  1. Laminated glass has been made since the early 20th century. It was only commonly used after it became compulsory after IIRC the 1930 Road Traffic Act, the problem was that it used cellulose as a laminate that used to absorb moisture and discolour (Yellow 'bubbles' appearing around the screen edges. 'Safety' glass, which was created by heat treating glass was invented later (1930's?), this proved to be cheaper than laminated glass and also easier to create the curves that came into fashion from the late forties. However this would sometimes shatter unexpectedly (The original curved windscreens on the class 309's for example.)
  2. Laminated screens came in during the 1980's depending of course on the make/model. The last car I had with a 'safety' windscreen was a Chevette (Y reg) followed by a MkII Fiesta (F reg).
  3. There was even one registered as a ferry wagon. Its sole use was to transfer wheelsets or bogies for other ferry wagons and rolling stock that had failed overseas. It was fitted with an air brake through pipe as can be seen in some of the photographs. There is a colour photograph of it in a book or magazine but I cannot find it at the moment.
  4. No unfortunately, you should be able to find a pic in the current Hatton's ad. By the way they are 1/76 scale.
  5. I have just received a brace of the Oxford Konecranes reach stacker. On examination it might be possible to convert one to remote control. They have working Ackerman steering which would be a help.
  6. So are you going to sell them on e-bay?
  7. I visited a car show this morning at Fords Dunton research facility. Plenty of interesting cars and a chance to drive a Dutton super 7. This is a new event on behalf of the St. Francis Hospice and will run again next year (first Sunday every September).
  8. There is a pic of the same or similar ad on the side of one of their corporation trolleybuses.
  9. The coach is two compartments of a GER coach, identity unknown. The van is ex British Railways B756468.
  10. I have several 80's BR examples, but if I want to sell them I will have to dismantle the rockery.
  11. And the start price was 1p!
  12. I always thought it was a very attractive livery, pity it was not adopted.
  13. The steering wheels on many of Oxford's models seem to be badly attached. Fortunately they can be in most cases dismantled to correct the error.
  14. The CMP trucks were made by both Ford and Chevrolet, the only things in common were the cabs and bodies. The fuel tanks of the short wheelbase models were mounted on the left side partially underneath the cab. on the longer wheelbase models the fuel tank was further back with only about 6 inches below the cab. In photographs there appears to be a variation in size and on the Ford it is further below the bodywork. On some special bodies the fuel tank was mounted transversely behind the cab. Some had a fuel tank on the right hand side mostly Fords. The main way to differentiate between Chevrolet and Ford vehicles was the radiator mesh and the differential housings, the Chevrolet having a diamond mesh grill and banjo housings, the Ford had a rectangular mesh and split housings.
  15. The Vauxhall Velox/Cresta pick up was made in Australia so it probably is genuine as some have been re-imported.
  16. An elderly gentleman of my acquaintance about 30 years ago learnt to drive on a car steered by a tiller.
  17. It started at 99p, someone was eager to get it.
  18. People have got bigger in the last 100 years. This has even created problems for the London Tube lines were the rolling stock is now more cramped despite being of a 'standard' size. This has led to the seats being placed longitudinally instead of across the car. This does not apply to the sub surface stock as that is of similar size to mainline stock.
  19. A model BRUFF from the likes of Oxford would be good. There is a page for 'wants' on Facebook, you just have to post a photograph and see how many 'likes' you get.
