  1. I’ve just realised that Britains most westerly station once belonged to the London and North EASTERN Railway. Mind blown!

I suppose it depends on how you define Britain. Dingle station was reputed to be the most westerly in Europe. Did that once belong to the LN&ER?

    2. Metr0Land

      Metr0Land

Surely it was Valentia Harbour, although that and Dingle are in Europe but not Britain (British Isles maybe)

Westerly in a Great Britain! Arisaig

  2. Why is there always one point motor that refuses to behave?

    1. NGT6 1315

      NGT6 1315

Because life would be utterly pointless otherwise.

The same logic applies to many things, its called the Law of Murphy.

      NGT6 1315

I was just wondering if I might have won the Nobel Prize if I had discovered this law. After all, it does seem like it is a natural constant, does it not?

  3. Am I the only one armchair planning a Ffestiniog layout after this week’s announcement?

Strangely enough I had ordered a resin kit for Upnor Castle and between placing the order and it arriving in the post the Fairlie was revealed. Complete revision of my plans ensued - new layout design in progress.

      Captain Kernow

In days gone by, I might have tried to envision a reality where a Double Fairlie worked heavy coal trains over the Mendips, but those days have passed, now, so I'm more interested in those purchased by the Midland Railway for use in the Bristol area.

...but the quarry Hunslets used in the Somerset Cheddar mines were far more cute.

  4. It’s no exaggeration to say that a cheap glue gun has changed my life

    1. Metr0Land

      Metr0Land

Not to be sniffed at (well someone had to say it)

A few years ago I was using a hot glue gun to stick something in place.  The glue began to ooze out of the joint and, without thinking, I used an unprotected fingertip to try and poke the molten glue back into place.

Not the kind of mistake you make twice.

I only bought one a few years back and soon wondered how I'd managed DIY bodging without one.

  5. A proud dad monent today as my son spent an age in my garage watching the trains go by and 'helping' to operate the controller and point levers. And he's not even two yet!!

But at least you tried Larry , some parents dont .

  6. Does anyone remember the advice on old Farish locos; 'Do not dismantle out of idle curiosity'? Now I know why!

    1. Wherry Lines

      Wherry Lines

      What have you dismantled?

    2. TomJ

      TomJ

A Farish class 31 (split frame chassis) to find out why it was jerky. A bit tricky to get the driveshafts back in and the bogies connected!

    3. Horsetan

      Horsetan

BEMO electric locos are a bit like that as well....

  7. Spent my modelling time being distracted by thoughts of the West Highland Railway. Oh and 2mm fine scale!

    1. bcnPete

      bcnPete

      oops...was that my fault ;-)

      And Dapol too!!!...

  8. Forget the finescale. I'm having much more fun with Percy and his mail bag drop

      TheCuckoo

Excellent. If we can't have fun we might as well give up now.

      A lesson for us all......?

  9. Just been to an actual, real, in person model show. It was wonderful!

  10. I love the detail in the Scalescenes kits. But I think folding N gauge newspapers is a step too far! Loosing my sanity

    1. truffy

      truffy

Take care though. If you loosen your sanity too much it’ll fall off!

    2. snitchthebudgie

      snitchthebudgie

Folding them is OK.  It's when you read them you lose your sanity.

  11. There’s something rather fun about using DCC to run double headed trains just because you can!

    1. Londontram

      Londontram

I've ran double headed trains and banked trains with Dc for years with no problems. Same result just different method

    2. davefrk

      davefrk

Yep dead easy with DC control.... Just another DCC myth.

  12. The problem with visiting preserved lines is one comes home with so many ideas for new layouts!

    1. newbryford

      newbryford

One advantage of preserved railways as a model - easy to apply Rule#1 - run what you like!

    2. Hroth

      Hroth

I was looking at Andrews Seat station on the Tanfield from the bridge and thought, "no would build a layout with such a simple trackplan, its not realistic..."

  13. Modelling real locations isn't easy. We have a Brio station, level crossing, tunnel and engine shed. Trying to fit them all on the table to recreate Grosmont is proving tricky!

    1. Metr0Land

      Metr0Land

      Ah but it's fun though

    2. TomJ

      TomJ

The alignment of the Esk Valley Line is proving tricky

  14. After a rubbish shift at work just sitting watching the trains slowly trudge round my half complete layout is the perfect therapy

    1. davefrk

      davefrk

      That's just so true....

    2. Bon Accord

      Bon Accord

Absolutely agree. My current layout is merely a bare board pending a house move, but there's nothing like watching them go around!

  15. Dont suppose anyone has a copy of the Railway Modeller Feb 1996 they could consult for me.......?

    1. RedgateModels

      RedgateModels

I'll see if I can remember to check the ERS archive next time I'm up there, maybe Friday

    2. TomJ

Both, disels and kettles! Will try to focus on completing what I've started and then let the mind wander...

  19. Having built the baseboard for my son's 'Thomas' layout I'm left with a 4x1ft piece of plywood. I keep looking at it.....

  20. Why are short circuits so b@&?!y hard to locate

    1. fursty

      fursty

Agreed, would be much easier if they were tall. Good luck.

  21. I swear that as long as I model in N gauge I will never make another building with an outside staircase

    1. NGT6 1315

      NGT6 1315

Take it to the next level. Go T scale!

  22. Before cutting out the windows of your class 37 make sure you haven't lost the replacement etch. Major fail....

    1. Trainshed Terry

      Trainshed Terry

Buy a replacement and then find the original one.

  23. Of all the paint tins to dry it during lockdown why is it the white? Will household emulsion work?

    1. toboldlygo

      toboldlygo

I've used it before to do invasion stripes on an aircraft kit

  24. Browsing Hattons website whilst on a quite night shift is a dangerous, and costly, pastime!

      Mallard60022

      Dangerous etc. ANYTIME!

  25. Santa's delivery of a rather nice Dapol Manor has turned my BR blue plans to disarray! Maybe I need another layout.....

    1. bcnPete

      bcnPete

There's always a need to have more than one layout!....
