  1. I think steam workings continued into Yorkshire from Rose Grove to Healey Mills up to the last week of steam in July/August 1968.

  5. Saturday November 20,1965 It was a day rather like today, wet and miserable, appropriate as it was the day that Bristol's last steam shed, Barrow Road closed. At 8.50 there were eight withdrawn engines and two engines in steam, 8F 48266 and 9F 92209. At 9.00 48266 departed with four of the withdrawn engines to Gloucester, seen here leaving the sidings. https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5231042465/in/album-72157625157165429/ 92209 would leave with the final four withdrawn engines at 11.00 and the shed was then empty. On the following day, Sunday 21 November 1965, there were three engines on shed. 8F 48751, 92209 and Pannier Tank 9680. 8F 48751 was stabled outside the foreman's office and would depart north on a freight on Monday https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5221536218/in/album-72157625157165429/ 9F 92209 was stabled on the departure road and would go light engine to Gloucester https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5151165285/in/album-72157625157165429/ Pannier Tank 9680 was kept at the shed for a number of days for final shunting, seen here silhouetted at the back of the roundhouse https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5231042339/in/album-72157625157165429/ Steam engines continued to arrive in Bristol until March 1966, but were stabled on Bath Road Diesel Depot. The whole complex is now an industrial estate.

  7. Thursday 14 November, 1963 Bristol Barrow Road had nine Jubilees allocated up until September 1961. 45572/77, 45651/60/62/82/85/90/99. Six were transferred away to Shrewsbury on dieselisation of the routes to the Midlands and Northeast, leaving 45682/85/90. They continued to make occasional visits to Bristol as here with 45572 on the 15.05 from Mancheste on November 14, 1963. https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5285308281/in/album-72157625527116710/ The last of the group I recorded in Bristol in steam was 45660 in January 1965, by then the last survivor. Ironically, 45699 was stabled at Barrow Road in April 1965 on its journey to Barry from Eatstleigh.

  13. Monday September 9, 1963 Bristol The first Monday of the 1963-64 Winter Timetable and Jubilees were in evidence, covering for Peak non-availability. In this first shot Bristol Barrow Road Jubilee 45690 Leander descends Fishponds Bank towards Barrow Road Shed and Bristol Temple Meads. The photo clearly shows the gradient of the bank and also the small merchant's coal depot, now part of the country's history, but once common. https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5132591414/in/photolist-UP3cvN-U2ivTd-U2ivTJ-Srvqpt-PDy3CD-LvpRi8-GLggRA-GLggQy-GLggRL-Csw7Rk-CpoLG7-tQtoD4-tQtoHH-tQtoHc-tQtoGk-tQtoEM-tQtoFt-sJ2ydK-rVtH6p-rVtH6e-rUMvL7-rUMvDd-rUMvCS-q7WCr9-nGrvDj-e9pNbs-9MrehZ-98tLAx-8Px4kV-8PxSBq-nNoS7M-gMBL1Z-gMBKXx-fc7Esb-bvugdk-bvug94-9MreoF-9egWm1-8XmEWa-8PA4iY-9MrewB Later the same afternoon I was surprised to see 45690 rostered for the 17.35 Bristol to York, which meant that the southbound Devonian would be arriving with steam. I was able to take this photo of Jubilee 45675 Hardy passing the engine sidings at Bristol Barrow Road with the train. https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5254267762/in/photolist-91iuKu A hasty retreat was then required to photo 45690 returning north on 1N87 York train. It was impossible to get a good shot of trains leaving Platform 12, and this was no exception. The reflection of the Temple Meads approaches on the windows of the first coach provide (limited) interest. https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/10361570833/in/photolist-UP3cvN-U2ivTd-U2ivTJ-Srvqpt-PDy3CD-LvpRi8-GLggRA-GLggQy-GLggRL-Csw7Rk-CpoLG7-tQtoD4-tQtoHH-tQtoHc-tQtoGk-tQtoEM-tQtoFt-sJ2ydK-rVtH6p-rVtH6e-rUMvL7-rUMvDd-rUMvCS-q7WCr9-nGrvDj-e9pNbs-9MrehZ-98tLAx-8Px4kV-8PxSBq-nNoS7M-gMBL1Z-gMBKXx-fc7Esb-bvugdk-bvug94-9MreoF-9egWm1-8XmEWa-8PA4iY-9MrewB

I remember 42979 backing down from Barrow Road onto the 7.25 p.m. Newcastle, one hour late. There was simply no available motive power for this train which was the heaviest train of the day, including the mail stock. 42974 was stuck a the back of Barrow Road under repair for what seemed a long period, but may only have been 3-4 weeks. Four of the class were allocated to Bescot in the mid-1960's, 42957/74/75/79, and they would have been the more common visitors to Bristol

  16. Saturday 29 August, 1964 Yate (near Bristol) This was the penultimate Summer Saturday of 1964 and the penultimate occasion when Midland trains to and from Bristol were worked by steam. Yate was an interesting junction where the two lines to Bristol, via Mangotsfield and Filton, diverged. By 1964 both Midland and Western trains used both routes to ease congestion. The Midland route closed in late 1969 and all trains now run via Filton and Bristol Parkway. The motive power on this day was very varied with Jubilees, Black Fives, Halls, Castles, B1's, Standard 5 & 4's and a 4F on a local freight. It was worth the cycle ride to witness the procession of trains from the North East, the Midlands and the Birmingham area heading for the Southwest and their return workings as holidaymakers returned home. 20. I think your photo can be dated between April and October 1964. In this photo 5055 has arrived at Bristol Temple Meads on April 7, 1964, while still allocated to Hereford. https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/6181158630/in/photolist-TvwpiW-SDokF9-fqjfZK-fqjfZe-fqjg1g-fqjfYK-fqjg1H-fqjfYc-dAyGeq-aqd47w The loco has lost its front and cabside number, but has not yet had 5055 painted on the cab as in your photo. On allocation to Gloucester Horton Road 5055 appeared on a number of local passenger trains between Bristol and Gloucester in August 1964. The last occasions I recorded the engine in Bristol were Sat Sep 12 1964. 5M76 21.10 Temple Meads Freight Yard to Oxley Fri Sep 25 1964. 4H60. 21.30. Temple Meads Freight Yard to Worcester It would have been withdrawn soon after.
  21. Photos taken at Yate on the outskirts of Bristol where the main line from Bristol to the Midlands and North through Westerleigh met the line from Bristol via Filton. Only that line now remains as the route to Gloucester and the North. 1964 was the final year of steam operation on many of the Summer Saturday extras on this route, mainly hauled by Jubilees and Black Fives. The only exceptions were the Wolverhamptons, generally with Britannias, Halls or Granges as all the Castles at Oxley were withdrawn in January.
  22. The last five Jubilees in service were, as mentioned above, 45562/93 45647/75/97, all allocated to Leeds Holbeck (55A). Holbeck closed to steam at the beginning of October 1967, but 45562/93 were used on specials after that date. I believe that 45562's final working was on October 28, 1967, when it retired to Normanton Shed. Here are photos of some of the remaining Jubilees in Holbeck roundhouse https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5672368713/in/album-72157626776473732/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5672936694/in/album-72157626776473732/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/6223243459/in/album-72157626776473732/ Wakefield was closed to steam in May 1967 and used as a dump for engines from other north eastern sheds. It was working expresses from Bristol right to the end, failing at Gloucester on Friday March 13 and returning to Bristol for withdrawal. Here is a photo of it some six months earlier, in excellent external condition, approaching Barrow Road Shed with an express from Nottingham https://www.flickr.com/photos/bristolsteam/5132591414/in/album-72157626776473732/
