  1. Bit of a technical question, but do you know if there is a higher proportion of "spoilt" papers in the pre-poll etc votes ?
  2. Every voting paper has a serial number on it, which is cross referenced with the stub in the book they are torn from. Your voting number from the register is written on the stub, so every vote can be checked (presumably in case of fraud) & in theory the voting intentions of every person.
  3. Happy memories of Dan Air Comet to Perpignan in late '70s - seemed massive for a wee airport
  4. Lights flashing & brighter than cars' DDRs (dangerous driving lights !) - not much hope for some of the species
  5. It's been mentioned before that doing the test in reverse would be a good idea to simulate a rear end collision, especially with tiny cars with little or no boot - afterall, where do you put your treasured models ? or kids (back seat a foot or too from the back) ?
  6. David, there was a Ballachulish Ferry Station before the terminus, you walked down a path to the Ballachuilish ferry, the terminus was for the slate quarries.
  7. I keep a large bowl of water beside me then soldering white metal in case of need the dog gets thirsty watching me work !
  8. Also wind power does not work when it is TOO windy, which is a fair percentage of the time
  9. does the same apply to crash helmets ? edit 17/4 1.30pm Sorry, hope no one thought I was suggesting that you shouldn't wear a crash helmet on a motor bike. I teach children to sail & if their parents want them to wear a helmet, I always make sure that it is a type which does not cover the ears - so they can hear other boats, the wind & instructions. They also have drainage slots so they don't get a helmetful of water.
  10. re high vis, I arrived towing the trailer to be met with hazard warning lights must be used in the hall. My tow car does not have them due to age ! Suddenly the lack of them was not a problem. pa the trailer was too heavy to push up the ramp.
  11. Don't know a thing about butterflies, but one was flying around my garden in Ayrshire not long after the frost had melted this morning. The wings were brown with orange patches, or it may have been the other way round. Perhaps someone might know.
  12. & this site ! http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/forum/243-intermodalcontainers/
  13. Disagree, cars are unnecessarily large today
  14. My mother came home from Malta in 1961 on one of the landing ships built for the expected invasion of Japan in 1946. As the 1946 voyage was expected to to be a one way trip, it was not exactly built to last. On arrival in the UK (Portsmouth ?), it was dry-docked & condemned as no reading could be obtained on the bottom plate thickness. I am not sure if it was Reggio or Striker. She has never really liked sea voyages since - no wonder. http://www.navyphotos.co.uk/Combined%20ops%20assault%20and%20landing%20ships/webpages/landing_ship_3511.htm http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205120466
  15. he didn't try the outside wheels between the yellow lines & the curb, therefore not on yellow lines ploy
  16. As did the UK & USA with tanks, the Sherman was cheap, easy to manufacture in large numbers, but not as "deadly" as the far fewer in number Panzer V & V1.
  17. but could one Typhoon (very good as it is) dispose of them all & survive ?
  18. Jig, it is 75mpg average, per both per computer and miles per tank (so unless milometer & tank are way out!), usually 50 to 60 mph, usually fairly gentle as there is no point passing the farmers, as there will be another one in front. On the moterway, easily 75mpg. It has now done 17k miles so starting to be run in. I know they are the same group, but I suspect that Skoda tweeks things to how they want them to be. Would never buy another VW, as ones we had were just trouble & rusted, weird when they are supposed to be so similar.
  19. I'll stick to my diesel Skoda Octavia, 75mpg commuting over A class & moor roads - I can live with that sort of poor consumption - just !!
  20. I regularly have to drive my mother's fabia, lovely wee car. It's the archetypal 1 lady owner, only used for the 1/2 mile run to the shops, I regularly take it over the quiet moor roads & clean it's wee tubes & it responds beautifully, perky engine, good road holding, hand it back & the poor old dear doesn't notice the difference - if only she knew I do like skodas though If the 1st gen A class was based on the original polo, it did need serious fixing - mine was standard & it's handling was definitely interesting
  21. jjb, is that the one that kept falling over when the steering wheel was turned ?
  22. That's quite something, the USA admitting that WW2 started before Dec 1941
  23. or even better, a wee platform in front of the car for the flagman to walk on
  24. Yes F-UnitMad, in England & Wales ONLY, does not apply to Scotland, apart from part of the A9. In E&W, I think 50 only applies where there is not a speed limit sign - only the "national speed limit". Hope you have not been driving north of the border ! Didn't know about the digi tacho printout, the one I drive occasionally is an old card one. A retrograde step if your speed can't be proven by a quick speed / time printout.
  25. A few groups of drivers who seem to be routinely above speed limits : LGVs - speed limit on single carriageway roads is 40, get they routinely travel at 50 or even 60 mph. Certainly round us where there are no duel carriageways, all the police would need to do is look at their tachos to see how long they have been doing 50 or 60 & issue tickets, but no. I wonder what the difference in braking distances are for LGVs at 40, 50 & 60 mph.Overtaking a LGV at 50 is much more difficult & dangerous than on doing 40. Motor bikes - generally the high powered "road legal" racing bikes. I have been passed frequently by bikes doing well in excess of 60, might be 80 or 90 given how quickly they disappeared into the distance. Can't say have seen a Harley or other large cruising bike exceeding the limit. Private hire care - either seem to do 10/20 mph under or over the limit, depending on whether on hire or not. Cyclists - another couple in dark clothes which do not show up well even with headlights, do they have a death wish ? {edit} Just some thoughts On the 20 mph limits at schools, the flashing lights are frequently on during the night, at weekends & in the holidays at our local school, when it is obvious the gates are locked & no lights are on - naturally everyone keeps to a needless 20 mph.
