  1. You are both right of course! The plan is a sketch up so very misleading. That top loop will occupy 9'x5' and I'm not looking to run anything longer than 6 coaches as it's all secondary lines. Sasquatch is not a 12 coach kind of guy. (Although I also have A1s,2s,3s, and 4s!!) Long trains look silly on small layouts as there's always compression. All curves will have a cant this helps with such matters. All stock has metal wheels. Kit builds have pin point bearings. The gradients on Goathland are 1;50 there was a few problems with starting locos in the station, I resorted to banking with an old white metal J50 on a Triang chassis at one point which once perfected was quite effective and great fun. Now there's a thought, radio controlled banker!! Most trains will be short. Ivatt class 4 with 4 coaches. N1 with non corridor pair. J50 with 6 or 7 coal wagons. Crab with 10 vans. Longer trains will be hauled by 10 wheelers WD8f with hoppers 8F with bogie bolsters A2 with Halifax Pullman portion. Patriot on parcels B1 with express perishables Etc. etc.
  2. Now for some specs. B) B) Peco and Shinohara track because I'll be in my 90s if I try to build it myself. All live frogs. Tight curves to be hidden. Gradients 1 in 50 or greater. Open frame baseboards which come apart for easy wiring/working , in case we need to move the layout and to allow the rails to expand in the hot summers here in Oregon. No more kits or RTP but exceptions will be made. To be built in stages although I'm not sure in what order. NE,GN,L&Y railways during 1940s, 1950s & 1960s. I suppose this means I'll have to backdate Goathland and be very nice to Mrs Sasquatch who has offered her help with the scenics. She's better at it than me, her words not mine.
  3. So here's the plan of how it will fit together. Basically three levels but then not much will be on the level anyhow. Goathland isn't! There will be 4 continuous runs. Blue and purple around the outside. Green, a simple small loop (still bigger than Goathland at present) and orange taking in two passes of Queensbury and the low level return loop! Through the tunnel at A. There could be a small tunnel at B allowing the line to be hidden behind a small goods terminus. The scissor crossing at C will enable the whole layout to be switched to an inverted figure 8 allowing trains a run of 120' or more. That's over 3000 scale yards if my calculations are right. Nice. Edit; There's something not right with the junction at bottom center!!!
  4. I was not aware they were!! But what a bonus. Projects in the post include an N1 and J50. Later I will move to scratch building a J6 and am adding the C12 to the list. Funny as I was looking up that route including the viaduct on Google Earth just the other day. I know it's far from grim up there. the grim end of the layout will be the mill town. Which I'm thinking about basing on Keighley . It is a lot of work Queensbury alone has 6 curved platforms with seven station buildings and 3 signal boxes. It has been 20 years since I was in your neck of the woods mate and am itching to visit. don't get me wrong it's wonderful here with all the mountains and forests but that's all there is. No heritage to go visit! The mountain biking is not for wimps
  5. The title of this topic has been changed to accommodate the huge garage layout that Goathland will become a part of. My aim is to build something very scenic in which to watch the trains run. There'll be lots of gradients, viaducts, tunnels and big mills. Two double running lines with varying routes. No fiddle yard as such but hidden passing loops instead. The outer main will include Goathland and a four track line splitting to two tracks at a large junction on the outskirts of a mill town. The inner line will include a model of Queensbury station , the triangle will enable trains to negotiate a double direction reverse loop. The four track mainline is to be Lancs. & Yorks. Queensbury Gt. Northern of course. The short fall is no large terminus as I had always wanted but there will be a total of 10 platforms throughout so mustn't grumble. First step is to draw up a full plan on large paper and check all gradients will be possible. This plan has been evolving over 15 years. Last night the old grey cells went berserk after two glasses of wine all the ideas came together. Now we will see if it pans out. http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/q/queensbury/
  6. Love seeing all the wood work structures Jeff. Bet you would love to be let loose in my cabinet shop!
  7. So Jeff, we have moved house recently (Gimmi 5 bro(an American expression, Ive forgotten the English)& no smiley!) The first stages of the garage conversion are complete. Namely removing all the junk and a thousand nails, a rewire, insulation and drywall. It's 19' x 23' and will house Goathland along one wall and Grim-up-North on the other three and possibly down the middle. Our new layout will be sectional like Goathland for three reasons. 1; makes wiring very easy. 2: allows the boards to be loosened in hot weather to stop buckling 3: comes apart if ever necessary. We found with Goathland that it was great to move the boards in able to work on them. Sped things up no end! Just a thought .
  8. This wouldn't look too out of place on Shefield Park Kal! Built in Brighton of all places! My love of kettles must be in my blood, being from a big railway town. HA ha ha!!! Now it looks very old fashioned but can you imagine the pure excitement back in the late Edwardian period taking your first trip to London behind Gladstone? Pure splendor!
  9. No no Kal. That's mine that is! Nice one Will! The LNER livery is due next month. Lucky for me as I brought an N2 chassis to go under a 3D printed N1 and am after a Bachmann 57/97 chassis for a Lima J50 upgrade. I,ve gone all Gt. Northern, reasons revealed shortly!!!! Jaz. Will you be modeling the York scooter club Mods on their Lambrettas. No Heartbeat theme would be complete without them.
  10. Just been catching up and just have to comment on these: This chappie looks like a Yorkshire man I worked for on Saturday mornings when 13 or so(Cutting grass, washing cars and windows etc). One day the Red Arrows flew over and he piped up "I used to fly planes during the war you know" "Squadron leader what". Yup. Squadron leader Foggett, all he needs is a pipe and posh Yorkshire accent. Ee's from Romford, init! Great stuff as always.......... Squatch
  11. Hi Don. Have just happened upon your thread and have looked at your space problem (we can never have enough). If there's enough room for a second full minimum radius curve I think there should be length enough to drop the fiddle yard under the terminus. This would require much in the way of gradients, all gentle of course and a traverser. Open frame base boards will make this project turn out spectacular. It's not too hard to do just a lot of calculation. Something like this. I have flipped the through station in order to allow for longer grades. The through station now becomes a sort of junction station (pure chance). Edit: There's no reason why this station can not have an incline also. just a thought! Regards Shaun.
  12. Nowt wrong wi a bit o Hovis Kal lad but that ther's Shaftsbury int darkest Dorset!
  13. That's really good, lets hope it runs as well as it looks. I have full faith that it will of course. Regards Shaun
  14. In fear of joining the "monster raving Lunester party" (Andy Bodgits term not mine) and Mrs S. leaving me for spending way too much time on RMweb (Who's gonna do the scenics on GUN (Grim Up North) if she does) Sasquatch is going through this wonderful thread of yours Jeff. regards Shaun.
  15. Great stuff Ray! This is the best use of a layout corner I've come across. That Station building looks great and probably a collectors item worth a pretty penny now! Don't we all miss Mikes Models, their stuff was good. I'd quite like a Dukedog for Dunster but my budget for this month is going on a J11 and a Bachmann pannier and Lima J50 for a detail mix and match job. I can see that you've been blogging like a freak over the holidays and I,ve got much catching up to do! Regards Shaun.
  16. I've had a word with the tree dept. here at Sasquatch models and it's not good news! Something about finishing all these jobs and not staring at RMweb all day. Nice scenic work Jaz, that village looks terrific!
  17. Mature ones! Pinkys not included I take it?
  18. So many great layouts and modeling projects on here, I'm not getting much done looking at it all.

      I know the feeling... ;-)

  19. Excellent stuff! Those beach pics look great and always enjoy the videos. Shame that's it's so far as I'd love to come by and see Penhayle Bay in action, I'm pretty handy with a barbecue too!
  20. That scenic work is up to the same standard as your structure modeling Allan. Great stuff!
  21. We used many pins to hold things in place. This or two screws set exactly where needed in the back scene will hold up your building ladened foam farm scene.
