-bvugdk-gMBL1Z-bvug94-9egWm1-e9pNbs-8Px4kV-fc7Esb-gMBKXx-8PA4iY Restored at Derby Works in 1972-73 Leander has worked on the main line frequently in preservation http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5765019771/in/photolist-9MrewB-9MrehZ-8XmEWa-bvugdk-gMBL1Z-bvug94-9egWm1-e9pNbs-8Px4kV-fc7Esb-gMBKXx-8PA4iY 45685 Barfleur was withdrawn just three days later on Thursday March 19, 1964. It was stored alongside the shed for two months http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5133017630/in/photolist-8PA4iY-9Mu3e1-9edS8x-9rbpo9-9Mu3c5-gMBL5X-9rbpoJ Here in happier times departing Bristol Temple Meads with a Northbound Express http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5765567082/in/photolist-9Mu3e1-9edS8x-9rbpo9-9Mu3c5-gMBL5X-9rbpoJ It was moved to Swindon in early June and scrapped at Risca, Newport. 45682 Trafalgar had been Bristol Barrow Road's last surviving Jubilee. It had been away unbalanced since March 5, 1964, but returned on Wednesday March 25. A photo on that day about to enter Barrow Road Shed http://www.flickr.com/photos/55350440@N06/5220937729/in/photolist-8XmETK-drurTr-9Mu3iE-dUw56n-8tYdv6-8u2dtW-eGXjLp-8u2ioY-8yEH2B-8u2dPA-bkr4uf-byjTyg-awex69-9kZCxc-8vZpKk-8u2aQw-8yjWo4-8u2bGb-eqLdtK-hpzPqW-dTv43f-8GGTpE-8SxUbh-e9hmjs-9es5ce-8yo1yd-8SuPg4-8z3XVr-cKwa7o-8z75HG-dxhsQf-dnyvfk-8u2h6S-8tYaPx-8SuPt8-8vKepN-ancpGd-8u2i6m-8yjYfR-9THXZ9-8u2beE-8tY93v-fdrhTH-dXEXe9-8tYbaP-8ynZaW-8tYaix-9g6hUJ-8ynYVy-8yo1Tq-dXCjBW It survived as a celebrity engine for another two months. Just outside Bath it fractured a cylinder and was withdrawn some two weeks later. Here it is stored on Bath Green Park Shed in August 1964. http://www.flickr.com/photos/60631240@N02/7844811384/in/photolist-cXdH7G-8u2gHw-fhhjSp-8tCDrb-kuLXJw-gMBL3T-8TQ5yK-fFMHdA-dAYZ9L-dvrX8H-gGRvu9-gRCZUf-ga2X6G-dfSqiE-fztQce-dsRyR7-ga2V8y-debQj9-8gmhpd-bgCiiK-jQezGA-aBqpRE-czUikY-bzQYFm-cbMBK9 On October 15, 1964 it made its final journey to a scrapyard in Swansea, here seen on shed awaiting its final movement. 21. Thanks for the reminder ! 6999 was one of my favourite Halls, with its fine sounding name. As a Taunton and Westbury engine in the early to mid-sixties, it was a frequent visitor to Bristol. It was also the last Hall I saw in steam before the end of steam on the WR. Barrow Road Shed had closed the previous month and I went to Temple Meads after school and 6999 and Black Five 45061 went onto Bath Road Shed LE's from Gloucester to take out northbound freights later that evening on Friday Dec 10, 1965.
