  1. Only just noticed that real J72s didn't have balance weights so the Bachmann model is prototypically accurate in that sense, this after many years of assuming otherwise.

Good spot! Hadn't noticed that before. :-)

  2. Ah right I didn't know that. From memory an entire coach was originally first class and when it went to Scotrail was subsequently declassified, except for the end compartments. First class with Scotrail - then and now - do offer complimentary tea/coffee/water and biscuits.
  3. When the Hull Trains 170s first migrated northwards the original plan (as I remember) was that they would be confined to Edinburgh-Inverness workings and that the still extant buffet counter would actually be used for it's intended purpose. I wonder if that ever happened?
  4. Her indoors just used one of my windproof matches to light a scented candle, there followed a loud few seconds of panic as she tried to blow the match out....

It was, of course, your fault.

  8. My descent into the mysterious world of N gauge continues. Just joined the NGS and I've only now discovered the existence of Union Mills. Temptation abounds...

  11. Listening to "Triumph of an A4 pacific" on the surround sound; never fails to cause goosebumps!

Fantastic, isn't it! 90MPH Bittern? Pchah!

  12. Smoke in my eyes, soot in my hair, cinders in my shoes. I'm watching the needle falling away and singing the eight freight blues.

Sounds like you need goggles and a hat next time you poke your head out of the carriage window.

Sounds like you need a better fireman too

  13. Off to Thurso today, first time on the North Road since (I think) 1988. No doubt one or two changes...

Alas no, on the 1400 ex INV and staying in Thurso tonight, then onto the boat in the morning. Running a bit late as the booked 158 for the Kyle train threw a tantrum so our set was robbed for it, then had to wait for another set to run around the triangle before we were able to board and go.

  14. Chilly outside but clear, with the Northern Lights brightening up the sky.

It could be worse Rob. The bloke who designs (assuming it is designed in some manner) the weathering for a lot of RTR steam locos seems to think the bottom third of the loco was liberally coated only in brake dust or some such muck, with the rest reasonably pristine. They also expect people to pay for that!
  16. RIP Martin Crowe. Now off to listen to "his" 12th man interview...

      12th man interview? enlighten me.

  17. Ah well, hopes of some real Scottish prototypes dashed again. Always next year I suppose, although I've lost count of how many years I've been saying that.

For some, however the quintessential NBR loco - J37 - is no longer available as a kit. I've spent years looking for one at shows and on ebay and still with no success.

      Aye, it's a sair loss.

Kits are the only option, CK. No real problem for the likes of me, but a serious hindrance for the less technically able.

  18. One thing about the Crabs that never ceases to amaze me is that no matter which theatre they're flying in (weekends and bank holidays excepted, naturally), they'll always find a Marriot or Hilton in which to billet. Those magnificent men in their flying machines need no maps!
  19. When you take into account how cells are replaced/regenerated, none of us are "original". Does that fact make you any less yourself?
  20. Best not get upset about these things beyond our control. Those mentioned will not have thought about any of the dangers concerned simple as that. Plus I'd wager it was either the fireman (having a breather) or the owners rep who was waving away from the cab.
  21. Should really have an early night in readiness for the long journey south to Model Rail Scotland courtesy of Scotrail, however a drop of Jura beckons.

  22. She at least appears to be in fine fettle from the various videos and newsclips and the turnout is testament to the popularity of steam and in particular this machine, trespass incidents aside. It could of course all have been very different what with her troubled history of ownership and mother nature nearly consigning her to the bottom of the Atlantic.
  23. Kevin Bloody Wilson - genius.

Oh, they are, TBS. I saw them the last time they were over in the UK; sadly I think I'll be away for this year's tour :(

  24. Careful Ron, or you'll end up in the tower. The monarch is always referred to as HM, not HRH. The latter (lesser) title is reserved for all the other bums, stiffs and associated hangers on.
