  1. . Excellent. I hope it's a very early version.
  2. . Well it is good for concrete curing to keep it wet
  3. , Most of these container ships operate much like a "pick-up goods" - and hence should inspire us. I wouldn't be surprised if the container went to Antwerp and was then trans-shipped.
  4. . Simon, I see you have disagreed with this post - why ? Would you be happy if Dave didn't tell people ? Or are you upset that he's bothered and you'd like everyone to ignore you ? I'm confused.
  5. . His "embarrassed" face would be for when he is loaned out by the Fat Controller to Network Rail to cover up another of their "mistakes". .
  6. . Almost certain that they are flexible hydraulic pipes from the units pump to the two large hydraulic rams that you can see starting from just behind the towing hook. A concrete pump usually works by having a dual-direction Archimedes screw working in the entry hopper which brings the concrete over two openings, which are alternately opened and closed by a hydraulically operated "sliding" valve. So as RAM A is drawn back valve A opens and concrete falls into the gap. Valve A closes and ram A pushes forward pusing concrete down the pipe. As this is happening ram B and valve B have been doing the exact opposite, so that there are two "pushes" per cycle. If one watches the end of the hose (or unsecured sections of flexible pipe) one can see the pulses. There is a variation with a simple single piece valve operating over both pipes. .
  7. Well, my maths might very well be wrong (actually probably 101% wrong) however with 7 days to go the first two lines was ; N* ******s ** m* ***o* So I'm not rolling along So "translated" that would be "No wheels on my wagon" ......... --------------------- So today it will be "6 days left ...... ONE wheel on my wagon" .......... then, "5 days left ...... TWO wheels on my wagon" .......... then, "4 days left ...... THREE wheels on my wagon" .......... then, "3 days left ...... FOUR wheels on my wagon" .......... then, "2 days left ...... FIVE wheels on my wagon" .......... then, "1 days left ...... SIX wheels on my wagon" .......... then, "0 days left ...... SEVEN ( ! ! ! ) wheels on my wagon" So a seven-wheeled wagon - seriously, I assume a 6-wheeler. .
  8. . That question is answered by the annual "wish list" poll. At present the top of the list is mainly motive power or scenic items, with coaching stock and wagons some way off the top (excluding a couple of cranes). Only manufacturers can really judge the balancing act between estimated production costs, retail costs and profits, so it is really only they who can decide what is produced - various types of "crowdsourcing" can have an effect. One thing I do agree with you about is the issue of intricate colour schemes. These (within limits) are much more economically done by major manufacturers. The popularity of the colourful Bachmann SE&SC "C-class" 0-6-0 a couple of years ago SEEMS to have been due to many people (NOT JUST SOUTHERN FANS) seeing the pre-release photos and just "falling" for the prettiness of the locomotive. Odd, but seems to be true. Now, whether there are any other locos which can capture peoples' attention like that, and which they are is a mystery that all the manufacturers would like to know the answer to. .
  9. . Does anyone know if the "old" Bodmin Model Railway club layout "Trehayne" ever goes out to exhibitions any more, and especially whether it will feature anywhere in 2015. Thank-you, and a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. .
  10. . Might be an interesting reference (due out 16th April) ; http://www.amazon.co.uk/Southern-Special-Issue-Booster-Locos/dp/1909328359/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1419366092&sr=1-2 ( And it MIGHT inspire someone to model the Class 70s. ) .
  11. . Thank-you Pacific231G - that is excellent. I can easily get to Amberley, so I foresee an early spring visit. Likewise, thank-you Mike Bellamy, I foresee an even earlier purchase as a late Christmas present. .
  12. . Has anyone tried to build a building site monorail ? The type I am thinking of is the one made by Road Machines (Drayton) Ltd., of Horton Parade, West Drayton, Middlesex - see this link ; http://www.irsociety.co.uk/Archives/16/Monorail.htm I can't envisage in getting a working model going in anything less than about 1:22.5 ("G Scale"). ------------ Has anyone got either some more picture links, or any examples of any previous models ? Thanks. .
  13. . I am just so happy about this announcement - an essential gap about to be closed (especially good that they seem to be doing at least some variations). I have voted, and voted - and moaned and moaned, so I must congratulate Hornby for doing the "right" thing. Now a 4-COR from Bachmann for a reasonable price would mean I will be pretty much set for my layout. >

    Ask Dave

. Dave, I think you mentioned your Dad and the Corgi "James Bond Aston Martin" - have you seen this ; http://www.ajb007.co.uk/topic/44868/new-corgi-goldfinger-aston-martin-db5-50th-anniversary-model-2015/ .
  15. . Dave, Something in your "musings" thread awake a brain cell and I thought to ask you what is your view of the commercial practicality is of what might be termed "complicated and cute" old liveries ? This is, rather obviously, inspired by the sell-out SE&CR liveried 700 class whose appeal was, BASICALLY, put down to its "pretty" paint scheme. Obviously such liveries take a lot of research, presumably cost more and are always liable to criticisms from the "rivet counters" who might find an error. Good, or bad ? .
  16. . Why a USATC S160 ? How long did they last in mainline service ? .
  17. . I can't remember plain green with no red stripe being mentioned ????? .
  18. . ........... Bachmann BR(SR) green is probably the correct colour for loco hauled stock but due to reflections on a large surface and other factors it looks too dark to me when applied to a model. In ship modelling (which mainly operates on smaller scales - typically 1/350th to 1/1200th) there is the perennial debate on "scale effect" or "scale colour" - the fact that exact matched paints usually look "wrong" when painted on models. Viewpoints vary (widely) with some saying the "correct" matched paints should be used and others trying to match the paint such that the model looks" correct" from a typical viewing distance (say 3 feet) - it can get very technical when paint specialists get together, including discussions on tone, intensity and reflectance, etc....... .

    Ask Dave

. In reading some of the other threads, I note that the occasional person is thinking of renumbering, or completely re-painting some of the new models (!) With that in mind, will your paints be matched to any available in the UK, or will you be able to supply very small quantities of the appropriate paint ? .
  20. . A fascinating read, I found this bit most interesting ; ".......... We have products planned that have previously been produced, but need updating. We have a programme that has identified locomotives, coaches and wagons for future release. ........" THAT should get a couple of manufacturers to look at their product range. I'm glad we seemingly have another newcomer who seems to be interested in the hobby and interested in communicating. As someone else noted, I think it is time for a new subforum in the "Products and Trade" section for Oxford Rail. .
  21. . Well, at least the reason for the delay with Hornby and Bachmann models is explained! - DJM have booked all the manufacturing slots in China. More seriously, Although a Southern modeller, I AM pleased about this announcement as it MIGHT signal that other rather "old" models could be replaced, but let's see how this does commercially. In addition, this little snippet caught my eye ; DJM Dave :- "............ the revised Beattie is but a couple of months away with the O2 hot on its heals ......." . I didn't know anything about revisions, does anyone know ? .
  22. . It seems odd that colliery locos are so popular as any layout would be quite bleak. What about power stations - Were any Austerities used by the CEGB at old ( 1930s to 1970s ) town power stations ? ( or the equivalent Gas plants ) But I wish everyone good luck (and profits to DJM) with the project
  23. . Did the class 71s (all greens and blue) go through the carriage cleaning plants which were notorious for fading unvarnished paintwork. Certainly I remember some pretty faded blue examples. .
  24. . Any idea of the date of the change over ? Thanks. .
