  1. Those P17s are very smart indeed! I look forward to seeing them at Easter! I don't suppose there will be transfer sheets available for them at the show will there?! Cheers J
  2. That looks absolutely fantastic! I do like a good 6 wheel vehicle to add interest to a rake, and this is definitely a good one! Very much looking forward to seeing more of it! Cheers J
  3. What an absolutely brilliant thread! I don't remember much about the NYMR from before about 1984 (see below photo for why!) but a lot of the locos and stock are more than familiar to me, some thankfully still! Once I get chance I'll have a look through my photo archive, and see what I've got to share, probably mostly my dad's photos, as I didn't start wielding a camera until the early 90s, and it took a while before there was anything worth sharing! For now though, here's a very young me at Goathland sometime around 1984, making sure everything is ship shape with the approaching train! Cheers J
  4. A meagre pre order from me has gone in for just one, but I can't really fit much more into my sidings! I dare say I'll add a few more eventually once I've got a bit more space to play with! I presume they can realistically be mixed in a rake with BDAs as well, nice and dirty with a LoadHaul 60 on the front! Cheers J
  5. So it has, I hadn't noticed that! Thanks! Cheers J
  6. Nice, plenty to digest there! Is it known if these are composites of available detail options out specific to models announced? The option of a P3 boiler is good, meeting there should be the possibility of a pre grouping loco, yummy! Looking forward to seeing some more on this, including (hopefully) some different angles of the CAD in due course. Cheers J
  7. It is indeed, then once spotted, followed by the 'I've had this for ages'! What I was meaning was maybe four different twin packs which each contain different pairs, so an 8 coach rake can be made from 4 packs. Say; two First, one First & one Standard, one Standard & one Buffet, and two Standard. The remaining Standard needed for the full 9 could be paired with the DVT or as an individual vehicle, depending on how the packaging is developed. Maybe! Cheers J
  8. Ooooo! Colour me intrigued! I've still got my 1992 Hornby version in its box (it's had plenty of use though) and have been considering updating it, now it can stay as it is for nostalgia! Very much looking forward to seeing this develop, and hopefully joining my collection eventually! I'm presuming that in the fullness of time, and licenses permitting, we'll see more liveries including maybe the commemorative ones. Hopefully the coaches will be available either individually or tactical packs so a full rake can be built up over time. I'm sure all of this, and more will be dealt with in future updates, and like the rest of us I'll be looking forward to that immensely! Cheers J
  9. A quick update; I've been having a go at the backhead and it's had an initial few splashes of paint. I've also made a regulator out of a bit of brass wire so it has a bit more shape to it than the flat one in the kit. I realise I've fitted the regulator in full open, so the fireman will be rather cross I imagine! I've had to guess at what it should actually look like, so if anyone can spot any errors or omissions, please do let me know! Finding a photo of a G5 cab is not easy! I have seen the GA drawings which have helped. I know I'll have to fashion a couple of gauges to mount on the cab sheet but I'm not sure how many, or where they should be in relation to the whistle pipes which emerge from the top of the firebox. Hopefully someone will be able to shed a bit more light on the situation! Cheers J
  10. Looking forward to seeing these in action, presumably with home-made transfers? I know someone who could do with a set too! Cheers J
  11. I recognise those hands! Who let my dad loose with a Stanley knife?! Looking forward to seeing the whole layout in action, and one day with a G5 on it! Cheers J
  12. Well, I've finally been able to give my two MkII MWs a run, albeit on a makeshift shunting layout, but 12' of forwards and reverse and a couple of points is better than sitting in a box! They were both, thankfully smooth straight from the box but the bogies (as expected) struggled with the points, which are brand new Peco mainline ones. Centring springs removed and pickups tweaked and everything was fine! Well, it seemed fine! TAW had developed a worrying limp which after various issues with other peoples immediately set alarm bells ringing! Anyhow, a bit of investigation showed that it wasn't a valve gear issue (phew!) and that it occurred at the same point of every wheel revolution. So the chaos came out and the drive gears examined closely. It turned out that a minute piece of plastic swarf or maybe a fleck of paint/glue from the centering spring had got into one of the teeth. Once that was removed and it all reassembled I tentatively applied power, and off she went, happy as can be! So my issue was one of my own doing, but enough to cause erratic running. Hopefully I'll be able to get them run in properly now! Cheers J
  13. Yes, I noticed that too! I look forward to seeing that, as the last one I built had quite a few fit errors, lots of flash and was a bit of a struggle to build square as a result! It's certainly an item of interest! Cheers J
  14. So, it's been a while. I haven't been static in my activities, but they have been interrupted by the various festive goings on of the last few months, and the work related lack of energy that goes along with them! Hopefully I've now managed to get my elbow in gear with the G5 again! Today I've been looking at the various small details and pipe runs that adorn the body, which are considerably more in number than when working in 4mm scale! The Westinghouse pump and it's main pipes have been fitted, along with the two tank front lubricated, made from various gauges of wire and the relevant castings from the kit. I've also corrected the fire iron retainer from the top of the left hand tank, which was at 90 degrees the wrong way (the shadow of where it once was is visible behind it) I've also been experimenting with weight for the front end, and have made a start on a closed pipe to fill with liquid lead (the micro-shot variety, not the molten sort) which after an test run, seems to stop it kangarooing down the track! Hopefully I'll find a bit more time of the coming weekends to carry on! Cheers J
  15. The following is copied directly from the Oxford Rail facebook anouncemnt, giving a bit more detail on the locos and liveries being done: Our 2019 range will include: New Tooled J27- OR76J27001- LNER No.1010 OR76J27002- BR (Early) No.65837 OR76J27003- BR (Late) No.65817 OR76J27004- BR L&NER (Red Lining) No.1214 So they've not bitten the bullet and gone for an NER liveried version (P3) which is a shame but I guess that'll follow in due course, and enables the spreading of the cost! Cheers J Edited to add bold to quote.
  16. Huzzah! That's (hopefully) one off my list of loco's I was considering building! Looking forward to seeing this progress! Cheers J
  17. Welcome back, after what seems like an invigorating 'break' for you! Barber you say? I think there's a customer here for one please! I do like the vivid green livery the real one carries! Looking forward to seeing further updates and hearing what else you've got up your sleeves! Cheers J
  18. Both of my Princess Coronations have come from my local shop (which I appreciate it not an option for you, and not intrinsic to my point) and we're both in a display cabinet. Does this lessen the enjoyment of buying a loco? Nope. The shop in question carefully handles stock, allowing for customer inspection and test running which with the increasingly detailed nature of today's models is very welcome. I suspect it they were asked not to do so, for a particular purchase, they would, but I've been in when a delivery has arrived and watched as a batch of new locos are tested individually. My point is, just because there's no evidence of a test, ie documentation, does not mean it hasn't been done as a matter of course, or that said loco hasn't spent time in a display cabinet (though with pre orders this is less likely of course) but it still doesn't detract from your purchase. Surely it would be better if you knew all was well with it? On a side note, should I have got a discount as my loco was ex-display?! The problem with factory checking comes down to batch size. Consider the sheer volume of several models all leaving the factory together, it would take days to test and inspect them all, and days cost money for staff and shipping. That cost has to be absorbed somewhere. It's unfortunate that you have had two problem locos and hopefully a resolution can be found both Now and in the long term and that you are once again able to garner enjoyment from red boxes! Cheers J
  19. From what I understand they are mostly Academy moulds, with Airfix supplying some aircraft ones the other way for some good old fashioned mutual benefiting. I was surprised when I first saw them as that would have been a heck of a lot r&d to have done, but a partnership makes more sense! Hope this helps Cheers J
  20. Proper winged ones at that, which was a nice surprise! Very much looking forward to getting them fitted! Cheers J
  21. Hmmmmm, will not be triggered, will not be triggered! Cheers J
  22. There's been a few mentions of 009, but for Hornby to enter that field, I think they'd be doing it like their 00 range; with track and ancillaries to accompany their stock. And with their current situation, I don't think that's likely. I also think that the suggestions of a Double Fairlie would be a heck of a risk as a first loco with the huge amount of differences between all of the FfR's selection of them, you'd be hard pressed to find two the same for muchbof their lives, with variations in wheelbase and overall size for starters! Would Hornby's target market go for a loco in a brand new scale (to Hornby) at north of £200 which I reckon a Double could easily be? I'd be surprised if we didn't see an LMS Princess and a Manor, either this year or next and maybe some sort of Scottish tank loco to go with the J36 (Upgraded J83?). A Q6 in original form would be nice, and having dismantled one, is probably already in CAD as the parts breakdown will allow for the necessary changes easily enough. We could then have a pre-mid-thirties loco or even a pre-grouping one (please!) We've just had the LNER 'TOAD' so some sort of related freight stock for it to hang on the back of would be good. If not reissued steel bodied coal hoppers, then NER wooden ones would be good to go with the Q6. Extra vehicles for existing coach ranges is wise, as there's already a market there, and if tied in to a re-issue with new running numbers can generate plenty of new sales. As for a 'Wow' factor, or whatever it's being marketed as, I could see something like a working level crossing or ready to plant signals which plug and play with their DCC accessory box. Not long to wait, but I'm really hoping there's nothing big for me in there: I've still got plenty of pre-orders to come in the near(ish) future! Cheers J Edited for auto correct typos, not sure I caught them all though!
  23. It's just the J72 at present, though I wouldn't be surprised to see a 71 announced in a year or so, as they are very similar locos with the driving wheels and splashers being the main visual differences. The J72 livery samples are definitely in existence in reality, they were on the stand at Warley and certainly more than an upgrade being a completely new tooling. Much as I'd like to see more NER locos announced, I think that will wait until the E1 (J72) and O (G5 commission for TMC) are available. Having seen the Farish 8f tooling sample, I wouldn't be surprised to see that announced, as the research is all there and the Hornby one is starting to show its age a bit. I'm really not sure which D&E models could be worth going at as the available classes that would really sell in an upgraded form are getting snapped up. The Accurascale Deltic and Hatton's Shed spring to mind, the SLW 24 being a bit of a different level of model but would anyone fancy doing a slightly lower spec one? It'll certainly be interesting for the next couple of years to see where people are putting their eggs! Cheers J
  24. A friend of mine got one from his local shop with the top pair missing. The proprietor was going to send it back, but my friend was able to purchase it from him at a touch over trade price (he wouldn't have bought one otherwise) and is happy to repair it with some brass wire. I appreciate that paying full price, this shouldn't be something one has to do, but yours is certainly not the only Duchess to arrive sans handrails. Cheers J
  25. Instagram competition today, follow Hornby and tag a friend in their post to enter the competition. Prize is a Percy and the Mail Train set. Cheers J
