  1. I was wondering if A2 60532 Blue Peter ever worked on steam specials or even a light engine movement over the S&C during the late 70's, early 80's?
  2. I regularly used to travel in and out of Paddington station in the late 70's and 80's and I don't ever recall seeing any Class 08's at the station; except for one occasion and I think that was 08944 on a engineering train. Were they ever used as station pilots or was mainline loco's used most of the time?
  3. The question was; what wagons are relevant for that era as I'd like to get a sort of prototypical freight train. There are several wagons with billboard logo's but would they have been around then?
  4. I know a large number of withdrawn Class 22, 35, 42 and 43 hydraulic's were stored at Bristol St Philips Marsh before heading to Swindon for scrapping but was that just a collection point for loco's in the Bristol area or further afield? I know that when several withdrawn Class 52's were brought up from Laira, I saw several of them passing through Bristol Temple Meads station and I assume they headed straight onto Swindon without stopping.
  5. Hi there, seriously thinking of modelling a HO scale German layout but using Marklin as I've always liked their products but I need to ask some silly questions regarding freight wagons. I plan to date it in the late steam era as I remember seeing some of that and I'm pretty confident about the coaching stock but the freight wagons are a complete mystery to me. The layout would be pretty simple and probably only be on a 8x4 baseboard but enough to scratch that itch. Any help would be wonderful.
  6. The nameplates on all the Class 40's were removed by the early to mid 70's and I was told at the request of the shipping companies; as the ships they were named after were mainly heading for scrap. I have no idea if there's any truth in that though.
  7. Thanks for that, I meant Yahoo not Google. I think I will go for one of those as I don't think they would have changed much by the time the time Falcon arrived at Bath Road.
  8. I tried looking on the Google site but I couldn't find any references.
  9. Stupid question, would anyone know the coach numbers of these sets as I'd love to recreate a accurate set.
  10. Love to see pictures of the different battery box styles, air tanks etc as I'm struggling to get my head around the different styles and variations there are.
  11. If hauled early Mk II stock, does anyone know what the set consist was and I assume it would include a buffet/restaurant vehicle and a BG?
  12. Hi Phil, I was sure it went straight to air brakes and one of the first to become so but had a nagging doubt. I believe there was some talk of having it ETH converted at the same time as it was air braked but space, time but namely money, kicked that idea into touch.
  13. There are pictures of 1200 in blue at Bristol on Flickr dated 1970/71 at both Bristol and Paddington on passenger workings and I do remember the first time seeing the loco, and that was on Bath Road around the same time. It was not ETH fitted but certainly dual braked and painted BR Blue when it was overhauled at Swindon after it's purchase from Brush in 1970, so it could be used with early non air conditioned Mk II stock.
  14. Also with 1A09 but I'd didn't know if it was used solely on that train or any Bristol/Paddington working. Any idea of it's return working reporting mark was? Also, did it ever do a Paddington/Weston-super-Mare working?
  15. I recently bought a Heljan 1200 Falcon in BR blue and I wondered what the coaching stock would have been used when it did the Bristol/Paddington diagrams? Was it early Mk 2's or mainly Mk 1's and what was the train reporting marks?
  16. Apart from 46229 Duchess of Hamilton running steam specials over the S&C in the 70's and 80's on a regular basis, the only times I believe Coronation Scots appeared over the S&C was 46238 City of Carlisle in 1963 on a RCTS Railtour, 46247 City of Liverpool in 1961 on another railtour and 46255 City of Hereford in 1964, again on another railtour and must have been the last time one ran in BR service over the S&C.
  17. Thinking of building a double track main line Western Region based layout set in the Bristol area, in the early 70's time frame but I was wondering when a lot of the track rationalisation happened, loops removed, lines singled and multiple aspect signal signalling started appearing? As I want working signals, I'm going down the MAS signalling rather than semaphore signals which I think I will struggle to get working. Any help would be most grateful.
  18. I believe there was a regular steam working in the 1950's and 60's from the Western Region via Acton Mainline, over the North London Line to Temple Mills, and return. I believe the same route was used for Southern Region from Feltham.
  19. The Hydro-Kinetic brake was excellent when it worked properly but it was flawed, it suffered badly from corrosion and pressure issues. The cardan shaft idea was never a great one as it suffered from vibration at high speed but it solved the problem of unslung weight on the axles and bogies.
  20. I think it's now DfT policy to go for OHLE rather than 3rd rail and I seem to remember reading that existing 3rd rail on the Southern Region will be replaced by OHLE when it's due for replacement. Regardless of whether you go for 3rd rail or overhead on the Windermere branch, you still need sub stations and other ancillary equipment, so if you went for bi-mode, you need none of that.
  21. As per my previous post on this thread, the double headed Class 50's were probably a BTM - PAD out and back working in an attempt to try and keep to HST timings which was caused by a shortage of HST sets.
  22. 08818 was a long term Bristol Bath Road engine and every time I went through Temple Meads in the late 70's and through to the late 80's, I always seemed to see it working the NCL parcel depot and west end of the station and at one time, it just had 818 on the cabside.
  23. When both 6 and 8 car sets were on the Western Region, were the coaches and power cars mixed and matched? There is a MU equipped power car on the end of a 8 car set posted on here but did the sets remain stable and swop power cars like present day HST's or could coaches from a 6 car set end up in a 8 car set and vice versa?
  24. The Class 91 record breaker was 91010 at 161.7 mph down Stoke Bank in September 1989 but with the cancellation of the APT, there was consideration of ordering extra Class 91's and Mk IV's and I believe that several test runs between London Euston and Manchester were undertaken but it came to nothing.
