  1. Chimneys are surprisingly complex structures...

  2. I love my first sound fitted loco!

      BR(S)

I went from "I doubt I'll use DCC sound, it's just a gimmick" to never running anything that doesn't have a sound decoder!

  3. I love the detail in the Scalescenes kits. But I think folding N gauge newspapers is a step too far! Loosing my sanity

Take care though. If you loosen your sanity too much it’ll fall off!

Folding them is OK.  It's when you read them you lose your sanity.

  5. I’m nervously waiting to see what tomorrow brings me as an NHS Doctor. But modelling is an amazing relaxation and distraction. Got a project on the go to unwind

Have total admiration for all of you in the medical front line and appreciate the extreme pressures you are under.  Your skills are 100% needed now. But enjoy the modelling when you can!

Tom, thoughts and appreciation with you. Definitely we have a hobby that will help us all through hopefully..

Best wishes and best of luck at this time, Tom. When this awful virus has finally been kicked into touch, at least you'll still have your lovely layout, though.

  6. Modelling is such an antidote to the craziness and stresses of the current world. In my No gauge empire no one has heard of Covid!!

    1. Huw Griffiths

      Huw Griffiths

I suspect most people wish they'd never heard of Covid.

By the way, I agree with you about modelmaking. The way it forces people to take a step back - and chill - is one reason I've been into the hobby for most of my life.

  7. Of all the paint tins to dry it during lockdown why is it the white? Will household emulsion work?

I've used it before to do invasion stripes on an aircraft kit

  8. Who knew that Vietnamese railways had NSE liveried coaches?!

Yeah - Google "Hanoi railway station" and it could almost be Waterloo circa 1990. Well, not really...

  9. Am I the only one armchair planning a Ffestiniog layout after this week’s announcement?

    1. ian

      ian

Strangely enough I had ordered a resin kit for Upnor Castle and between placing the order and it arriving in the post the Fairlie was revealed. Complete revision of my plans ensued - new layout design in progress.

    2. Captain Kernow

      Captain Kernow

In days gone by, I might have tried to envision a reality where a Double Fairlie worked heavy coal trains over the Mendips, but those days have passed, now, so I'm more interested in those purchased by the Midland Railway for use in the Bristol area.

...but the quarry Hunslets used in the Somerset Cheddar mines were far more cute.

  10. Anyone else find waiting for Bachmann announcement a bit like being a kid before Christmas??

    Just me?????

    1. Southernman46

      Southernman46

Absolutely - haven't felt this excited about a forthcoming model for years - I have so wanted the SR Booster EL's modelled and the 4-CEP's were a part of my childhood trainspotting then teenage travel then both travel for work & being part of my early BR career.

  11. Does anyone else build a load of stock and structures for a layout they don’t have? Or even have space for?

Yes, those Really Useful boxes do stack quite happily up to 5 feet or more............:o

  12. I wonder which came first - NSE livery or Vietnamese railways? Watching Portillo in Vietnam!

  13. I’ve just realised that Britains most westerly station once belonged to the London and North EASTERN Railway. Mind blown!

    1. Tim V

      Tim V

I suppose it depends on how you define Britain. Dingle station was reputed to be the most westerly in Europe. Did that once belong to the LN&ER?

    2. Metr0Land

      Metr0Land

Surely it was Valentia Harbour, although that and Dingle are in Europe but not Britain (British Isles maybe)

..then there's skirting boards, Window sills, plug points, light switches, door opening, etc - all contrive to be in the way when manoeuvring (theoretically) optimum length base boards...

    3. Donw

      Donw

I remember someone making the centre baseboard trapezoidal so it could pull out.

Using dowel type baseboard connectors is a no no unless you allow sufficient space to pull the boards apart.

Not to be sniffed at (well someone had to say it)

    2. mike morley

      mike morley

A few years ago I was using a hot glue gun to stick something in place.  The glue began to ooze out of the joint and, without thinking, I used an unprotected fingertip to try and poke the molten glue back into place.

Not the kind of mistake you make twice.

I only bought one a few years back and soon wondered how I'd managed DIY bodging without one.

  16. Just been to an actual, real, in person model show. It was wonderful!

If a vaccine can be successful so as to make a meaningful difference, why is it that people can catch COVID more than once?

    4. TomJ

      TomJ

Far too complex to explain in a status update. But fair to say that reinfections are vanishingly rare in the context of the number of worldwide infections

  18. What is your least favourite modelling task and why is it ballasting!?

    1. Show previous comments  1 more
    2. Dagworth

      Dagworth

I don't mind ballasting, it's the stuff outside the railway fence I struggle with.

    3. irishmail

      irishmail

Like  Dagworth  I don't mind the ballasting.   I quite enjoy the track laying, wiring and ballast work, its when it comes to the general scenery that I usually struggle with.

    4. Hroth

      Hroth

With the HD, I minimise the scenic complications by resolutely refusing to model anything beyond the boundary fence. It saves a lot of angst, and is prototypical in modelling terms!

An approach even easier  to achieve in O-16.5 ...

  19. Wiring complete. Too scared to plug in controller!!

Currently it is Schrodingers wiring - both working and non-working….

    1. Harlequin

      Harlequin

Amusing concept but if you had checked the wiring as you went along you wouldn't be in this state of quantum uncertainty...

      Good luck!

      That's just so true....

    2. Bon Accord

      Bon Accord

Absolutely agree. My current layout is merely a bare board pending a house move, but there's nothing like watching them go around!
