  1. Better than the notice on boat outboard motors which say this side up, rather than other side up. If you lay them down wrong side up, they get oil in all the wrong places.
  2. Another 2 cyclists this morning competing for the Darwin Award. Misty, with pale white sky & no colour in the countryside, what are they wearing - white tops & black trousers, no lights of course. It was pure luck I saw a shadowy movement, & as I was not travelling quickly, was able to slow.
  3. Thinking of the prototype, are there any still around that we know has NOT been subject to front end work or repair ? Might be the difference between different people's measurements.
  4. Tony What was the aircraft photo which crashes, the photo above the Vulcan ? Is it a Spearfish ? Thanks Duncan
  5. There's also a couple of good pictures on p23 of R Tourret's wee book British Railway Private Owner Tank Wagons, no 14 in Cheona Publications Railways in Profile Series. One is between 1908 & repainting when taken over by BP in 1919 and the other 1968. A happy reader of the book. Duncan
  6. Nice pictures TheQ, though don't think I would choose a 505 (page 2 top, yellow tanks) for the race, definitely able to exceed the speed limit !
  7. I've suggested before that there should be a differential in speed before vehicles should try to overtake, say 10mph, rather than the 0.5 to 2 difference between differing speed limiters. There must be something wrong with any driver who can't estimate that sort of speed difference approaching a vehicle.

    Top Gear?

Can anyone remember the first series of TG with the 3 amigos - was it actually any good ?
  9. If you are wanting simple 4 or 6 wheel coaches, then most people would be able to build a Connoisseur Models coach, yes it is etched brass, but it is actually very simple & easy to build. As Jim points out, they are generic & look very convincing when painted, I have fooled members of a line society using one suitably painted. If I can build one, then the proverbial 2 left thumbs probably could. For those that doubt their ability, have a look at the instructions online. No connection other than a very satisfied customer. http://www.jimmcgeown.com/index.html
  10. Outsourcing often works like this (simplified), new boss comes in & says he will cut costs (his bonus depends on it), so cuts outsourcing. It works for a couple of years; boss is looking for his next job at higher pay level; problems start to occur & business does not have the staff / skills to do the work / rectify the faults / costs too much to recruit & train staff so use expensive temporary workers new boss arrives (his bonus depends on short-term profits), aims to cut costs; increases outsourcing; costs fall as fewer expensive temporary workers; problems fall as expert outsourcer know better cycle repeats itself (the accountant says "another cycle, seen it all before & gets on with his job)
  11. I’m sorry but I don’t agree with most of the preceding posts. If I was approaching an unfamiliar crossing I would be wary. I would not use buttons on a pole with no instructions. Then there is a stop sign. The instruction sign is at the stop sign for a reason, you stop and read. The red light is the last sign before actually crossing. The number of signs would be more likely to make me stop to read them, especially a red light. OK, it is fairly small, but then so are all the signs, except the stop sign. A contractor probably does not consider the trailer to be large or slow, but the trailer stand seems to be pretty close to the ground in picture 5, especially as the back of the tractor is in the air due to the front being low. Yes, the hydraulic lifters could be fully down in the picture, as a consequence of the incident. These are just my thoughts.
  12. Following on from Kenton's question, do the "authorised users" of occupation crossings receive written information from NR on how to use "their" crossing ? From Andy's post, an employer should ensure that his employees are able to operate "whatever" etc, be it language, appropriate licences, vehicles, or anything else ( I am not suggesting this was the case in this crash ).
  13. agreed Mike, but she would not overtake on the couple of safe stretches available, preferring to tailgate
  14. or youngish females here yesterday 2 separate ones overtook on the same double white lines, the 2nd passed 2 vehicles, 60mph limit, restricted visibility due to dips in the road 3rd decided to tailgate me ( est between 6 & 10 ft ) over a twisty country road ( I was in a sports car with much better brakes than her wee harchback ) - unfortunately there was nowhere safe to pull in to let her pass, so was watching my mirror at every bend to make sure she was slowing - at the junction got out & mentioned the danger she was causing - she just shrugged & continued to tailgate when on the main road what is it with them ? are they entered for the Darwin award ?
  15. probably the one at a right angle to this one sorry,
  16. child cruelty or attempted murder of her child ??
  17. DDL = dangerous driving lights designed to distract, dazzle & blind I run a classic car & now wonder if I should be driving with full beam on, just to be "seen" among these DDLs
  18. wonder if he was also breaking the speed limit for trailers
  19. This has probably been brought up - why do so many drivers not use their lights, even when pitch dark - the majority of the culprits round here seem to be female - discuss
  20. No mention of a fine or having to pay for the damage & I would have thought even a rag top would have mentioned this - that is what I would have expected
  21. Peanuts, I think it is just on the A9 that the HGV limit was increased to 50mph, it has certainly slowed them down A sensible rule should be if you can't do 10mph more than the vehicle you are overtaking, you shouldn't start. It would stop the HGVs jousting side by side. The duel carriageway sections of the A9 are the perfect example where a HGV tries to pull out to pass another doing 1mph less at the start of these sections & blocks miles of road. It is hardly surprising that the cars "block" the HGVs from pulling out when they can.
  22. & put traffic islands at bus stops to prevent traffic passing a stationary bus. I suppose it is to protect the passengers who blindly run across the road, being in too much of a hurry to wait or bother till there is a break in the traffic
